The Surabaya attacks saw a confluence of several trends @CTCWP Sentinel has been tracking...

1. A growth in recent years in the ISIS and jihadi terrorist threat in South East Asia:

https://ctc.usma.edu/the-islamic-state-looks-east-the-growing-threat-in-southeast-asia/

While much attention has been focused on the Islamic State threat to Europe, the increasingly fertile ground for jihadi expansion in Southeast Asia means the Islamic State may pose as big a future threat to the East as the West. Islamic State operatives inside Syria and Iraq have leveraged existing local networks in Southeast Asian countries to remotely enable terrorist plots in their home countries, and there is concern that foreign fighters, and not simply Southeast Asian returnees, will export terrorism to the region as the Islamic State suffers setbacks in Syria and Iraq. These threat trends may accelerate if the Islamic State declares a wilaya in parts of Southeast Asia where extremist groups already enjoy safe havens, creating a potential magnet for foreign fighters.

2. Significant concern about the ISIS related threat to Indonesia:

https://ctc.usma.edu/the-jakarta-attack-and-the-islamic-state-threat-to-indonesia/

The January 14 attack in Jakarta shows the growing military capacity of Islamic State supporters in Indonesia. It also reveals the important role played by key Indonesians in Syria as a link to militant jihadis back home providing direction, possible finance and, above all, tapping into local grievances over the actions of the Indonesian state and police. Indonesia will continue to face a threat from the Islamic State in 2016 and beyond and may suffer from further attacks, but it is highly unlikely that the group will succeed in establishing a wilayat on Indonesian territory in any meaningful way.

3. ISIS's move towards promoting female jihad:

https://ctc.usma.edu/the-mujahidat-dilemma-female-combatants-and-the-islamic-state/

There has been an apparent shift in the Islamic State’s position on whether or not women can participate in combat. While female suicide bombers were used extensively by the Islamic State’s predecessor group, al Qa`ida in Iraq, the Islamic State strictly mandated that women should be wives and mothers rather than fighters. With the group under pressure and facing recruitment challenges, two recent announcements suggest it has lifted its moratorium on women combatants, a shift that could have significant implications for regional and international security

4. ISIS's mobilization of children in attacks:

https://ctc.usma.edu/depictions-of-...slamic-states-martyrdom-propaganda-2015-2016/

The Islamic State is mobilizing children and youth at an increasing and unprecedented rate. The authors present preliminary findings from a new database in which they recorded and analyzed child and youth “martyrs” eulogized by the Islamic State between January 2015 and January 2016. The data suggests that the number of child and youth militants far exceeds current estimates. The article presents data on the children and youth’s country of origin, age, role, location of death, and under what circumstances they were killed. The authors also describe several trends in the propaganda before discussing the varied and complex implications of the Islamic State’s long-term vision for its children and youth.

5. The group's weaponization of the very young:

https://ctc.usma.edu/the-islamic-st...s-of-youth-radicalization-and-indoctrination/

Previous sociocultural research linked conditions in the Iraq conflict zone with factors known to be associated with youth violence and radicalization, supporting predictions of a future cohort of fighters that would be extremely aggressive, violent, and remorseless. The exacerbation of these conditions and intentional efforts by the Islamic State to indoctrinate and radicalize youth has resulted in the weaponization of children, creating a “perfect storm” of consequence and influence. Unless addressed effectively, this will represent a persistent, transgenerational capability in support of the Islamic State’s “long game.”

6. Jihadi terrorists' increasing exploitation of family bonds:

https://ctc.usma.edu/the-ties-that-bind-how-terrorists-exploit-family-bonds/

Tightening security environments are encouraging jihadis to turn increasingly to the family unit for recruits. This phenomenon complicates efforts to detect, monitor, and prevent violent radicalization. Kinship recruitment, which is difficult for security agencies to observe, is facilitated by several psychological mechanisms that bind individuals together on the path to extremism. Importantly, it deters ambivalent recruits from defecting to the authorities for fear of damaging their own valued relationships. The reliance on kinship recruitment is supplemented by greater use of social media and an emphasis on recruiting Islamic converts and women, which suggests that jihadis are adjusting their mobilization patterns to avoid detection based on previous, well-known strategies for radicalization.

SURABAYA: It was still dark when 16-year-old Firman Halim performed his dawn prayers at a mosque near his home in the leafy, middle-class suburb of Rungkut, Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city.

The bright, happy child was a favourite of the housing complex security guard, 46-year-old Hery, who regarded Firman as his “little brother.”

But last Sunday (May 13), something was amiss.

The familiar smile was missing. Instead, the teenager was crying. His father, Dita Oepriarto, 46, stroked his head and patted his shoulders but he kept on crying.

Hery had come to the mosque to pray before he started his morning shift and he sat close to them.

In the stillness of dawn, Hery, overheard his father whispering “be patient, be sincere” but the teenager could not be consoled. He continued crying.

(...)

Within 10 minutes, the entire family of six were dead. The suicide bombings at three churches killed 13 people and wounded another 41.

Back at his home, Hery heard the news. He was stunned. He immediately thought he understood why Firman was crying – he did not want to die.

“I feel, I believe, he didn’t want to do it (die as a suicide bomber). This is not right, to drag children into this,” said Hery, falling silent as he put his head down.

“I feel a terrible loss,” Hery added softly.

The day ended, but not the terror.

Later that night at 9.20pm local time, a bomb assembled by Anton Febrianto exploded prematurely in his home in Sidoarjo, just outside of Surabaya.

It killed his wife Puspitasari and their two children, Hilta Aulia Rahman, 17, and Ainur Rahman 15. Two other children, Faisa Putri and Garida Huda Akbar, respectively aged 11 and 10, survived.

On May 14, a family of five, riding on two separate motorcycles, attacked a police station in Surabaya, killing four members of the family. An eight-year-old child survived.

All three families knew each other, according to Indonesian police chief Tito Karnavian.

(...)

When asked where did Dita get the idea to turn his children into suicide bombers, the official said: “We don’t know yet but they (Dita and his friends) very often watched suicide bombings carried out by children."

The official added: “As the leader of JAD Surabaya, Dita could have influenced the other two families."

While Indonesian police chief Tito has officially said that Dita and his family did not go to Syria, the actual situation is far more complicated.

“We can’t really tell whether he (Dita) went to Syria or not as we have experienced instances where someone went to Syria and slipped back home undetected,” a security source told Channel NewsAsia.

Official figures show there are 1,200 returnees from Syria and many of them are not detained owing to the weakness in Indonesia’s anti-terrorism law 15/2003 which does not cover terror acts committed outside of Indonesia.

"Officially, the figure shows 1,200 returnees from Syria. But unofficially, it numbers at least 2,000 or more,” the source said.

Chilling. On so many levels. Much more at link.

Police believe they may have foiled a terror attack after making a ‘very serious’ discovery.

The Manchester Evening News has learnt from a senior police source that officers believe they may have thwarted a plot.

Police believe they may have foiled terror attack after 'very serious' discovery

I’m concerned about Ramadan attacks anywhere in the world.

Please be especially vigilant if you are travelling in Paris and anywhere in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, the U.K especially London, Bali, or Turkey. These appear to be hotspots for terror.

“A plot to carry out a biological attack using ricin has been foiled in Germany, officials say.

A 29-year-old Tunisian, identified only as Sief Allah H, was arrested on Wednesday before a search took place in his apartment in Cologne.

Investigators say he started procuring material online including seeds needed for the creation of ricin in mid-May. They said he succeeded in creating the toxin this month and investigators found it in the search of his flat.

They are still investigating how the suspect planned to use the toxin, but said he was working on an attack in Germany.”

I’m so glad this was foiled. People should not forget there are plots to kill being prepared every day thank goodness for the security services because without I dread to think how many attacks and fatalities there would be.

Belgium charges couple with plotting attack on French rally
July 2, 2018 3:32PM EDT

BRUSSELS - A married couple with Iranian heritage was arrested “just in time” in Belgium as they allegedly prepared to head to France to bomb a large rally that an Iranian opposition group held over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

The federal prosecutor's office said the Belgian citizens were charged with “attempt at terrorist murder and preparing a terrorist crime” against the group, the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq. U.S. President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, was among the speakers at the Saturday rally in the French town of Villepinte near Paris.

Investigators who stopped the couple Saturday and searched their car found about half a kilogram (more than a pound) of TATP explosives and a detonator, federal magistrate Eric Van der Sijpt said.

That could cause a sizeable explosion, considerable bloodshed and widespread panic in a crowd that was estimated to have reached 25,000 people.

Cleveland dodged a bullet

CLEVELAND – Federal authorities arrested a man Monday who allegedly planned a terrorist-style attack in downtown Cleveland on the Fourth of July.

The FBI said Demetrius Nathaniel Pitts – also known as Abdur Raheem Rafeeq – was taken into custody Sunday morning on accusations of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

"He talked about wanting to target people watching fireworks over downtown Cleveland," said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman.

“Counter-terror chiefs have issued a fresh appeal for holidaymakers to be on alert for attacks overseas as millions prepare for summer breaks.

Police and ministers called on people to familiarise themselves with the steps to follow in the event of a security alert while they are away by watching a four-minute safety video”

Glasgow holidaymakers told to be on alert for terror attacks abroad

Hoping and praying for a peaceful summer. I’m worried about an attack happening in Bastille Day again. Hopefully roadblocks will be up and all security measures taken.

International terror group Al-Shabaab has reportedly introduced an eco-friendly ban on plastic bags - just hours after killing four people in a brutal mortar attack.

The notorious terrorists, who have links to Al Qaeda, said the single-use plastics 'pose a serious threat to the wellbeing of humans and animals' as they announced the sweeping measures on Sunday afternoon, HuffPost reports.

News of the ban is said to have broken on Al-Shabaab's radio station, Radio Andalus, after seven civilians were injured and four others killed in mortar attacks in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the killings on Sunday, also putting forward plans to introduce an immediate ban on the logging of native trees.

Mit Flammenwerfern bewaffnet: Hunderte Migranten stürmen Grenzzaun von Ceuta

Hundreds of refugees forcibly entered the Spanish North African exclave of Ceuta on Thursday. Between 450 and 600 migrants had crossed the six-metre-high double border fences early in the morning.

This was reported in the Spanish media with reference to police reports. The migrants had attacked the officers with homemade flamethrowers and burnt lime, which caused dangerous burns on contact with the skin.

This was the biggest rush in recent years on the enclave on the Strait of Gibraltar. A police spokesman for the news agency Europa Press quoted the migrants as "brutal as never before". Four civil guards and eleven migrants were taken to a hospital in Ceuta, it was said.

According to the information, hundreds of other migrants tried to climb over the border fences as well. But they were prevented from doing so by Spanish and Moroccan officials.

Spain has two exclaves in North Africa, both of which are claimed by Morocco: Ceuta on the Strait of Gibraltar and Melilla, 250 kilometres to the east. Tens of thousands of Africans, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, await an opportunity to enter the EU near the two areas.

Lengthy video made by residents of Ceuta of yesterday's invasion.
Meet your new neighbours. Instead of being deported as criminals who broke fences and used flamethrowers and burnt lime, they are allowed to apply for asylum.

Do these healthy young man look like they have fled from somewhere - and where would that be? IMHO they look more like an army minus the uniforms.

The new socialist government of Spain welcomes these men.

Mass immigration from Africa into Europe is going to be brutal. This should worry everyone.
