Anorak has an excellent article on this case as well as similar cases, highlighting the manner in which the search for Charlene Downes has been used by groups like EDL as a means to stir white fears.

    Charlene Detective must quit

A senior detective – who played a key role in the Charlene Downes murder probe – has been told she must resign.

    [snip]

Despite one of Lancashire Police’s biggest ever missing person’s inquiries Charlene, who was 14 when she disappeared in 2003, has never been found.

    [snip]

During the 11-week trial in 2007, Preston Crown Court heard detectives believed they could hear reference to Charlene’s body being put into a mincing machine.

But Mr Reveshi and Mr Albattikhi walked free from court when a jury failed to reach a verdict.

A re-trial was ordered, but the case collapsed on the eve of the hearing after prosecutors withdrew the charges and the judge ordered not guilty verdicts be returned on both defendants.

Wasn't sure if anyone still follows this thread? However there was a recent Panorama (BBC) programme 'The Girl Who Vanished', analysing the horribly botched police investigation. It seems there was zero evidence whatsoever against the men the prosecution was brought against. It must be horrible for her family, to not know what happened to her, after all these years [emoji17]

    From February 2017:

A man who admitted sexually abusing two teenage girls has been jailed.

Nigel Lloyd abused the girls, then aged 15, between 2001 and 2003 in Blackpool, Lancashire.

    [...]

The 51-year-old was arrested by police investigating the murder of 14-year-old Charlene Downes. There is no direct link between the cases.

Empty words from the Police really. How many officers are actively working on this after all this time and in the face of huge spending cuts? I'm willing to bet it's zero.

The system as a whole has really let Charlene down and hopefully we can use cases like these to try and learn from the mistakes.

She made walk in visits to the sexual health clinic 13 times in the 2 years leading up to her disappearing. How on earth does that not get reported to social services, especially considering she'd have been only 12 years old in the early visits?

To top it off the police then completely botch the case. Really feel for her parents as they're very unlikely to get justice now.

She's not wrong, think of all that money wasted on trying to find Madeleine McCann. Meanwhile many other families can't even get the police to put a proper search together for their kid.

I've always said if they were from a council estate and on benefits then the McCanns would have been prosecuted years ago. Just another example of how being rich helps you when it comes to the Police.

I just read her mums book. It horrified me how the police initially just treated her as a runaway - I doubt it would have saved her but it could have led to a conviction if they investigated these men a lot earlier.

There wasn't very much about the trial in the book, I'm not sure if that was for legal reasons or if the mum didn't want to go there.

I wouldn't say I "enjoyed" the book because it's such horrid subject matter but I'd certainly recommend it if you're interested in missing persons.
