We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties. We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update.

'Severe threat' of an 'imminent' terror attack at Kabul airport, British armed forces minister warns | Daily Mail Online

At least 13 people including children have been killed in two separate explosions near Kabul airport, with three US soldiers wounded, just hours after warnings of an 'imminent' and 'lethal' ISIS terror attack.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the blast, one of which ripped through a crowd of Afghans gathered at the Abbey gate of the Hamid Karzai airport, and another which hit Barons Hotel, followed by gunfire amid the mass panic.

Images from the scene show scores of bloodied people being carried away from the bombsite in wheelbarrows after one of the bombers detonated in a sewage canal-way packed with people.

Sky News chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay said the passage was overlooked by US soldiers and he had been told that there were casualties among the American troops, adding: 'This could be the end of the airlift.'

Meanwhile an Afghan man queueing to enter the airport said the explosion hit the middle of a crowd of thousands, and he saw many injured and maimed people and was told of multiple fatalities.

Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby said: 'We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can.'

A Number 10 spokesman said Boris Johnson has been updated on the situation and will chair a COBR meeting later this afternoon.

Following the explosions, Germany announced all its military planes have left Kabul and it has finished its evacuation operation.

It's a bad situation on the ground, but if a suicide bomber can get himself and his bomb aboard one of those giant transport plane he might be able to bring the plane down with a total loss of life.

I hate to even like your post. But I must say the thought has crossed my mind. Sept 11 is just around the corner. What better message to send to Americans than that? What a cluster! I am not at all confident that our "leaders" have thoroughly thought of all contingencies... as evidenced by this fiasco unfolding.
And if they claim they have, I call b* !

Russia: 2 suicide attacks outside Kabul airport; 13 dead
''KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Twin suicide bombings struck Thursday outside Kabul’s airport, where large crowds of people trying to flee Afghanistan have massed, killing at least 13 people, Russian officials said.

''Western nations had warned earlier in the day of a possible attack at the airport in the waning days of a massive airlift. Suspicion for any attack targeting the crowds would likely fall on the Islamic State group and not the Taliban, who have been deployed at the airport’s gates trying to control the mass of people.''

Russia’s Foreign Ministry gave the first official casualty count, saying 13 people had died and 15 were wounded.

U.S. officials said that American personnel were wounded in the blast, without elaborating
. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing operations.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby also confirmed the blasts, saying one near an airport entrance was a “complex attack” and another was a short distance away by a hotel.''

At least 60 people wounded in Kabul attacks

We reported earlier (see 4.08pm post) that 30 people were injured in a suspected suicide bombing in Afghanistan.

The Kabul Surgical Centre now says 60 people have arrived at the hospital with injuries.

It is believed at least 13 are dead, but this number is expected to increase.

* The media worldwide are going to jump on the story about the stranded American school children in Afghanistan.
It will be nearly all that dominates the worldwide news tomorrow.
The media will have their names and bios before dawn.
I hope that the Taliban does not find them. I forsee a major hostage situation, because all money to Afghanistan has been frozen by the world Bank.

How Jen Psaki today, was unaware of these children is astounding.
I'm very sure these children and their guardians used passports to enter Afghanistan.
If you thought that President Biden was under criticism, you ain't seen nothing yet.
If he turns his back on journalists questioning him about these kids, or mumbles about this situation,
Or blames the children for being there, Who Boy. Big fireworks.

The 24 students and 16 parents were vacationing in Afghanistan to visit family. The trip was not sanctioned by the district. It sounds like the lines are somewhat blurred as to whether this was a school trip, or a group of families that decided to vacation in a war zone as a group. Either way, they did not leave when the Taliban were marching towards Kabul.

Since they have family in Afghanistan, the parents might have Afghan passports, and the Taliban may decide that they are Afghanis and that they should remain in Afghanistan. They took an huge risk by visiting the war zone. I'm not convinced that there's anything to be done to help them.

"Dozens of San Diego County-area school students and their parents are stranded in Afghanistan, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times, after taking a trip abroad for summer vacation.

The outlet reported that at least 24 students and 16 parents from Cajon Valley Union School District in El Cajon, California, visited Afghanistan earlier this summer and are now among the thousands of people who are stranded in the war-torn country as the Taliban continues to take over.

On Tuesday, Cajon Valley Superintendent David Miyashiro announced that the students and adults traveled to the country on special visa for U.S. military services, and that the Department of Defense "considers them allies."
...

The New York Post reported that the trip — which was not sanctioned by the district — was for students and their parents to visit with extended relatives.

And so it begins. The Taliban oust foreigners, warring factions challenge the Taliban, and life returns to normal in Afghanistan.

That's the hotel the 169 Americans who had to be helicoptered 650 feet to the airport the other day were instructed to gather. The link is upthread. I can probably find it again if necessary. I'm guessing it's a known American gathering point.

Here's a link. It's not the same one I posted before, but has the same info.

Emptying the prisons ...

"Thousands of inmates, including former Islamic State and al-Qaeda fighters, were released from a prison on the outskirts of Kabul as the Taliban called for a "peaceful transition" of power.

Afghan government troops surrendered Bagram airbase to the Taliban early on Sunday. The base houses Pul-e-Charki prison, which has around 5,000 prisoners. It is the largest in Afghanistan and notorious for its poor conditions. A maximum-security cellblock held members of al Qaeda and Taliban, said reports.

Footage published by an independent Afghan news agency, which supports the Taliban, appears to show militants letting the inmates out.

Several killed in explosions outside Kabul airport
''US officials strongly believe the Afghan affiliate of the ISIL (ISIS), known as the Islamic State Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K), was behind the attack, a source familiar with congressional briefings on Afghanistan said.

A second US government source familiar with intelligence activities said that while the US government is still investigating, the airport attack has “all the hallmarks” of an ISKP attack.

ISKP is opposed by the US and the Taliban.''

Analysis: Group known as Islamic State Khorasan Province, or Isis-K, poses ‘acute’ and ‘persistent’ threat, says US

''Many have been worried by an intensification of attacks linked to Isis-K in recent months.''

“The trajectory of ISKP has been one of resurgence after a tough time in 2019 and the first half of 2020 … but they went silent suddenly since the Taliban takeover and a possible reason for that was the group were gearing up for a new campaign,” said Charlie Winter, a senior research fellow at London University’s Centre for the Study of Radicalisation.''

The crowds, planes and infrastructure at the airport provide an obvious venue for the kind of mass-casualty attack that Isis has become known for. But Winter said, the situation was also, for the group, a “perfect meeting of diverse targets” in Afghanistan: the US military, Afghans who have helped the western effort and are therefore seen as collaborators and the Taliban, which Isis-K sees as “apostates”.
Isis-K is likely to see an attack against the airport as a “great victory”.
  • “They achieve several things: they hit legitimate targets (from their perspective), they send a signal of still being a force to be reckoned with and they challenge the Taliban’s state project by highlighting that the group can’t secure Kabul.”

Forgive me if I'm skeptical of al jazeera's take on whether the Taliban opposed ISKP.
