WATCH LIVE: Suspects In 2020 Nurse Murder Case Appear In Court

WSMV 4 Nashville - Nov 15, 2022

A trial is set to begin Jan. 23 for the two men charged after Nashville nurse Caitlyn Kaufman was fatally shot while driving to work in December 2020.

Kaufman was working as an intensive care unit nurse at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West and tending to COVID-19 patients. The evening of Dec. 3, 2020, she was fatally shot on a busy corridor along Interstate 440 in West Nashville. She was 26.

Devaunte Lewis Hill, 23, and James Cowan, 30, were later arrested in connection with Kaufman's death. Both face first-degree murder charges. Nashville police said road rage may have been a motivation in the shooting.

Certainly not the verdict that most expected:

"After a trial lasting more than a week, a jury acquitted one of the two men charged in the death of nurse Caitlyn Kaufman on I-440 while finding the other defendant guilty of a lesser charge.

On Tuesday the jury found Devaunte Hill guilty of second-degree murder, and returned a not guilty verdict on all charges for James Cowan. Hill fired shots that killed Kaufman two years ago in what was described as a road rage shooting. Cowan was in the car with Hill at the time of the shooting, but the jury found he was not responsible for Kaufman's death."

Hill will remain in custody and return to court Friday, March 3. He faces between 15 and 25 years in prison, his attorney said.

A jury found DeVaunte Hill guilty of second degree murder in the road rage shooting of Caitlyn Kaufman Tuesday. He faces up to 25 years in prison at sentencing, which is scheduled for March 3.

However, the jury found James Cowan, the driver of the car, not guilty — a complete acquittal.

It was unclear if Cowan would be immediately released from the Davidson County jail and go home after spending the past two years behind bars awaiting trial.

Authorities say when Cowan was arrested for the murder of Kaufman two years ago, he was found to be in possession of narcotics and guns. He is already a convicted felon.

So, in addition to the murder charge, Cowan also faced charges for drug possession and felon in possession of gun. Those charges remain active.

Devaunte Hill, the man convicted of killing Nashville nurse Caitlyn Kaufman during her commute to work in December 2020, will spend 25 in prison.

Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Angelita Blackshear Dalton filed her sentencing order March 29 after taking impact statements and arguments from attorneys on March 3.
