Twelve-year-old girl dies after assault in Liverpool city centre

“A 12-year-old girl has died after being assaulted in Liverpool city centre following an altercation.

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of Ava White. She was killed when out with friends on Thursday night during the annual switch-on of the Christmas tree lights on Church Street.

Four males – one aged 13, two aged 14 and one aged 15, all from the Toxteth area of Liverpool – have been arrested on suspicion of murder, Merseyside police said.

Officers were called at approximately 8.39pm to reports of an assault.

On arrival they discovered Ava collapsed on the ground and a member of the public who witnessed the incident was giving first aid. Paramedics attended and Ava was taken to Alder Hey children’s hospital, where she died a short time later.”

Dreadful. What's with all these kids carrying knives?

I think there are two problems here, and imo they both affect adults as well as kids (of course I have the parking dispute murder in Taunton fresh in my mind as I say this). One is that increasingly people are leaving the house carrying weapons of one sort or another. The other is that increasingly people seem unable to exercise enough impulse control to stop verbal arguments becoming physical assaults. In a way, I'm less surprised about the kids than the adults - how are they to have the maturity to behave differently when in all likelihood their older siblings, parents or parents' friends are their role models.

I think we really need to look at some of the social problems that are feeding into this phenomenon, which imho are more to do with feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness and low social status than about the knives themselves. Pretty much everyone has sharp kitchen knives at their disposal; the problem is what leads people to think their status or power over others will be enhanced by carrying them, making threats with them and ultimately using them on each other.

This is awful though. A bunch of kids in the city centre to watch the Christmas lights going on and a 12yo girl ends up in the mortuary instead - plus four more young lives down the toilet. What a waste.

Merseyside Police said a 16-year-old was released on bail, a 14-year-old was released under investigation and no further action was taken against a 13-year-old.

Will the 14- and 16-year-old boys be testifying in each other's trials? The 13-year-old? I wonder how many versions of what happened have been told.

Ava and a friend approached the boys and asked them to stop filming and delete the footage, before being joined by more of her friends, including two older boys.
The jury was told the older boys left but the defendant and his friends then "jeered" at Ava, causing her to run towards them.
A 20-second clip showing the stabbing in School Lane was played to the court, which showed Ava approach the defendant.

Ms Newell said Ava had approached the defendant but did not "inflict any violence upon him greater than a push, nor did she produce or have any weapon".
She said the boy's reaction was not to turn and run or to slap or punch her.
Ms Newell told the court: "Instead it was to thrust a knife into the neck of this unarmed child with what the pathologist was to determine was moderate force, the force of a firm punch."
She said the defendant now claimed he was acting in self-defence, fearing he would be assaulted or stabbed.
