Oscar Pistorius: South Africa gears up for its 'trial of the century'

(CNN) -- He was one of South Africa's favorite sons, an amputee track star who defied all the odds and sprinted into the hearts of millions during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She was a staggering beauty with the brains to match, a law graduate and model whose star was on the rise.

A note about sound decibel levels

First I'm no sound engineer but I have run calibrated decibel equipment working as part of a safety crew measuring decibels created by race cars at a race track in Georgia. We had to meet county sound regulations by law.

Decibels only measure the intensity of sound which can come from many sources for many different reasons. The decibel level will be different for a number of reasons.

1. The distance of the source of sound to the distance that same sound is measured or heard. People at different distances will hear the same sound at different decibel levels.

2. The direction the sound is produced from. Someone shouting or yelling toward the north will measure a higher decibel level to those the sound is directed at.

If you stand and measure a 747's decibel level while it comes in for a landing over your head it will measure appox. 115 decibels but it wont sound like a woman screaming.

So I said all that to say I'm not sure where Roux is going with decibel levels. JMO

  • Subway, shouted conversation 90-95
  • Boom box, ATV, motorcycle 96-100
  • School dance 101-105
  • Chainsaw, leaf blower, snowmobile 106-115
  • Sports crowd, rock concert, loud symphony 120-129
  • Stock car races 130
  • Gun shot, siren at 100 feet 140

I hate that Roux ends every question with...."not so".....yikes....it makes the question confusing.

Dr. Stipp saw the light in OP's house on, then heard the screaming.

It's interesting that Mr Johan Stipp yesterday described the two sets of three bangs as almost identical, three bangs.

When Nel asked the witness to describe the second three bangs. He said the second three bangs were right on top of each other bang, bang, bang.

IMO too rapid for bat strikes on a door.

Between the two sets of three bangs Mr Stipp said he heard a woman scream intermingled with a mans voice. Mr Stipp answered Roux when he suggested this was OP screaming, that OP would have to be be screaming in two voices at the same time lol

Dr. Stipp is explaining that everything happened simultaneously. He said it didn't happen in episodes.

He explains that his actions all happened at once.

Dr. Stipp again saying that the female voice was intermingled with the male voice.

Dr. Stipp says shortly after the 2nd time he called security (he says he wasn't able to get through the 1st time) he heard the "help help help".

I missed the timestamp of the calls.

Talking about call where he didn't get through.

R: 'About ten mins later you heard help help help'

S: 'Not sure it was ten mins, but definitely after 2nd shots'

R: Mrs Burger testified she heard bloodcurdling screaming and she was double the distance away - if correct she heard it, you should'

S: 'I was on the phone. Not talking but there was a dialling tone'

R asking again and again why S didn't hear screaming when Burger did.

Dr. Stipp saw the top half of the bathroom window and the left third part of the window he saw the window from top to bottom.

Window -

S: 'I remember seeing more of the window. My viewpoint not the same as photo in court. I saw top part and left lower half.'

S: 'I saw the movement in the right hand side - I gather it's the bathroom window.'

Roux is saying part of window on left was open. It's a three part window?

S: 'It didn't strike me as open.'

Roux gets him to confirm that twice.

Roux talking about the states's version. 'Closed confined space, you would not hear a woman scream' (in toilet)

S: 'I can only discuss what I heard.'

Judge stops them, asks Roux to repeat his question.

Roux insisting that Dr. Stipp could not have heard a woman screaming in the toilet room because the door & the window to the toilet were both closed.

Dr. Stipp: "I can only testify to what I heard."

Dunno why proceedings got stopped. It was interesting earlier, when judge stopped Roux cross examining witness on a statement witness didn't have a copy of.....but then they didn't have one available!
