DNA tests match ‘Estrellita’ to missing Dallas girl

Half of a missing persons mystery was solved Tuesday when Dallas police announced that a little girl called Estrellita is 9-month-old Dafne Morales.

Relatives reported Dafne and her mother, Norma Morales, missing from the Dallas area on Feb. 24.

The infant was found on the doorsteps of a Matamoros home early on Feb. 25, with a baby carriage, blanket, baby food and juice and a cold.

DNA tests have confirmed the child, that had been in care of Mexican social workers, is the missing infant but have few clues about her mother’s fate.

The girl will likely be turned over to relatives in Mexico.

Norma Morales, 32, remains missing, Dallas police spokesman Gil Cerda said. Police are not ruling out foul play in the investigation.

“Her mother is a very responsible individual,” Cerda said. “She would not just leave her daughter.”

Of course she wouldn't leave her daughter like that unless she was forced to.
Someone who cared about that baby left her there though where she would be sure to be found. She wasn't just left in a box and wrapped in a blanket so there is a message there. I wonder if someone forced her to leave the baby there because he didn't want to be bothered with a baby any longer? I just hope the mom is still alive and that she is found soon. That little baby girl needs her mama.

Authorities believe a body found floating in the Rio Grande last week might be Norma Morales. The Cameron County Sheriff's Department has said that preliminary autopsy results show no sign of trauma on the woman's body, but deputies found a brick tied to her left leg with a rope.

"She was dead by the time she was thrown in the river," Sheriff Omar Lucio said in Wednesday's editions of The Brownsville Herald. "We don't know exactly what was the cause of death."
The woman, believed to have been in her 20s or 30s, was thrown into the river around April 8 and was found on Friday, Lucio said.
Deputies contacted Dallas police after finding the body, believing it might be that of Norma Morales. ..............snippet

If the body is Norma's, then where was she for 2 weeks between Feb. 24 and April 8th?

She and her baby were reported missing on the 24th, the baby was found on the 25th, and the article says her body was thrown into the river around the 8th. I really hope Norma wasn't kept alive and harmed during those two weeks.

Baby Dafne is now with her grandparents:
Mexico's child protective services turned the girl over to Nicolas Morales and Gloria Licona in Matamoros, where they traveled to late last week from their home in Pachuca in the Mexican state of Hidalgo, according to the Mexican government.

Whereabouts of Baby Dafne’s mother remain unknown

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that the body of a woman found on the banks of the Rio Grande last month is not Norma Morales’.

U.S. Border Patrol agents reported spotting the badly decomposed body of a woman believed to be in her 20s or 30s on April 13 near Oklahoma Road.

She was found wearing a small blouse, shorts and had a brick tied to her left leg with a rope.

At that time, authorities believed the body could be Morales, 32, mother of Dafne Morales.

On Wednesday, Chief Deputy Gus Reyna said that about two weeks ago his department learned the woman was not Morales through DNA testing.

The woman’s body remains at the morgue at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, he said, adding that since the finding no one has inquired about the body.

Wednesday afternoon, Dallas police spokeswoman Donna Hernandez, said Morales’ whereabouts are still unknown and that the case remains open and under investigation.
