Defence makes a despairing observation as he offers mitigation
Mr Tully notes that on the night in question, amongst the mundane of everyday life in the McLeod home, Bobbi-Anne spent time looking for her shoes. He noted that "if she had found those shoes" then it was inevitable to all who know the case, that Bobbi-Anne "would have caught an earlier bus".

He notes that "on such sliding doors... many lives change. Her life extinguished. Her family's lives thrown into utter chaos."

Opportunist
Mr Tully said our knowledge of what happened that evening comes only from one source – Cody Ackland. He added that although there is no dispute about Ackland's internet searches, when he left home that night he hadn't planned to go out and commit a murder and 'the dots forming in his mind hadn't yet been connected'. Mr Tully said the decision to do what he did was taken at the last minute when the opportunity of Bobbi-Anne at the bus stop presented itself.

@Legally Bland Thank you so much for bringing all the posts related to Bobbi Anne's murder. So horrific and sad.

As for Ackland...clearly a sick sick individual. But I don't think he did this before, since he confessed very quickly. Seasoned serial killers don't do that. It would be interesting to know if any of his ex girlfriends have reported violent relationships with him though.

Prayers for her family. I cannot imagine what they are going through.

Ackland's background
Psychiatric reports state Ackland wasn't suffering mental illness at the time of the killing, Mr Tully saying that was why he pleaded guilty to murder, but that there were issues from the report that had something of a role to play in his culpability.

From an early age Ackland was said to have had special educational needs because of developmental issues causing him to struggle with his schooling. Mr Tully said Ackland was bullied and that by aged nine he was presenting as someone saying his life was worthless and who was having suidical thoughts. Male figures in his life were also said to have not provided any help or guidance.

Ackland suffered depression and anxiety from a young age that spread into both his school and home life. Mr Tully said: "He grew up feeling something other - something different - feeling excluded in a number of ways. He felt a loner."

Mr Tully added that Ackland grew up feeing angry at the world and his own inability to get on in the world.

Mr Tully said: "He views what he has done as a cumination of everything that has gone on in his life and his childhood. We're dealing with the aftershocks of things that have been rumbling on undetected."

Ackland was said to have been self-absorbed but in a self-loathing and not narcissistic way. Mr Tully stated further that Ackland hated the world and just wanted to be normal.

Ackland handing himself in was a "significant feature of the case"

Mr Tully said that if Ackland had not admitted what he did the investigation would have presented challenges for even the most skilled of investigators. He said that Bobbi-Anne's body would likely have been found but there was a possibility Ackland - who had no previous convictions and was not on any police radar - may have got away with murder.

Judge Robert Linford retires to consider sentence

He will sentence Ackland at 1pm.
Ackland will be given a life sentence, it's now up to Judge Linford to decide how many years he must serve before eligibile for parole.

Rumours were rife and I actually thought no way was a hammer used on poor Bobbi at the bus stop because there would be blood surely, this is going to sound horrible but the other rumours about sexual stuff and removing body parts, I'm so glad that they were just disgusting rumours.
For such a little darling, Bobbie was a fighter <3

"Utter savagery"

He said: "Bobbi-Anne was just 18 when on November 20 you encountered her at bus stop in Leigham area. She had the whole of her life in front of her until it was brutally and savagely snuffed out by you. She was a much-loved daughter and sister and a well liked friend to many. She was the light of the family home, loving, loyal and the best daughter her parents could have. Her family struggle to comprehend a future without her."
Judge Linford went onto describe how evidence disclosed Ackland had "a worrying and distrubring interest in serial killers". He spoke of images on his phone including pictures of bodies, post mortems, serial killers. He said: "I am satisfied your interest in this material went beyong morbib fascination."
He added that Ackland was activiely looking for tools that can be used to kill and dispose of a body and that his search history included evidence of him searching remote and wooded areas on dartmoor.
Judge Linford said he was satisfied Ackland was planning to kill. He added: "But I cannot be satisfied you drove into Plymouth to kill that night but it was only going to be a matter of time."
Judge Linford said the murder was "determined savagery" and that he delivered blows intent on killing.
He said: "You put her into the car unconcious and bleeding heavily. You could have stopped and took her to hospital. You would have been in trouble but not this trouble and Bobbi-Anne could have lived. In the car tried to strange life of her but failed."
Judge Linford then spoke of how Ackland continued the attack at Dartmoor, saying that his account of Bobbi-Anne's fight to live was "chilling".
He said that so widespread was the search for Bobbi-Anne that not a single person in Plymouth would have been unaware of her disappearance.

Bobbi-Anne would have likely survived for an hour and a half

Judge Linford said that Bobbi-Anne probably lived for an hour and a half after the initial attack.
He then recounted Ackland's next day or two, including a night out drinking with friends, going to the cinema and band practice.
The psychiatric report was described as "distrurbing reading" and spoke of how the murder has rid Ackland of his feelings of depression.

From the above: "The psychiatric report was described as "disturbing reading" and he spoke of how the murder had rid Ackland of his feelings of depression."

What this says to me is that if CA hadn't handed himself in, and had got away with Bobbi-Anne's murder, he would have done it again, and regularly. Perhaps it was his recognition of this that induced him to hand himself in, not that we'll probably ever know or understand for sure. In my opinion, he will be seen as amenable to rehabilitation though. I appreciate many will disagree.

Four attempts to kill

Judge Linford said there was substantial planning by Ackland over committing murder in general.
He said: "You were quite clearly planning murder and did murder."
"There were effectively four attempts to kill her," Judge Linford explaining they were the initial attack at the bus stop, Ackland trying to strangle Bobbi-Anne in his car, attacking her again with the hammer on the moor and describing on her throat.
He added: "This was a prolonged, savage and merciless attack. It caused outrage and fear in this part of country and rightly so. Utterly motiveless."

Sentence passed

Judge Linford sentenced Ackland to life in prison, with a minimum term of 31 years time less served already.
He added that there is a strong possibility Ackland will never be released.
Judge Linford thanked Bobbi-Anne's family and friends and said he didn't know how they contained themselves.
There were calls of murderer and other profanities as Ackland was taken from the dock.
