Pleased/surprised we got where we did to be honest! My 10 year old, however, has gone to bed devastated. Still, he could have been trapped in a cave for a fortnight so he'll get over it!

Just watching the news here and they showed a video of the coach sitting up in his hospital bed. Far more important than a game.

A thought here. I’m thinking we might be misinterpreting “tourist attraction”, thinki if it like Disney World. I’m think they might be meaning “historical marker”, to commemorate a place where a diver lost his life and the world came together to save these kids. It would be an educational place in the future. Similar to a showing a war bunker, old concentration camp, museum you get my drift.

Thanks for that depiction. I've not been surprised that most everything (actually, I think completely everything) coming from divers' is that all opinions concur.
I pretty much figured it was a given, that they would be sedated, even when they were still talking about the kids being active in diving out.
I'm very glad the boys didn't have to, and rescuers were able to "package" them afterall, completely sedated. That's what I was (and a bunch of us were) hoping they could do.
I felt that if my kid were in there, I'm pretty sure I'd want for him to be sedated. And now that I have seen the footage, I am certain of it.
It would have been risky either way for the kids, and this was surely the lesser. And successful. Bless Dr. Harris.
And btw, I don't think I'd want to learn diving, if I couldn't chose my partner! That's scary. Thanks for the heads up.

They won’t have a scary memory of swimming out of there through something compared to a toilet bowl either. A little less traumatic for them than it could’ve been imo.

The problem is that people are now going to WANT to go into the cave (more so if they make a film) so they might as well make it safe and controlled and official to avoid something like this ever happening again. Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle as well as the crossing over to Laos are a well worn backpacker route, I can see Tham Luang becoming an extension of that. All those daft farang gap year kids scoring opium and getting brave, doesn't bear thinking about!

You're right though, it'll never be Disney. Probably a ticket hut, a shrine to the lost SEAL and some pictures of the boys. Nothing flash. They'll also need to consider somehow closing the entrance off during monsoon season.

It must of been scary for the boys if they were sedated. Knowing and seeing their teammates go to “sleep” and leave and knowing you would be doing the same. Or the first boy his anxiety. Being the first.
Now imagine when they awoke. Be in at ambulance or hospital. The relief. Gahhhh

Our world is fantastic as evidenced by how we rallied around these boys and their coach.

    There... fixed. :)

    WOW
Watching some of the inside cave videos.

You can tell how much work was involved by looking at all the hoses that were laying along the walls of the cave.

Tons of lines of hoses all along the way. Some lines were anchored to the cave wall with anchor devices like a mountain climber would use.

We can finally see why it took so long before they even started getting the boys out. They got all that stuff in place.

You can also see how dangerous it is to walk on the slippery rocks and the sharp edges. One bad fall and you can get cut really bad or break a bone. If you injure yourself deep in a cave and dont have someone that can go for help then you are in serious trouble.

Its something to remember for anyone who does hiking in remote places. Always try to go with a 2nd person or at a minimum be sure you have cell phone coverage because if you break a leg or cut yourself or bit by a deadly snake you may need help to get back. You may not be able to get back on your own.

It took me a few trips before I learned about that. I still will go alone but I have a plan if something goes wrong. I leave word to a loved one exactly where I am going or at least the general area I am heading and if I am not back by a certain time like midnight that evening then they are to go for help. I make the time far enough away where it would definitely be some sort of problem if not back by then. Like midnight.

I haven't seen much about what will come of the cave, except for this:

[Thai Prime Minister] Prayuth said the Tham Luang cave would be closed for some time to make it safe for visitors.

Is The independent considered reliable or senastionalist reporting? I'm not sure whether to consider this a good source..?

Classmates of trapped Thai boys 'still plan to explore caves themselves'
--For adolescent boys in this mountainous region of far northern Thailand, venturing deep into the dark and mysterious Tham Luang cave network is seen as a rite of passage.

--Journeys venturing inside the cave were a regular part of training for the "Wild Boars" youth football team, building camaraderie

--“They will be stronger when they come out,” said Nanthawat Prangsangwilia, a gangly 16-year-old who goes by the nickname Gan.

“When they come home, those kids will be able to teach us something – about how to survive, about how to stay safe in the caves.”

--Gan declared that, armed with the wisdom of the survivors, he would still be willing now to head into the caves that have threatened to claim the lives of his fellow students.

--Locals say that the ill-fated trip inside Tham Luang was one in a series of excursions, where the boys would push further and further inside the underground labyrinth, hardening them for the rigours of both the pitch and regular life.

    Tourist attraction? Hollywood film?

What’s next for the Thai cave?
Officials are reportedly preparing for the Chiang Rai site to become a “world-class tourist attraction”, while Hollywood producers are in discussion about making a major film out of it.

    ‘A WORLD-CLASS TOURIST ATTRACTION’
The Thai cave looks set to become a massive new moneymaker.
Thai officials have hinted the Tham Luang complex where the dramatic rescue mission unfolded may be turned into a sightseeing destination.
“In this crisis situation, today, I don’t want to talk about work, but I think the Thai people, we are lucky that we are going to have a world-class tourist attraction,” Thailand’s deputy head of national parks Chongklai Woraponsathron said.
Last week, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said it planned to promote the Tham Luang cave as a tourist attraction after it featured so prominently in the news.
The agency is expecting a major increase in visitors to the 10km limestone cave after the rescue garnered global attention.

Thailand Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said extra precautions would have to be implemented to safeguard tourists wanting to visit the cave.

“In future, we have to monitor the entrance and exit to the cave. This cave has become world-famous … we have to install more lights inside the cave and put up signs,” he told reporters in Bangkok.

He also said the cave was “dangerous” and added that it would be closed to the public until “everything is in order”.

The decision ultimately rests with the Thailand Department of Natural Resources, but it wouldn’t be totally outlandish.

For one thing, the place is steeped in local history.

According to Fairfax, the cave is known to locals as the Tham Luang Nang Non — the great cave of the sleeping lady — and from an angle does vaguely resemble a person lying down.

Locals believe the sleeping lady was a princess who fell pregnant to a local stablehand. The devastated princess killed herself after her father ordered his soldiers to kill the boy, and the legend now goes that the water flowing through the cave is her blood.

I thought the exact same thing, but wasn't sure if I wanted to mention that or not. *gulp*
But although "Harry" is used to recovery rather than rescue, how oddly amazing is it that he is also a qualified anesthetist.
He's a skilled cave diver, skilled extraction specialist, and a skilled anesthetist. Really, can hardly get any more specialized than that - and he was precisely what was needed for this rescue.
    How 'bout them apples?
I'm going to have to start numbering all the miracle puzzle pieces that perfectly fit together. From first to last. (Lordy, that would take forever.)
These divers are such an elite group; and I'm so very glad they called him in.

The precious little 11 old boy is sleeping again. He was sleeping inside the cave also in one of the earlier videos.
He loves to take naps. :D
