A Greenville Police Department incident report identified Royal Mullins as the murder suspect in Gray's case. According to that incident report, 13 officers responded to a 911 call on July 30, shortly after 1 a.m., and arrived at the Greenville house where Gray died. The police booked Mullins on a murder charge at 10 a.m., and then released him from jail on a $150,000 bond that afternoon...

But family members of Gray, who was black, have raised questions about the amount of bail set for Mullins, who is white; the pace of the investigation; and the police's treatment of the crime scene. The family members also have complained that law enforcement officials have given them misinformation about the circumstances of Gray's death. They recently learned from the autopsy report that Gray suffered 11 gunshot wounds... Greenville police had told the family initially that Gray had only been shot three times...

Coley said the special prosecutor Sangermano, who did not respond to a call for this story, has told him she has not yet presented evidence to a grand jury. Coley said that Greenville police allowed Mullins and others to return to the crime scene before law enforcement investigators had completed their work.

Curtis Gray Jr. was among the family members expressing their frustration with the case.

“It was clear cut,” he said. “He walked into my dad’s house and shot him.”

Nearly four months after the murder, there seems to be no info released regarding a possible motive or any kind of relationship between the two men. Poking around Facebook, the only hint of a motive I could pick up was that Mullins and Gray may have been romantically involved with the same woman.

Trial is scheduled next week for a Greenville attorney, charged in connection with a 2014 shooting death.

Jury selection is set in the 196th District Court Monday for Royal Lynn Mullins, who has pleaded not guilty involving the death of Curtis “Topper” Gray.

The first day’s testimony revealed that Gray and Mullins were both involved with the same woman at the time, who was celebrating a birthday party at the residence.

Recordings of 911 calls made from the scene indicated Gray was asked to leave the premises, but refused to, and that officers were initially called to the scene in an attempt to remove him, but left without taking action. Another 911 call played for the seven woman, four man jury was from Mullins after he had allegedly shot and killed Gray.

Corporal Lee Dixon testified that he did not take action during the initial call, as the woman who had allegedly been wanting Gray to leave was not at the location at the time and due to the fact that the department’s records indicated Gray lived at the residence...

The jury also were shown photos from the crime scene, which revealed a knife next to Gray’s body.

But former detective Steve Walden said the investigators initially believed the knife was placed there after the shooting, as bloody footprints were found underneath the knife.

UPDATE: Both sides have rested their cases this morning in the trial of Royal Lynn Mullins, charged with one count of murder in connection with the July 30, 2014 shooting death of Curtis "Topper" Gray. Mullins did not take the stand during the trial. Closing arguments are expected later today, after which the jury in the 196th District Court would begin deliberations on guilt/innocence.

The defense was presenting its case Monday during the trial of Royal Lynn Mullins, charged with murder in the death of Curtis “Topper” Gray.

Jurors listened to testimony from Janice Stanley, whose home is where the fatal shooting occurred early on the morning of July 30, 2014. Although Stanley contradicted statements she allegedly gave investigators following the incident regarding Mullins’ role, she did insist Mullins saved her life when he shot and killed Gray.

A jury in the 196th District Court deliberated for about an hour before returning with the guilty verdict against Royal Lynn Mullins, involving the death of Curtis “Topper” Gray. A sentencing hearing was recessed until Wednesday morning to allow the panel to continue deliberations on the punishment Mullins, 63, will receive.

A jury sentenced Royal Lynn Mullins to a lengthy term in prison for the murder of Curtis Wayne “Topper” Gray.

After meeting for about two hours Wednesday morning to consider punishment, the jurors in the 196th District Court handed down a 60-year sentence for Mullins in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division. The panel, which had issued the guilty verdict Tuesday afternoon, also fined Mullins $10,000.
