Police identify 'person of interest' in case.

Investigators have identified "a person of interest" in the case of a Madison County man who has been missing for more than three months.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation into the disappearance of Raymond Clifford "Popeye" Thomas III, Sheriff David Woolfork said. "We're looking at a person of interest," he said, but he declined to comment further at this time.

Thomas, 33, was reported missing June 1 by his wife, Candice, who had not seen him since mid-May. The couple has two children.

Based on two anonymous phone calls and the discovery of Thomas' 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck burned in a Madison County field, investigators have said they believe foul play is involved. The anonymous callers told investigators that Thomas was abducted from a local establishment. The truck was found in a field on Batchelor Loop near Tenn. 138 in late May.

Thomas is described as a white male, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 230 pounds with blue eyes and brownish-blond hair.

Family, friends and church members announced earlier this summer that a $2,500 reward would be offered for Thomas' recovery.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Madison County Sheriff's Department at 423-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 424-8477. If you'd like to help the family, donations can be made to Oaklawn Baptist Church, at 1350 North Parkway. The church's phone number is 422-5882

In December 2005, Reggie Carnell James was charged with Thomas's murder. At his January 2007 trial, witnesses testified that James shot Thomas to death at James's residence between May 18 and May 26, weighted the corpse with concrete blocks, and dumped it in the Forked Deer River. The carpet and carpet pad at James's home were soaked with a substantial amount of human blood, which supported the prosecution's theory.

DNA testing was unable to match the blood to Thomas because the sample was degraded. James was convicted of first degree murder.....

Thomas's remains have never been found.
