''(CNN) -- British Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson is in critical condition after being shot in the head in London, her political party said on Sunday.

"It is with great sadness that we inform you that our own Sasha Johnson has been brutally attacked and sustained a gunshot wound to her head," the Taking the Initiative Party (TTIP) said in a statement. "She is currently in intensive care and in a critical condition."

The party said the attack happened "following numerous death threats as a result of her activism."

London's Metropolitan Police responded to reports of gunfire in southeast London about 3 a.m. local time Sunday morning, it said in a statement.

Police said paramedics transported a 27-year-old woman with gunshot wounds to a south London hospital, and that the incident appeared to have happened near a house party in Southwark.

The police statement said that at this early stage of investigation there was no evidence to suggest a targeted attack or that the woman "had received any credible threats against her prior to this incident."

''Johnson rose to prominence last year during the Black Lives Matter protests, as a leader of the TTIP, which has been called "Britain's first Black-led political party."
She is a mother of three, and also works to deliver food and groceries to families in need, according to the party, which called her "a strong, powerful voice for our people and our community" in its Sunday statement.
Black Lives Matter UK will host a vigil for Johnson on Monday afternoon outside Kings' College Hospital in south London.
The organization said it is holding the event to "show support for her recovery and take a stand against senseless violence." It asked people to "please share and show up to support if you can."
In a separate tweet Black Lives Matter UK hailed Johnson as a "young mother and fearless political campaigner who was at the forefront of many BLM protests last summer."
Several British lawmakers paid tribute to the dedicated activist in the wake of the shooting.
"Whoever carried out this dreadful shooting of Sasha Johnson needs to be caught quickly. Give any info you have to @MPSSouthwark. Reported death threats will need to be investigated," wrote Harriet Harman, a Labour Member of Parliament for Camberwell and Peckham, who also wished Johnson a "full recovery."

''Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson was shot in a garden after "four black males dressed in dark clothing discharged a firearm", police have said.

The mother of two remains in hospital after she was hit in the head by a stray bullet at a party in south London.

Scotland Yard stressed that her involvement with the anti-racism movement is not believed to be linked.

In a statement, the Met Police confirmed that Ms Johnson had been at a house party in Consort Road when four men broke into the garden through a side gate.

A fight ensued where a man in his 20s suffered a knife wound. During the fight, a gun was fired, injuring Ms Johnson.''

''Ms Johnson's friend Imarn Ayton told BBC News that the young mother has successfully undergone surgery and her parents are with her in hospital.''

Five arrested after shooting of Sasha Johnson in Peckham

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the shooting of the activist Sasha Johnson in Peckham, south London, on Sunday.

The Met police said officers based in Southwark and Lambeth stopped a 17-year-old on Tuesday and arrested him on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Their investigation led them to an address in Peckham where three more males – an 18-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 28-year-old – were all arrested on suspicion of affray and possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

A fifth male, aged 25, was arrested on suspicion of affray and failing to stop for police later on Tuesday after a police pursuit of a car in Peckham. They were all subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in custody.

The Met said searches continued at two residential addresses in Peckham and in relation to the car that was stopped.

The early reports referred to a 'stray bullet' and that SJ was not the intended target. Now I see the police refer to the crime as attempted murder.

I'd be interested to hear what people read into this. To me it infers there was an intention to kill which gives only two options: either someone else was the intended target or SJ was.

That being said, if the firearm had been discharged randomly and hit SJ, I'm not sure how the crime would be described. If someone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Attempted murder suggests to me there was an intended target even if it wasn't her. Otherwise perhaps some kind of Firearms Act offence, like possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, plus something that reflected the actual injury that occurred to her. I don't know though, I'm just guessing. How is she doing? Has there been any update?

Everything I'm reading makes it sound like this was a gang-related incident, though. You'd like to think you'd come forward in that situation, but I can't blame people for being too scared to.

ETA: Just to underline that all the evidence is that Sasha was an accidental victim and not affiliated to a gang.
