This is how it starts: FBI suspiciously locks down,
evacuates solar observatory in New Mexico

    This is
how it happens when extraterrestrials make contact with Earth.

It starts with a newspaper report about suspicious activity at a space research facility —government agents and military vehicles. The local sheriff gets angry and confused. Then the TV news reports feature interviews with locals saying things like, “Nothing really happens here very much. And since nobody knows, it could be almost anything.”

All that has happened over the last week at the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, 130 miles southwest of Roswell—and the situation is still a mystery.

That is weird. But you will never know what the issue was because it has to do with security. Maybe someone hacked records, or what they were observing? I have no idea.

The rest of the whole big world out there wants to know why aliens are always trying to land in the US. There are many places out there that they could land and even get free health care.

Right? Look how we treat human immigrants if they don't look exactly like us. If space aliens are smart enough to get to Earth they are smart enough to avoid the USA.

Some say the evacuation could be part of a government effort to cover up a discovery involving aliens, an impending solar flare or something else extra-planetary. Others on Reddit and elsewhere think the security issue may involve a foreign power attempting to use the observatory's antennas to spy on nearby White Sands Missile Range.
Mysterious observatory evacuation stirs alien conspiracy theories

Commenters on the observatory’s Facebook page ran with the alien theory, too. “When the aliens invade we have nowhere to evacuate to anyway; the truth will be our destiny,” wrote Gene Alexander, one of dozens who have commented on Facebook.

“Something was spotted. And we’re not being told,” wrote a man named Eddie Barnhill.

John Pleites-Sandoval offered a more involved theory: “Maybe a celestial body that we have not encountered in a long while for thousands of years is finally making its way back into our solar system,” he wrote on Facebook.

'Telescope Did Not See Aliens,' Director of
    Mysteriously Shut Down Observatory Claims

    =
Theories about the true reasoning behind the shutdown range from an accidental interception of military signals to captured proof of alien life.

Now, James McAteer, director of the Sunspot Solar Observatory, has seemingly ruled out one of those theories. McAteer told local news outlet KOB that the “telescope did not see aliens. All data will be made public in its unaltered form. Nothing is hidden or kept secret.”

McAteer, a professor at New Mexico State University, clarified to Gizmodo that we probably wouldn’t even find extraterrestrials with a telescope. “Any aliens in our vicinity of the Universe are very likely microbial,” McAteer told Gizmodo. He also dispelled other theories. “There was no killer solar storm. Solar storms happen all the time. No observations of an imaginary planet.”

But he said he does not know why the FBI were involved.

AURA Statement about the Status of the Sunspot Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico

    September 16, 2018

Sunspot Solar Observatory is transitioning back to regular operations as of September 17th

On September 6th, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) made the decision to temporarily vacate the Sunspot Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico as a precautionary measure while addressing a security issue. The facility closed down in an orderly fashion and is now re-opening. The residents that vacated their homes will be returning to the site, and all employees will return to work this week.

AURA has been cooperating with an on-going law enforcement investigation of criminal activity that occurred at Sacramento Peak. During this time, we became concerned that a suspect in the investigation potentially posed a threat to the safety of local staff and residents. For this reason, AURA temporarily vacated the facility and ceased science activities at this location.

The decision to vacate was based on the logistical challenges associated with protecting personnel at such a remote location, and the need for expeditious response to the potential threat. AURA determined that moving the small number of on-site staff and residents off the mountain was the most prudent and effective action to ensure their safety.

In light of recent developments in the investigation, we have determined there is no risk to staff, and Sunspot Solar Observatory is transitioning back to regular operations as of September 17th. Given the significant amount of publicity the temporary closure has generated, and the consequent expectation of an unusual number of visitors to the site, we are temporarily engaging a security service while the facility returns to a normal working environment.

We recognize that the lack of communications while the facility was vacated was concerning and frustrating for some. However, our desire to provide additional information had to be balanced against the risk that, if spread at the time, the news would alert the suspect and impede the law enforcement investigation. That was a risk we could not take.

KOB spoke exclusively with an employee at the observatory who said he believes the FBI investigation could revolve around the theft of some expensive equipment.

"It really didn't surprise me that FBI might be showing up someday, due to the things that have been going on at the site prior to the evacuation,” said the Sunspot employee, who KOB is not naming on the basis of anonymity. "I have noticed that Sunspot is basically, what I would call, a breeding ground for crime."

He said loose security management at the site has led to criminal trespassing, vandalism and theft.

"We discovered what appears to be, it's still under investigation, the theft of $15,000 of electronic test equipment,” he said, adding most people wouldn’t even know what the equipment comprises. “The only type of person that would need it is someone working on a communications system."

This sounds realistic. Maybe someone knew or suspected the thefts and was getting threats to stop them from reporting it.

    This is concerning, though

    BBM.

They really should make sure the facility is safe. They mention a suspect, but nothing about an arrest. It's in a rather remote area up in the mountains. Not a lot around there, few neighbors, no businesses to speak of and closest LE is pretty far away. It's a beautiful area, though.

If the theft could be considered an act of terrorism, we may never hear another word.
