Accused Murderer Of Hearing-Impaired Cinco Ranch High Senior Arraigned In Houston Courtroom

New details in the murder of 19-year-old Spencer Vogt emerged today as the Cinco Ranch High School senior’s accused killer, Lee Carl Banks, III, appeared in a Houston courtroom to formally hear the charges against him.

Banks, also 19, was arraigned this morning before District Judge Michael McSpadden. He is charged with capital murder for allegedly killing Vogt and dumping his body, wrapped in a blue tarp, in a ditch in south Houston.
According to law enforcement sources, Banks shot Vogt twice in the head.

During the court hearing, Assistant District Attorney Connie Spence told the court Banks killed Vogt because he wanted Vogt’s car. Banks was arrested by police in Cairo, Ga. after he was stopped driving the victim’s 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The two men reportedly became acquainted online in a gay chat room and later met in person. The killing allegedly took place at Banks’ home in the 3300 block of Yellowstone, just east of the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

One friend of Vogt’s described the meeting as a “hook-up” and said he warned the hearing-impaired Cinco Ranch High School senior against meeting anyone from the chat room.

Banks was ordered held without bail.

Lee Carl Banks, a 19-year-old facing jail time for assault, wanted to start a new life in Atlanta. All he needed was a hot car and a little money to get there.

Jurors Friday decided to sentence him to life in prison for shooting Spenser Vogt, a 19-year-old from Katy, for his black two-door convertible, his rings and the $20 in his wallet...

In 2008, he pleaded guilty to assaulting a former boyfriend in exchange for a year of probation. Because he had failed to comply with the terms, including missing a class on domestic violence, his probation was scheduled to be revoked March 30, 2009. He would have gone back to jail, Spence said. That day, police in Cairo, Ga., pulled Banks over on his way to Atlanta. Vogt and his car had been missing for three days.
