Reports are coming through that David Amess, the MP for Southend West, has been stabbed while holding a surgery in his constituency. Essex Police say that a man has been arrested. This news will shock parliament and the country: it is a reminder of the risks that MPs run every time they hold a constituency surgery. In 2010, Stephen Timms was attacked with a kitchen knife at his; and five years ago, Jo Cox was shot dead on the way to a constituency surgery in her seat of Batley and Spen.

That there has been no comment of Sir David being taken to hospital and ambulances are still shown outside (Sky News). It gives the sense of the worst outcome.

Counter terrorism officers are liaising with their counterparts in Essex as they try to establish the full picture of this attack” @markwhiteTV tells @GBNews.

“This has not been declared as a terrorist incident as of yet.” He adds.

When it is local it enhances the sense of shock. Is he your MP?

Another attack on democracy, which when one considers it, is an attack on our way of life.

Friday is the day for MP's to be in their constituencies and to hold surgeries with their constituents. I feel that MP's are extremely vulnerable in this environment and that security must be a whole lot tighter.

MP's at their constituency surgery are soft targets for those that want significant publicity.

Yes he was my local MP. He was always out and about visiting places and getting involved.
Awful news that he has died.
