San Antonio Police have charged Ernesto Esquival-Garcia, left, with murder, arson, and abuse in connection with the death of Jared Vargas, right. (Bexar County Jail, San Antonio Police Department)

Firefighters responding to a blaze in a San Antonio, Texas, apartment found the burned remains of a 20-year-old man who had been missing for three days, authorities said Monday.

A medical examiner’s office identified the body as that of Jared Vargas, the San Antonio Express News reported.

An investigation led authorities to charge Ernesto Esquivel-Garcia, 20, a co-worker of Vargas', in connection with the death.

The suspect, who was reportedly a former co-worker of the dead man, may be living in the U.S. illegally and is being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, San Antonio's Fox 29 reported.

Tributes to Jared Vargas, the 20-year-old San Antonio student found dead in a North Side apartment after he had been missing for three days, began to flow on social media after he was positively identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday.

Friends took to Twitter to post heartfelt memorials to their slain friend, describing him as a loving, generous spirit with an uncanny ability to bring people together.

"Jared was very, very affable, very sociable, very outgoing," Gene Vargas, Jared's father, told mySA.com. "He had lots of dreams, a very ambitious individual. He was a loving person. His circle of friends was large. He was well liked. He was an all-around great character."

Vargas, a student at Northwest Vista College with plans to study cybersecurity at UTSA, went missing Saturday after leaving work at Bowl & Barrel at The Rim. Firefighters discovered his burned body Monday in an apartment in the 7900 block of Jones Maltsberger Road while responding to a fire.

Deeply saddens me to hear of this- especially so horrific.

Thank goodness they have identified and charged this person.

May strength and comfort hold this young man's family close during this unbelievably tragic time.

The 20-year-old accused of killing a man and burning his body in a vacant North Side apartment complex Monday night may have been living in the country illegally, according to ICE officials.

ICE spokeswoman Nina Pruneda said the agency placed a detainer on Ernesto Esquivel-Garcia, meaning his immigration status is in question.

Esquivel-Garcia is charged with murder, arson and abuse of a corpse in connection with the discovery of the badly burned body Monday evening inside a unit at the Veranda Apartments in the 7900 block of Jones Maltsberger Road.

According to neighbors, Esquivel-Garcia lived in the apartment where the corpse was located.

Online court records show Esquivel-Garcia was charged with obstructing a highway - intoxication and criminal mischief in March 2017. It's unclear why an ICE detainer wasn't placed on Esquivel-Garcia then.
