TN TN - Oak Ridge, Melton Hill Lake, "Lady in the Lake", WhtFem 24-35, 272UFTN, ring w/cross, Mar'00

Personally, I wouldn't take my clothes off to commit suicide either, but some people do. Also, I was wondering what the waters are like that she was found in, or if she could have jumped in at another area where the water was rougher. I have heard some stories of rough waters actually pulling the clothing off people.

I grew up very close to this location and swam in this river at a nearby park (just around the bend from where the UID was found) almost every week during the summer as a kid. The river is generally very, very slow moving, although there are a few places where it is faster, such as the stretches below the dams. But in general, it is not the kind of current that I think could tear someones clothes off..but I am no expert.

I don't ever recall anyone swimming in February...although on a warm day I think friends and I would have gone swimming in spring and fall. Not winter though.

I looked at some maps and saw that there are no places that would have rapids or a big enough current to tear someone's clothes off.
While not very wide in places, it seems like the river is part of the reservoir (or backwaters) all the way from the Melton Hill Dam to the Norris Dam. But that shows that she should have entered the water between the two dams.

She couldn't have entered above Norris Dam as she couldn't float through it. If she did manage to get through, there would be much more trauma. She would have to "float" through a hydroelectric station, which I figured would not leave her body with so little trauma that was found on her body.

I was just in the area this weekend. Drove by it yesterday. Lake Melton is a part of the Clinch River. No way would anyone in their right mind be swimming there in Feb!

Its a very clean lake, and the water is slow moving. It isn't going to tear anyone's clothes off. If she had gone through Norris Dam, I would think there would have been trauma to the body. I am trying to remember.....I believe its possible to jump into lake Norris/clinch River from a roadway. at the top of the dam..over the lake..... I have a family member that told me her did that as a teen...but if she ended up in lake Melton after doing this she would have also had to have gone over the dam.

Her Doenet entry has this information:

On March 6, 2000, two fishermen found the nude body of this victim female floating in Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, TN. Melton Lake is in Anderson County Tennessee. It is a reservoir of the Clinch River, and is located in the Tennessee Valley Authority area. Based solely on the natural flow of the river, police believe the victim went into the water approximately a quarter mile upstream, in neighboring Knox County.
The victim may have disappeared around February of 2000. She may have had a reason to be at the Clinche River around this time. It is possible she could have been a victim of a kidnapping.

This is a picture i took last summer of Norris Dam. That is lake Norris to the left. There is a road at the top of the dam that you drive across in order to reach a marina and the lookout where the picture was made from. It is possible to jump into the lake from this road. To the bottom right of this picture, not seen is the water from the dam which flows into Lake Melton just a few miles downstream.

If I had to narrow it down (and if she were local or with a local) I'd say someone talked her into getting out of the house to go swimming on Feb 16th (the high was 71F) supposing to celebrate the first warm day of the month? And whomever it was held her under until she drowned.
I guess knowing the official cause of death and observation of her body would help in this situation; but I'm just going to go with my gut on this one..
JMHO

My first thought was some idiot that went skinny dipping and drown. If what you say about the temperature is right (and I'm sure it is, I'm just too lazy to Google it) a non-local might not have realized that just because the air is warm doesn't mean the water is*. Hypothermia can hit pretty fast.

*Kind of like my trying to explain to my 4-year that just because it's sunny doesn't mean it's warm enough to outside in shorts and a tank top in February.

I'm fascinated by this Jane Doe. I've tried to find out about her. I came across a woman that went missing in Alaska in 1998. She was last seen at an airport. Did she fly to another state and then TN? The height and weight are very close. It may be a long shot, but people do decide to get on a plane then go somewhere new. It says Sabine was a German citizen. There isn't much info on her. Here are the links:

She could have jumped. That's sad. But somebody had to have reported her missing. I have been thinking of driving out there to Oak Ridge. It's about 3 hrs from my home. It's a beautiful area. There was an unusual amount of women being murdered in Jellico, TN, Campbell County, in the mid 80's. Not far at all from Oak Ridge.

Sabine looks very interesting as a possible. There are no identifiers available on Sabine, so she would have never been subject to a comparison (automated or otherwise).

These links might give some insight to the area. Its a lovely area, and always lots of people around. There are several restaurants, parks, the rowing club, so people in the water and out. People out walking, jogging, rowing, walking dogs, children on the playgrounds.

I was there in Feb when there was lots of snow and freezing temps. No rowers, but lots of people jogging, walking and a few cycling.

Its kind of hard to describe a place that sounds so busy yet is also very rural, and there are, parts of it that are away from everyone, especially when you get close to the government land own by the defense Dept.

Lauria Jaylene Bible went missing in December of 1999. Jane Doe was found in March of 2000. Doe Network has Lauria's height at 5'6, the Charley Project has 5'5. Jane Doe has 5'9. The Doe Network says that Jane Doe is a possible kidnap victim. It wouldn't be impossible for someone to abduct her and cross into TN. I-40 stretches across the entire state. Stop at a hotel or rest stop, then the victim tries to escape, even possibly naked, she could have tried to swim across the river, then drowned as a result. Another possibility is someone drove across that bridge with her in the vehicle, they simply stopped the car and dropped Doe into the water naked. Leaving no evidence but a drowning. Lauria does have a mole. But the profile for Doe doesn't say anything about that. The jawline and pics look close to me.

Here is a side by side of both Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible next to the UID

Just looking at the teeth though (even though it's somewhat hard to tell) the teeth on the UID look straight and without noticeable gaps so I'm not sure if it's either of them because Lauria looks like she has a noticeable gap in between her two front teeth and Ashley has a noticeable crooked incisor tooth on her right side.

I happened to be at Melton Lake this afternoon so I made a few pictures. It actually looks more like a stream than a lake.

This is the side of Norris Dam the water comes through, into the Clinch River just a few miles above Melton Lake.
