"Police initially released a still image from surveillance cameras showing what they said were the two victims walking hand-in-hand. But they later said the image was not of the British couple.

They also said an Asian-looking man seen on closed-circuit camera footage was a prime suspect, but investigators were pursuing several leads.

"We are focusing on migrant workers because of the surrounding witnesses and evidence, including the video footage," Kiattipong said. "We are sweeping hotels, bars, businesses and residences of migrant workers on the beach to find the suspect."

Another police official, Col. Prachum Ruangthong, said investigators were also looking for a group of bar employees and had questioned a group of foreigners as well.

"This morning we surrounded three locations, including the residences of migrant workers, to search and collect DNA," Prachum said."

Police have changed their mind again - they are back to British suspects.

'But now they say new evidence has shifted the focus of the investigation.

BBC south-east Asia correspondent Jonathan Head said the evidence had led police to think a British man they questioned and released on Monday is still a possible suspect.'

Thailand Tourist Murders: British Friend Called Back to Koh Tao for More Questions
By Chutima Sidasathian
Wednesday, September 17, 2014
PHUKET: A British traveller named as Christopher Alan Ware is being questioned again by police investigating the savage murder of two British tourists, Phuketwan learned today from police sources.

DNA samples are expected to reveal today whether Ware is a prime suspect or whether several Burmese remain under suspicion for the slayings of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24.

Ware left the holiday island of Koh Tao yesterday but returned this morning in response to a request from police. Later, he was taken to the beach where the murder took place.

Today brought more unusual twists in the pursuit of the killer or killers.

Region 8 Police Commander Panya Mamen told Phuketwan: ''David Miller's luggage contains a pair of bloodstained pants, which adds to the mystery.

''There was also blonde hair on a mobile telephone police have now located.''

It's understood that Miller and Ware shared a room at the Ocean View Bungalows, where Hannah Witheridge was also staying.

Doctors have been asked to determine whether cuts on Ware's hands are old wounds or fresh cuts. A hoe was used to kill the British travellers.

Another report today, so far unconfirmed, says that blonde hair has been found in one of Hannah Witheridge's hands.

Both bodies are expected to be autopsied in Bangkok today as more than 300 police conduct further inquiries on the Thai holiday island where the two bodies were found on a beach early on Monday.

Police conducted tests and found that sound does not travel far from the cove where the bodies were found because of rocks that surround the small sandy beach.

Phuket detective and forensics specialist Colonel Santi Chainiramai is among a number of police called in from surrounding jurisdictions to solve the murders as fast as possible.

Are they talking about the man who posted on David's Facebook saying he was going to meet with David but fell asleep? Tbh I did think that was a bit sus

Never mind. Wrong person

Correction; that's an obvious wound on his hand, but it was earlier reported he got it in a fire. I can actually see that being a burn from a hot stick, rather than a cut.

As big as I can get it.

Reporting here that the (unnamed Brit) has actually been arrested on suspicion of muder.

'Surat Thani police yesterday arrested a British tourist after he was suspected to have connection with the deaths of two fellow Britons in Koh Tao off Surat Thani coast.
Police said they arrested him after employees of a resort on the beach told police that the suspect was seen strolling near the scene where the two British tourists were killed on the night of September 14.

Besides they also found a significant evidence which is a blood stain on his clothes.'

Another noteworthy snip from this article linked by zwiebel:

Forensic police chief Pol Maj Gen Pornchai Suthirakun said Wednesday morning that doctors would conduct autopsy on the two Britons’ bodies today to compare with DNA samples collected from suspects.

The result would be known in the afternoon.

ETA: stellar work as always zwie, keeping the thread up to date. My fellow WSers upthread have done an excellent job on this case. :thumb:

The Thai Prime Minister has just made an unbelievably crass remark about the case. Perhaps he should issue a warning to all tourists. If you are beautiful and want to wear a bikini, please don't come to Thailand. And he has also got it wrong anyway - Hannah was wearing a skirt and a bandeau top, not a bikini.

"There are always problems with tourist safety. They think our country is beautiful and is safe so they can do whatever they want, they can wear bikinis and walk everywhere," Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha, who is also the army chief, told government officials.

But "can they be safe in bikinis... unless they are not beautiful?" he said, addressing the issue of tourist safety in a speech broadcast live on television.
Prayut, who seized power from elected government in a May 22 coup, is well known for making off-the-cuff remarks.'

Thos whole case is starting to jar with me now. It would be in the Thai's best interests I.e. tourism for this to be bought to a swift yet honest conclusion however they are doing nothing but making themselves look incompetent and seemingly clutching at straws/creating scapegoats. Already we have seen the following:

1. The friend was was a suspect, then wasn't and now is again

2. The miscommunication with press I.e the friend has been charged, no actually just questioned

3. The complete lack of respect and decency of staff in posting pictures from the crime scene on the internet for all to see

4. The total unwillingness of officials in considering that a local could be responsible despite the fact that the murder weapon is one more likely to be favoured by a local - the blaming of the foreign workers and now tourists with little evidemce to back that up

5. The cctv footage of the "pair" which even to us mere mortals did not look anything like the poor victims

And lastly (but I could go on) the prime minister has made remarls about the conduct of the victims, almost as though their behaviour warranted to be killed in such am obscene manner.

I'm afraid I don't hold much hope of the real perpetrator being found, I have a feeling an innocent party will be charged instead

Cant link at the moment but daily mail are stating the following:

1. Post mortem carried out - david had been beaten around head. Water I lungs indicated he had also been drowned. He had defensive marks sgowing he had fought back

2. Hannah also been beaten amd had engaged in sexual activity at some point prior to the attach but rape cannot be determined

3. Christopher wade has been asked, alongside his brother who was travelling with them to return and stay on island for 48 hours to help police. He was talen down to the crume scene earlier today

There is talk of blonde hairs being found in one of the victims fists, hair on a mobile phone which has been found and bloodied underwear in the victims (davids) luggage but the story is quite fragmented by this point and so the who, what, why, whens etx aren't very clear

Who was the British backpacker who left early on the morning of the murders? Has he been eliminated or was he David's friend or the friend's brother? Just thinking one of them could have murdered the couple and left the island, and the other perhaps knows (or witnessed, or tried to prevent) the murder and is covering up for them. Seems a bit suspicious if your friend has just been murdered to leave the island, check into a hotel and then try to get a flight back to UK - unless this was their scheduled return flight of course.

I agree with other posters that the couple were probably having sex on the beach when they were attacked. The fact that it was so violent and the perpetrator did little to conceal the weapon or cover their tracks might suggest it was a crime of passion rather than a robbery gone wrong JIMO

THAI police are preparing to arrest a British man over the brutal murder of his close friend and another female backpacker on an island beach popular with Australian tourists.

Christopher Alan Ware was stopped at Bangkok’s main airport with his brother James on Wednesday for more questioning on the slayings of David Miller and Hannah Witheridge at Koh Tao — a day after being told by police he could leave the island.

Initial forensic tests were carried out on the victims late today, pointing to a more complicated struggle before they were hacked to death with a garden hoe, typically used by beachside bars to dig holes for fires on the main beach.

In a further complication, the local police chief suggested there may be a bisexual element to the relationships and crime.

There is evidence both victims had sex either before or after they died, although it is not known with whom and if it was consensual``.
