Tour Bus Accident - Multiple Deaths, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (Mexico)

How sad! Looks like the story at the link has been updated to show 12 dead. Cruise line says 27 of their passengers were on the bus. From the photo with the article, it doesn't appear to be a dangerous road, pretty flat. Perhaps another vehicle ran them off the road or something malfunctioned on the bus.

So sorry for the victims and families.

I just heard about this accident on the news. WOW! 12 Dead!

Among those injured were seven Americans and two citizens of Sweden.

Passengers were from two ofships, the Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas.

They were on their way to Chacchoben, about 110 miles (175 kilometers) south of Tulum.

I've never heard of this Mexican port, Mahahual. Is this a new one? Is that Costa Maya?

^ Yes, Mahahual is a primary destination from the relatively new seaport of Costa Maya. DH and I were there on our last western Caribbean cruise. The Port of Costa Maya is a self-contained cruise destination with shops, restaurants, etc. Unless passengers haven't been to the area previously, there's really no need to leave the seaport.

I've never been to Costa Maya. I took a cruise-sponsored bus once from Belize City in Belize to the Xunantunich ruins, a 2 hour trip over the mountains over by the Guatamala border.

The description of the accident by one passenger sounds like he is describing that the bus drifted off the right side edge of the road and then the bus driver "overcompensated" when trying to get the right-side wheels of the bus back onto the road surface.
