That's interesting.

From the same article:

"Courtroom 3 had around a dozen reporters sitting at the back of the court as well as around six members of the public - believed to be family of Ackland.

In the neighbouring courtroom, watching the hearing via a video link, around 20 friends and family of Bobbi-Anne McLeod sat in the public gallery. Two uniformed police officers and two detectives involved in the investigation were also present along with a number of legal assistants."

Judge Linford also confirmed that the hearing would be in Plymouth.

[...]

Cody Ackland, 24, did not enter a plea to the single charge of murder during a plea and trial preparation hearing at Plymouth Crown Court on Wednesday.

The defendant spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during the hearing.

[...]

Before Ackland was produced from the cells, Judge Robert Linford had warned those sitting in the public gallery to remain quiet or they would be removed.

He said: "These cases are understandably fraught with emotion and feelings running high and that is to be expected, but this is a court of law and these proceedings must be conducted with that fact well in mind."

Ray Tully QC, defending, had applied for Ackland not to be arraigned as he was waiting on the outcome of further psychiatric assessments.

A further case management hearing will take place on a date to be fixed and Ackland, of Radcliffe Close, Southway, Plymouth, was remanded in custody.

Mr Justice Garnham will preside over the trial, which will begin on 3 May and last up to 10 days.

Before adjourning proceedings, Judge Linford thanked the members of the public for "conducting themselves in a quiet and orderly way".

So does this sound like he’s about to plead not guilty? Or does the psychiatric tests mean he’s going guilty? I’m confused.

Even if he has a legitimate defence of diminished responsibility (DR), and the court accepts this, he would still be found 'guilty' of the crime; the DR then becomes relevant at sentencing.

My first thought when I saw the mention of the psychiatric report was that he is going to plead guilty to manslaughter; then it will be down to whether or not that plea will be accepted. My feeling is that it will not be and the murder trial will proceed, but of course there must be an awful lot of information behind the scenes we don’t know at this stage.

My thoughts are very much with Bobbi-Anne’s family and friends who desperately want justice done for her. Whatever the outcome it is devastating for them!

My thoughts are also very much MOO!

From the Crown Prosecution Service website:

Homicide: Murder and Manslaughter | The Crown Prosecution Service

“The public interest in prosecuting homicide cases is high as the harm caused will inevitably be of the utmost seriousness. Other homicide chapters above set out specific public interest factors. Subject to sufficiency of evidence, a prosecution is almost certainly required, even in cases such as 'mercy killing' of a sick relative...

...There should be agreement between the police, CPS and counsel and consultation with the family of the victim before accepting a plea to manslaughter”

Bobbi-Anne McLeod: Musician Cody Ackland admits murdering 18-year-old student

“Bobbi-Anne McLeod was last seen at a bus stop in Plymouth in November while on her way to meet friends. Her body was discovered three days later near a beach.

A musician has pleaded guilty to the murder of teenager Bobbi-Anne McLeod.

The 18-year-old went missing on the evening of 20 November and was last seen at a bus stop in Plymouth.

She was due to travel to the city centre to meet friends but never arrived.

Three days later, her body was discovered near Bovisard Beach - about seven miles away from her home.

Cody Ackland appeared at Plymouth Crown Court on Tuesday morning to enter his plea.

The 24-year-old was the lead guitarist in a local indie band, Rakuda, who released their first EP in August last year.

After Ackland's arrest, the band announced it would be taking a break and hoped to reform later this year.”

Any hint of a motive yet?

Judge Robert Linford tells Ackland he will receive a whole life sentence. The minimum term is yet to be decided. Sentencing will take place on May 19th.

I think that reporter’s tweet is slightly wrong. A “whole life” sentence would mean CA will never be released. CA has been advised he will of course get the standard sentence for murder which is life imprisonment, and the minimum term is yet to be determined. I wouldn’t expect a whole life sentence for a single murder with a guilty plea unless there are other factors but it has happened before where those factors are striking (Jamie Reynolds, Wayne Couzens, for example).
