Johan van de Beek is a Dutch journalist, reporting on extremism and terrorism. Thread:

    https://twitter.com/DjoeGio/status/1449993398065274880

As more details emerge about the terrorist attack on Sir David Amess, patterns from previous attacks are emerging. Immediately after the deed, the suspect is labelled a 'lone wolf'. It is emphasised that he was not part of a group. (1)

Then there appear to be 'friends' who saw his radicalisation from close by but apparently did nothing. There is also a crucial role for a well-known hate preacher (in this case Anjem Choudary) who is free to do his thing online. (2)

The suspect does not fit the 'poor and hopeless' profile either but is a student (wants to be a doctor), is popular at school, plays football and goes to the cinema. Until 'the change'. And he has more 'internet contacts'. (3)

The deeper you zoom in on individual cases, the more often you see that many of the usual explanations (exclusion) do not apply or apply only partially. It would be interesting to see what other signals there were in the quadrangle parents-mosque-school-street. (4)

We also have to take into consideration the possibility that the murder of Amess is an example of what French terrorism expert Gilles Kepel calls 'le djihadisme d'atmosphère'. This is fourth-generation terrorism (4G). (5)

I can recommend the articles by @kleisjager on this subject. I fear that this is a development that we in Europe will have to face a lot in the coming years (6)

The perpetrators are not anchored in a pyramid structure of Al-Qaeda or IS but enter into the grip of a toxic atmosphere that justifies violence in the eyes of the actual perpetrator. (7)

The perpetrator usually ends up using a knife and stands up 'out of the blue' when he runs into a 'scandal' (teacher Samuel Paty), has a chance to make a symbolic victim (police officer, priest) or gets caught up in euphoria (Taliban takeover). (8)

Experts fear that the Taliban's "inspiration" is a particular reason for "atmospheric terrorists" (i.e. those not on the lists or "on the radar") to take action. (end)

Interesting, but I'm not sure I agree with some of the underpinning assumptions of the commentator here. The phenomenon of Islamic extremist terrorists emerging from the elite professions, particularly medicine and engineering, has been widely observed and discussed previously; for example:

Strolling down the street, this is Ali Harbi Ali just hours before the killing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess

The terror suspect accused of killing Sir David Amess reportedly posed as a prospective constituent who wanted to talk to the Tory MP about the NHS before knifing him 17 times as CCTV revealed how he sauntered along the street on the morning of the murder having allegedly become obsessed with killing a British lawmaker.

The alleged killer is said to have queued with others waiting to speak to the veteran Conservative last Friday after making an appointment a week earlier.

Amess suspect allegedly made Islamist declaration after attack

Counter-terrorism police are now investigating whether information was in the process of being uploaded to the internet.

On Tuesday, a government source said the incident had been categorised as terrorismbecause of an alleged declaration made by the suspect.

It is not clear whether the alleged declaration was made verbally or online.

But the investigation has been hampered by the lack of any obvious digital footprint for the suspect, with virtually no evidence of any online social media activity.

It is now known the suspect booked an appointment with Sir David the previous week, telling his office he was moving into the area and wished to discuss healthcare issues.

He was subsequently granted an appointment during the three-hour surgery meeting.

But it is thought other MPs may have also been contacted before the suspect secured the slot with Sir David.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Mr Ali spent time on the Channel counter-extremism programme in 2014, around the time he was completing his A-levels.

He was initially referred to Prevent by someone associated with his school and from there was put forward for the Channel scheme.

But he did not spend long on the course and was not considered enough of a threat to be flagged to MI5.
A report out on Wednesday will warn that there is “fundamental mismatch” between the scale of the threat from Islamist extremism and apparent relative lack of attention paid to it by Prevent.

The report found that only 22 per cent of referrals to Prevent were for Islamist radicalisation, and just 30 per cent of those were taken on to Channel deradicalisation programmes.

By contrast, far-right extremists made up 24 per cent of referrals and 43 per cent of those were offered Channel support, making them both more likely to be referred to Channel and taken up as cases.

However, Islamic terrorists accounted for more than 90 per cent of the 43,000 suspects on MI5’s watchlist and the overwhelming majority of recent terror convictions, offenders and killings.

it’s a long article but as paywall I haven’t posted it all . It goes on to cover things about Prevent & a paper about measures etc

    This is absolutely frightening!!!

So my theory of personal grudge flies out of the window.

What is terrifying that he is an educated young man, living in relative comfort with good job prospects as a doctor.

He a doctor??? Doesnt he know the Hippocratic Oath of medics:

David Amess: Murder suspect Ali Harbi Ali accused of plotting to kill MPs since 2019

Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that he has also been charged with preparing acts of terrorism between May 2019 and September this year, with previous plans to kill other members of parliament.

The court heard that he travelled to Sir David’s constituency surgery, at Belfairs Methodist Church, by train from his home in Kentish Town, London.

Mr Ali had made an appointment to see the Conservative politician at 12pm, and allegedly stabbed Sir David after being taken to meet him by an assistant.
