Trial started 4/2/19 & ended 4/26/19. 7 women & 5 men on jury with 1 woman alternate (Juror #12 excused 4/5/19). 4/26/19: after 20 hours of deliberations verdict was 8 Guilty & 4 Not guilty. Judge declares mistrial.
Re-trial was set to begin on 1/4/22 was reset to 2/21/22 but continued, no further dates.

AJ Armstrong, accused of killing parents at 16 years old, faces trial in October

Now after years of delays, his retrial date has once again been set. One of AJ's attorneys, Rick DeToto, told Eyewitness News the retrial will likely last longer than the first trial. Attorneys expect jury selection alone to take at least three days.

If he would be found guilty, A.J. could face spending the rest of his life in prison.

I have always been dubious about this case, and AJ’s attorneys are still offering up their theory that his brother was the perpetrator.

During his first trial in late March 2019, A.J.'s attorneys tried to pin the murders on his older brother, who had moved out of the family home just before their parents' deaths.

After years of delays, the capital murder trial into whether Antonio Armstrong Jr. in 2016 killed his parents at their Bellaire-area home will start for a second time.

Armstrong took notes and flipped through documents Monday afternoon as Judge Kelli Johnson quizzed about 120 jurors on their ability to remain unbiased. About 16 percent of the panel expressed having prior knowledge of the allegations from news reports when the judge asked about their familiarity with the case.

Many prospective jurors warned of weddings, surgeries and the financial burden of serving as a juror. A criminal defense attorney identified himself to Johnson as knowing at least one of the lawyers on either side of Armstrong’s case. Participating as a juror would hinder his ability to prepare for an unrelated capital murder trial in Liberty County, he said. Regardless, the court asked him to return Thursday.

A second panel of jurors will gather Wednesday to undergo similar questions, with lawyers expected to pick 16 jurors, including alternates, from either of the groups to hear evidence in the case. Opening statements are expected to start Oct. 11 and last through the first week of November.
