Where we are one year later....

The hard truth about the Great Eldorado Polygamist Roundup is that despite all the tough, hang-em high rhetoric and demagoguing by state and local officials, the massive police action probably made it harder, not easier to identify or prevent abuse within the group. It caused Eldorado polygamists to circle the wagons to protect their innocent brethren, and made kids more fearful of the state than of their religious leaders, which means they'll be less likely to speak out when bad things happen.

Nothing makes a religion like a martyr. The Bible leans on the stories of those who put faith first, who sacrificed their freedom and their families, who laid down their lives for the Lord. Through all their persecution, the polygamists talk of nothing but strength.

"The outside pressure from the government only reinforces their convictions," says [FLDS researcher Ken] Driggs, "reinforces the belief that 'We are God's chosen people, and we are going to be persecuted for living God's laws.' "

In other words Texas blew it, however this handful of prosecutions turns out. Just like in the aftermath to the Short Creek debacle, if there are actual abused kids among the FLDS, Texas ' actions made it more difficult, not easier, for them to get help - and not just in Texas but in other locales.

Nielsen, a 72-year-old FLDS member, was released from the C.T. Terrell Unit last week after serving 13 months in prison. He was convicted of three counts of bigamy and sentenced to 10 years in March 2012. Time served was considered in setting his release date.

Nielsen was up for parole review April 25, TDCJ spokesman Jason Clark said, and was granted parole by the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole.

In the time since Nielsen was sent to prison, County Road 300 has become far less congested — like the YFZ Ranch itself.

Cattle and chickens no longer are visible from aerial shots of the property, Schleicher County Sheriff David Doran said, but it appears a vegetable garden has sprung up.

"They've moved a lot of people and equipment off the property," he said.

***Where have they been moved???

And now it is yet another year still.....

So nice to see that Rick Perry has the country's eye upon him.

This man let innocent women and children be herded like cattle in to a "shelter" causing unknown amounts of fear and emotional damage.

His justification was that he would find the "guilty" by doing this.

Well we see how that ended.

When all was said and done, he had less guilty people in his roundup than he would have had if he had gone in any large American subdivision and rounded up the same amount of women and children.

The difference was THAT would have caused a huge outcry about peoples rights.

This whole case obscured peoples judgement because they were so morally offended by the FLDS (with good right) that they took LESS offense to Governor Perry's trampling on human rights that are basic expectations. Or should be.

One day as history lends her fair hand to the story, this case will be looked at askance the same way as when the Japanese were herded in to "camps" in the 40's.

A big mistake based on emotion. A political maneuver. The residual trauma left to the women and children.

So even though Governor Perry will never have to answer for the above, it is nice to see he may have to answer for something. Anything.
