Ricky Dale Howard, 54, of Nocona, was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday after entering guilty pleas to three counts of unlawfully possessing a firearm the day his trial was scheduled to begin.

A bench trial was set for 9 a.m. for one of the unlawful possession cases, however, the hearing never opened as Howard's attorney Robert Estrada asked to meet with District Attorney Paige Williams and then met with Howard.

Around 11 a.m., the bench trial opened before 97th District Court Judge Jack McGaughey and Howard plead guilty.

Howard has been a person of interest in the disappearance of Caleb Diehl. It was in the midst of questioning and executing search warrants in connection with the missing 18-year-old that officers discovered the guns and an alleged incident of him shooting on a friend's gun range.

The article says his sexual assault charges are not expected to go to trial this year.

Caleb Diehl was last seen running errands for his employer on March 30, 2015, in and around Nocona, Texas. Caleb, 18 at the time, had borrowed a pickup truck from the employer, Ricky Dale Howard, who is also a family friend. The truck mysteriously reappeared just days later, its keys found on their proper hook at the business. Foul play has not been ruled out in the case, and Caleb's cell phone and social media accounts have not been used since he disappeared. Caleb's employer, Howard, was arrested in May of 2015 on an unrelated weapons charge. Officials had found several firearms when he gave them permission to search his properties after Caleb vanished. Then, in December 2015, Howard was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. In January of this year, two more counts were filed after authorities in Montague County say a second victim came forward. A trial date has not yet been set. Officials have said Howard has not been cleared in connection with Caleb's disappearance, but he is just one of several people they have questioned in relation to the case.

Bumping for Caleb. I cannot imagine what his family have gone thru and continue to do so. May there be answers and justice prevail.

Retired officer returns to missing teen's case

Montague County Sheriff Marshall Thomas hopes a “fresh set of eyes” can provide new direction in the disappearance of Caleb Diehl and other cold cases within the county.

Thomas said Monday the first case he wants Benton to examine is the disappearance of Caleb Diehl.

Kevin Benton, retired 30-year law officer, has joined the sheriff’s team as a part-time investigator and coordinator of the crime prevention program. Benton retired from the Wise County Sheriff’s Office in August.
