What are the facts in this case?

The McCann’s left three vulnerable toddlers home alone every night, at an apartment in a foreign holiday complex, so they could party with seven (or eight) close friends, all medical practitioners. Gerry allegedly checked the children at 9:05pm and all was well. An hour later Kate found Maddy was missing and left the twins (with a predator at large) to return to the Tapas Bar shrieking, “They’ve taken her!” Ocean Club staff and locals began searching for the child. Forty minutes later, the police were alerted. There were no independent witnesses of the abduction and no forensic evidence indicating an intruder, no CCTV footage and no credible leads. Robert Murat was implicated by the McCann entourage and made an Arguido, he has since been cleared. Hundreds of possible sightings proved fruitless.

The parents believed she was no longer in Portugal and visited random places to publicise their plight, all expenses paid by a generous billionaire benefactor. The British government and their media mouthpieces gave the McCann’s their full support. Meanwhile, the Polícia Judiciária collated testimonies and collected forensic evidence which was sufficient to name the McCann’s as formal suspects. The couple left the country instantly and the press smeared all aspects of the investigation, even the cadaver dogs! The McCann’s claim it is they who are being smeared and framed, because the police operation was botched. They failed to catch the kidnapper, so they blamed the parents. Sightings have persisted, specifically in Morocco, but the CID are so convinced the child is dead, they give this no credence.

Detectives believe the reams of evidence they have gathered against the McCann’s, which no-one else is privy to, is so strong that the only thing which remains, is to locate the body. The McCann’s, through their spokesman Clarence Mitchell, insist all the leaked evidence has an innocent explanation. Any DNA discovered either came from the twin’s soiled nappies or Madeleine’s sweaty sandals. The scent of cadaver came from rotting meat, carried in the boot of their hire car. The unusually high mileage of this car was accounted for by fifteen trips to Faro airport. If the FSS in Birmingham detect sedatives in hair samples, Granny McCann says, the perpetrator drugged the victim and not her anaesthetist mother. They will persist in the belief that Madeleine is still alive, until concrete evidence suggests otherwise.

The McCann’s have become celebrities, in demand from chat show hosts and glossy magazines. They hope to clear their names by Christmas. I would be hoping my daughter turned up, safe and well, long before December! But they are in this for the long haul... Gerry continues to write his jaunty blogs, about the twins, and what a jolly family they are, without Madeleine. The opinions of their relations and friends are the only ones sought by journalists. Anyone who doubts their innocence is considered a scurrilous wretch, devoid of compassion for this unfortunate couple and their missing daughter. They are prepared to take a lie detector test and welcome possible charges, because it will give them a chance to defend themselves. “Bring it on!” they say... with four top lawyers waiting in the wings.

I don't think there can be reams of evidence or else they wouldn't need a body surely.

    OR...

The McCann's made the naive decision to leave their children unattended while they dined with friends on the other side of a pool; in view of their room, with an adult checking on them every half hour.

When Kate checked on the children at 10:00, she found Madeleine missing, and came out of the room screaming. There are conflicting reports of her exact words. The police were notified, and they arrived approximately 40 minutes later.

The policed failed to secure the crime scene, and didn't send out alerts to CCTV security or boarder security. There are conflicting reports of whether Robert Murat was seen at the complex or not, and as of today, remains a suspect.

The McCann's, with the advice of experts, launched a media campaign. (As John Walsh says, “70 percent of children are found by pictures.”) They hired private investigators to draw up a profile, and to search outside of Portugal. They handed out fliers and pictures of their daughter.

Meanwhile, the police, trying to save a botched investigation, try to collect forensic evidence to use against the McCann's. There are conflicting reports as to the quality, reliability, and results of those tests. The police begin to leak untrue items of information to the media in an effort to put pressure on the McCann's to confess, thereby "solving" the case.

Incidentally, the lead detective has been removed from the case. Reports that he's been seen taking three hour lunches, ignoring leads, and that he's under investigation for torturing another mom into confessing she killed her child don't get much mention.

The McCann's hired a spokesperson to try to explain their side of things, since they are bound by law to not speak about the details of the case. Many friends and family have opined possible reasons to explain things, much of which is taken as gospel by McCann family detractors.

Even though there is no evidence that Kate or Gerry McCann killed their daughter, detractors are willing to believe almost everything they read in the news, regardless of the accuracy or logic in the report. Anyone who believes that there is not enough evidence available to decide on their guilt, and choose to give the benefit of doubt to the parents, are treated as imbeciles for their inability to read villainy into every move, every word, every look coming from the McCann's or anyone related, no matter how remotely.

The McCann's are damned if they do, and damned if they don't, demonized by those who figure that if they can leave children alone, they must be murderers.

First of all, even many areas in the US work on a 'no body, no conviction' basis. Many criminals go unpunished and get away with 'murder', but that doesn't mean they have no ties to the crime. It just means it's circumstancial and not enough to convict.

First we still don't know for certain if "They've taken her" were Kates first words spoken to Tapas group. I have also heard "Madeleines gone" as her first words. Even the nanny stsed that she can't say those were her first words but that evening she said that.

Next the lease to the villa they were renting was up Sept. 11 and the week before they were planning on returning home the police asked them to stay so they could ask them some more questions. Okay yes kate did say she wouldn't go home without madeleine but after four month you have to do something you can't live in lingo forever. So no I don't think they rushed home I think it was something they planned on doing. also if the police case was so strong why did the police let them leave.

Really? So they could see the room from where they were, an adult was checking on them every 30 minutes but the kid is kidnapped and they do not see anything. Interesting.

Yeah, selling wristbands as well as having to pay for her posters online. But hey, they are "high" quality.

So, we cannot believe the Media and now neither what it comes out from their own friends and family members?

Exactly. Plus, just because someone gets away with murder (and how many do!) does not mean they are not guilty. OJ Simpson anyone?

They could not see the patio doors. And, no one is disputing that it was a bad decision.

It is a reality that it takes money to run a campaign of this magnitude.

We can keep in mind that what we are hearing are the opinions of others. What I've seen happen repeatedly is detractors hear these opinions, then proceed to tear the McCann's apart over them.

And, just because some parents are guilty of false accusations of abduction or murder doesn't mean that all parents reporting abduction or murder are guilty in reality.

As far as I know, the fund is set up legally, distributed legally, and has oversight. In other words, I would assume it's being used as it was meant to be.

No, the police weren't notified until 40 minutes later (despite what Kate told Mrs. Fenn), and they arrived within 15 minutes after that.

No, the PJ tried to square what the McCanns insisted was a stranger abduction with the evidence that the room and conflicting testimony from many witnesses provided. The more they investigated, the more it looked as if Madeleine wasn't abducted, nor were there any signs that she'd wandered out of the apartment on her own (no body alongside the road or in the ocean or pools, etc). And it was the arrival of the British police teams at the end of July that began pushing towards Madeleine's death before the parents went to dinner.

Portugal, like Spain, Mexico and many Latin countries, take time off in the middle of the day and make up for it by going to work earlier and staying later. Are you trying to say a country should toss aside its customs just because a crime has been committed there? It is the British press (according to you, very unreliable) who claims these things about the head detective. For all we know, he removed himself from the case so it could move on without any scandal attached.

Nobody should be talking about this case. Not the media leaks, not the family, not their friends. And I don't take what the family and friends say as gospel; I don't believe any of it.

How do you know there isn't any evidence? From what I've read it sounds as if they have plenty of evidence. Do they have enough to convict? Maybe. Maybe not.

Strike 1: These people say their 3-year-old's favorite show is "Dr Who". This makes them either unfit parents, or liars.

Strike 2: Kate attributes cadaver scent on Cuddle Cat to her having taken it to work. This makes her either an unfit parent, or a liar.

Does anyone (colomom, maybe?) have a source for that Cuddle cat quote?

It seems things are starting to get a little personal. I have one view on this and that is to find out what happened to Madeleine McCann. I read all posters view I may not agree - but everyone is entitled to their opinion. We should respect each others views.
