Might need to change the header on this one. Austin, TX is in Travis County. Austin County is considerably east of the city of Austin.

On Sunday, Austin detectives were called in to investigate suspicious circumstances in the disappearance of Macias by her ex-boyfriend, 40-year-old JJW.

    [...]

APD Missing Persons was notified that Jefferson County, Texas officers were involved in a pursuit of a 2008 Maroon Honda Accord on Monday, a vehicle owned by JJW.

The pursuit lasted over an hour going from Beaumont, Orange County and into Louisiana, ending with Wingwood crashing his vehicle, authorities say. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office took Wingwood into custody.

On Tuesday, APD Missing Persons traveled to Louisiana to interview JJW. Detectives say Wingwood provided information leading the investigation to the Rodeway Inn at 6201 E US 290 in Austin.

Detectives found the body of a Hispanic woman with obvious trauma at the hotel and “tentatively believe it’s the body of San Juana Macias.

Missing Austin Woman Found Dead In Motel: Police

Police also cited comments Wingwood made to family members that led them to believe Macias' life was in imminent danger and Wingwood was fleeing the state to avoid apprehension by law enforcement, police said in a press advisory.

    [...]

The long pursuit continued into Beaumont, Orange County and Westlake, Louisiana for more than one hour, at which point Wingwood collided with two law enforcement vehicles and caused a major crash between a passenger car and an 18-wheeler, police said. The pursuit ended with Wingwood crashing his vehicle, shortly after he was taken into custody by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being arraigned.

Jaime Jerome Wingwood, 40, is charged with two second-degree felonies of tampering with a corpse and aggravated assault for the death of San Juana Macias, who was reported missing July 7. He has not been charged with murder, but in the arrest affidavit police say he confessed to killing her.

Macias’ body was found July 9 in a room at the Roadway Inn and Suites located at 1601 East Highway 290. Police say they found her wrapped in a fitted bed sheet inside the bed.

“The bed frame was constructed in a manner that created a box on the top of which the box spring and mattress sat on,” police said in the arrest affidavit. “Under the box spring and mattress was a void created by the frame of the box and is where the victim was located.”

During questioning, police say Wingwood confessed to killing Macias at the hotel and leaving her body there. Hotel staff had done a routine cleaning of the room prior to police arriving. Police searched the hotel room but did not find Macias’ body.

Officers continued to interrogate Wingwood, but he maintained he never moved Macias’ body, which surveillance footage seemed to corroborate.

Upon further questioning, police say Wingwood whispered to one of the detectives that officers needed to “look under the mattress in the ‘box.'”

Police believe Macias was beaten to death with an iron from the room. Her head and face showed signs of trauma, and the custodian had previously told police a fitted sheet and blanket and an iron were missing from the room.

Gory details in affidavit reveal woman’s beaten body was found in hotel bed frame

I find it surprising that the maids didn't notice, but absolutely shocking that LE didn't find her! I think from now on, LE should be instructed to look under the box springs!

This was an absolutely gruesome and evil murder, and I hope her killer receives a long sentence.
