OMG. How awful. Children and older folks may well be the first ones to be lost to the world. A big truck like that would not have windows and no ventilation -- what a horrible way to die, and those left would be in very bad shape. The temp in that trailer with it being 102F outside, I cannot imagine. Prayers for all of them.

Death toll now 50
Deadliest migrant smuggling on US soil
Nearly 100 people were packing in the trailer
No A/C. No water.
Three people are currently in custody.
Marcelo Ebrard, the secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, said that the deceased include 22 people from Mexico, seven from Guatemala and two from Honduras
Rep. Henry Cuellar said on Twitter that the truck traveled through the Laredo checkpoint.
60 members of SAFD who responded to the scene will undergo critical incident stress debriefing.

Company says truck with dozens of dead people inside was “cloned,” according to report

The truck in San Antonio had the same color and identifying numbers from the federal Department of Transportation and the Texas DOT as a _________ Trucking and Harvesting truck, the Alamo-based* trucking company’s owners said. But the cloned truck does not bear the company’s logo, as the business’ other trucks do.

One of the owners said the company’s truck has not been to San Antonio recently and has been hauling grain from Harlingen to Progreso.

“Our [refrigerated trailer] is sitting right in the yard,” Felipe ________ Jr. told the Express-News. “That one in San Antonio is not our trailer.”

* Alamo-based refers to Alamo, Texas a small town in the Rio Grande Valley about 200 miles from San Antonio.

Someone labeled the truck containing the migrants with the same color and identifying numbers from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Texas DOT as a truck that their company owns.

Truck was possibly parked in the area around noon. (Discovery of bodies was at around 5:50 PM) In WaPo article:

Graphic information about how migrants were attempting to disguise themselves from authorities
In recent arrests, over 70 people have been smuggled in one truck. (Migrants were not harmed, in those but the sheer numbers in the trucks appears to be increasing)

3 arrested in connection with human-smuggling tragedy on San Antonio’s Southwest Side that left 51 dead

Homero Zamorano, 45 after abandoning the vehicle. Zamorano has addresses in Houston and the Rio Grande Valley.

“He was very high on meth"..He was so high, that he had to be hospitalized  (Good grief.......)

He may be arraigned tomorrow (Wednesday) on smuggling charges

Two brothers were arrested on suspicion of possessing firearms while in the country illegally. They were at the house where the truck was registered, not far from where it was found

In other news, they have identified 39 of the 51 victims...(MOO: This is pretty good considering that many migrants who are found deceased do not have any identification)

A city worker heard a cry for help from the abandoned truck before discovering the gruesome scene on Monday, according to San Antonio police chief William McManus.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden called the “tragic loss of life” in Texas“horrifying and heartbreaking” while San Antonio’s mayor Ron Nirenberg called it a “horrific human tragedy”.

Mexico foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed that the nationalities of some of the victims who died inside the triple-digit-degree truck had been identified. The victims include 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and two Hondurans.

Oops...sorry I had the number of ID found wrong up above...sorry
34 victims have been "potentially" identified

Gosh, I still can't believe the driver was so high on meth that he needed to be hospitalized.
I also read late last night that he was still in the hospital.....This is why his arraignment was delayed
Was he so high that he couldn't drive anymore?
Were the armed men with him too?
Apparently there was also a small caravan of SUVs which arrived in the area around noon.
If truck also arrived around noon on Quintana Rd, why didn't someone just let the people out?
Was the guy so high, he didn't know they would die?
Why didn't someone let them out?

MOO: Sounds like a real criminal enterprise he's got going on.
Was he so high on meth because he's been taking trip after trip non-stop?

Adding to the post from a paywall article:
As of Tuesday evening, Bexar County spokesman told USA TODAY there were 34 “potential IDs” among the victims

MOO So maybe the ID is based on ID's that they are carrying? Which sometimes are false ID's.

Only a few counties in Texas have a medical examiner
The fact that they were found in San Antonio increased their chance of being identified. (Bexar County Medical Examiner)

It all started after a call came to 911 Monday night after a nearby worker heard cries for help. They opened the doors to the trailer and found several dead. Those in the trailer were part of a presumed migrant smuggling attempt into the United States.

According to the arrest affidavit, San Antonio Police investigators linked the registration plate on the semi-truck to a home on the Northwest Side. Both were taken into custody after two separate traffic stops.

During the traffic stop, D’Luna-Bilbao told officers of a handgun in the truck's center console. After obtaining a search warrant, officers found numerous handguns and rifles in the home.

D’Luna-Bilbao and D’Luna-Mendez have not been formally charged in the human smuggling case.

In a statement to local media yesterday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said of the 51 victims found on board the vehicle, 22 were from Mexico, 7 from Guatemala, 2 from Honduras and 19 whose nationality remains undetermined.

José Luis Guzmán Vásquez, from San Miguel Huautla, in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, is one of the survivors of the tragedy. His relatives say he worked in construction and the fields back in Oaxaca and decided to come to the US to find work.

"We don't have anything else to weave other than hats, palm and handicrafts. The planting of corn, wheat and beans is what we do in this region and that makes many of our countrymen emigrate and go to the United States," said José's cousin Alejandro Lopez.

Alejandro Miguel Andino Caballero, originally from Honduras, is counted among the victims. He lived with his parents and grandparents in La Vega, Santa Bárbara, Honduras, located roughly 100 miles northwest of the capital of Tegucigalpa.

Sisters Carla and Grisela Carac Tambriz, believed to be in their teens, left their home in Colcajá, Nahualá, Sololá, Guatemala in search of work in the US. Both were found dead in the trailer in San Antonio.

A list of deceased victims identified so far:
  • Alejandro Miguel Andino Caballero (22, Honduras) - died alongside his wife, Margie, and brother, Fernando José, all from Santa Bárbara, Honduras. The trio were heading to Maryland to live with relatives.
  • Margie Tamara Paz Grajera (20, Honduras) - originally from Santa Bárbara, Honduras. She died alongside her husband, Alejandro Miguel. Margie, Alejandro, and Fernando were heading to Maryland where they were going to live with relatives.
  • Fernando José Redondo Caballero (19, Honduras) - died alongside his brother, 22-year-old Alejandro Miguel. Margie, Alejandro, and Fernando were heading to Maryland where they were going to live with relatives.
  • Adela Betulia Ramírez Quezada (28, Honduras) – left her home in Cuyamel, Cortés, Honduras for the US 25 days ago.
  • Carla Carac Tambriz (16, Guatemala) - left her home in the Nahualá municipality in the Sololá department of Guatemala with her sister to find work in the US. Both sisters were found dead in the trailer.
  • Griselda Carac Tambriz (17, Guatemala) - left home with her sister, Carla, to find work in the US. Both sisters were found dead in the trailer.

A huge tragedy caused by politics and drugs, IMO. Horrible.
Every article I have read, the death toll rises.

Migrant Deaths Mourners pay their respects at a makeshift memorial at the site where officials found dozens of people dead in an abandoned semitrailer containing suspected migrants, Wednesday, June 29, 2022, in San Antonio.

While everyone knew the risks, countless people from Cerro Verde had made it safely across the U.S.-Mexico border with the help of smugglers, so it came as a shock, López Hernández said, to learn his cousins and dozens of other migrants were abandoned inside a tractor-trailer sweltering under the Texas sun.

Flores López is now among the missing, his family said, while Vásquez Guzmán is hospitalized in San Antonio. At least 53 people have died, including 27 people from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, seven from Guatemala and two from El Salvador, said Francisco Garduño, chief of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute.

I really Hope that whole criminal enterprise gets taken down...myownopinion Oh, and I wonder why the two brothers aren't being charged? (yet!) Hmmmm
