TN - Michael & Shirley Gray, aggravated kidnap & child abuse, 2 children dead, Roane Co., May 2020

Clarifying for you and anyone else wondering, as it does seem to be getting confusing:

There are two separate sites being investigated in connection with MG and SG. The first is the house in Ten Mile/Roane County, where they had lived since 2016. This is the site where the children were locked in the basement, and the daughter was found buried in the barn.

As of this past Saturday, there is a second site being investigated. The Grays formerly lived in a house in the Halls community/Knox County, a house which their son MG Jr is the current owner and occupant. That house was visited by authorities with the coroner removing something from the house in the wee hours of Saturday morning, with digging in the backyard and removal of other items from the house on Sat. and Sunday.

Hopefully that clears it up a bit for new readers.

Oh geez. :( Poor kids.

Sound like, from reading this article, that they had 5 adopted children, with 3 of those being adopted in Knox county. Wonder where the others were from? Mississippi, where they lived previously?

Also sounds like the biological son will likely be charged with something as well. And surely the biological daughter must have known if she lived there too....

Wow...that is so cold of them. Imo. The other children would of ended up buried...it is not like they could be left to ask questions when adult. Basically the Gray's would of been serial killers. Imoo

Warrant: Remains recovered from Knox County house related to Roane County child abuse case

"The remains of a child were recovered in a search of a Knox County house in connection to a gruesome Roane County case where a young girl’s remains were found.

A heavy law enforcement presence was seen in the 6000 block of Cedarbreeze Road on Saturday to search home where Michael Gray Sr, Shirley Gray and Michael Gray Jr. had all lived there together until three or four years ago before moving to Roane County.

Gray Sr. and Shirley Gray have been charged with multiple counts of child abuse and child neglect after admitting their adopted daughter was buried in the backyard of their Roane County home and that they had locked their 15-year-old son in a basement.

Neighbors of the Knox County house said they saw authorities digging a big hole and bringing something out of a shed-like cage on Saturday.

According to the arrest warrant, investigators believe Michael Gray Jr. was aware of child abuse and neglect at the Knox County home and claimed the two deceased children on federal income tax returns as dependents for at least the past calendar year."

"The Children Just Wanted Some Loving", Halls Neighbor Tells WVLT Regarding Roane Co. Case

One neighbors told WVLT News Anchor Amanda Hara that he remembers the children for the conversations they had.

"Well there were two little girls and they were older than the little boys. The girls could hold conversation just like the adults. Especially the oldest one," said Homer Johnson.

Johnson said the boys that lived in the home were very quiet , but seemed to want attention, "They never had much to say, but they were always wanting somebody to love them."

How did these people manage to adopt so many kids? No accountability to anyone apparently. This was a business for them. How much do you get for an adopted child? Must have been good money. Then son was claiming them on his tax. How come he and his wife aren't charged with something? Aiding and abetting in torture would be one. What about the tax? That should be a charge.
There seems to be so many of these child abuse cases being found out now. Not just in the USA. Australia is also having a spate of them.

I am a special ed teacher with some experience with foster families, so looking at this case through that lens has me ticked off to no end. The article Mind your biscuits shared in post #32 says MG/SG were collecting stipends/state money for the children, including the two already deceased. That tells me that they adopted these children through the foster care system, as private adoptions do not receive stipends afaik. A high percentage of children in the foster system are classed as special needs (here in TN anyway) - something like 90%. I wonder if the endgame was to keep these kids locked up, even as adults, in order to sign them up for SSDI and continue to collect a monthly check. I am not an expert on any of this, but that makes some sense to me. SO yes, it looks like this was a business for them.

Assuming MG/SG did adopt through the foster system, how in the world did they ever pass the home inspections, etc? And it's my understanding that you have to prove you already support yourself/your biological family adequately before ever receiving a foster placement, so that the state can weed out people trying to use foster care as supplemental income. How did they meet those requirements??

That is beyond heartbreaking.

Memorial For Child Whose Remains Were Found Buried At Halls Home Grows (with video)

"Halls neighbors struggled to understand what happened to a child whose remains were found buried in the backyard of a home where Michael Gray Sr. and Shirly Gray once lived. The Gray's were charged after police found remains of a child buried in the back yard of their Roane County home. Later in the investigation, the remains of a second child were found buried behind a home in Knox County.

Bonnie Johnson lived in a home behind the Gray's Halls residence.

"I feel really bad I really do especially being their neighbors, like right behind them," said Johnson.

Johnson, like many neighbors, said she had no idea such 'horrible things' were going on inside the home just yards away from her own house."
