TX - Driverless TESLA crashes and burns, 2 passengers die, Houston, Apr 2021

Tesla CEO Elon Musk defends Autopilot after deadly Model S Texas crash

“One of Tesla's engineering executives, Lars Moravy, said Monday that Tesla had examined the vehicle involved in the Texas crash and was unable to immediately analyze all of the data. But the car's steering wheel was "deformed" and the seat belts were unbuckled, he said.

Tesla's findings suggest a "likelihood that someone was in the driver's seat at the time of the crash," Moravy said.”

I just can’t believe that any amount of intelligent programming can ever match the brain for ability to assess risk and interpret or anticipate human behaviour. Humanity itself is probably at risk if they ever do figure out how to create programmes that can! What a horrible accident.
@Beans bbm Not saying this facetiously, but after watching vids on reddit.com sub-forums like Idiots in Cars,* I think some human brains can ignore risk in a way that Int. Prog. or A.I. cannot begin to process.
At least I cannot understand.

And yes, agreeing w you, horrible.

‘The car exploded’: 911 calls reveal chilling details of what neighbors saw, heard after fiery Tesla crash near The Woodlands

While Pct 4 Constable Mark Hermann previously said there was likely no driver inside the Tesla. However, this has been a source of debate. On Tesla’s earnings call, Tesla officials said their data shows there likely was one.

A representative of the company continued the answer by saying Tesla had conducted a study with authorities over the past week to determine what led to the crash.

Tesla Wording. Weaseling or just Precise?
"A representative of the company.... 'What we have learned from that effort was that auto-steer did not and could not engage on the road condition, as it was designed,” the spokesman said.' "*

As it was designed?

Does ^ phrasing suggest - someone
(Tesla owner or driver or passenger or ?) took actions to override the safety features which would normally prevent the auto-steer from engaging? IDK, maybe.

* Tesla: Someone was likely in driver’s seat of car that crashed near The Woodlands, killing 2 people Ap. 27

JMO, this needs to be fully regulated and taken off public roads until it's ready. Our streets and highways aren't laboratories or test tracks for some company's undeveloped prototype. Keep it on the test track until its ready, like all the other auto manufacturers were required to do during R&D.

Owner seen on video getting in driver's seat before deadly Tesla crash in Spring, NTSB report says
The report also says that the vehicle traveled around 550 feet before leaving the road and eventually hitting a tree.

According to the report, footage shows Dr. Varner getting in the driver’s seat and Talbot getting into the passenger seat. The car goes about 550 feet before leaving the road on a curve, driving over the curb, hitting a drainage culvert, manhole and finally a tree.

The NTSB says the crash damaged the car’s lithium-ion battery, which started the fire. The console module that tracks speed acceleration, seatbelt and airbag use was damaged in the fire, but was taken to the NTSB lab to be looked at.

The NTSB says the car did have Autopilot, but needs both the Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer features engaged to work. During the NTSB's re-enactment, they weren't able to get the Autosteer feature to engage.

The day after the wreck, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said that his investigators say no one was in the driver's seat at the point of impact.
