David Amess: Murder suspect Ali Harbi Ali accused of plotting to kill MPs since 2019

Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that he has also been charged with preparing acts of terrorism between May 2019 and September this year, with previous plans to kill other members of parliament.

The court heard that he travelled to Sir David’s constituency surgery, at Belfairs Methodist Church, by train from his home in Kentish Town, London.

Mr Ali had made an appointment to see the Conservative politician at 12pm, and allegedly stabbed Sir David after being taken to meet him by an assistant.

Is it usual for the press to report on other outstanding charges and previous history?

Suspect Ali Harbi Ali, 25, is charged with murdering Sir David Amess | Daily Mail Online

The terror suspect accused of stabbing to death Tory MP Sir David Amess in a church plotted to kill a politician for two years before targeting his victim because he voted for air strikes in Syria, a court heard today.

Ali Harbi Ali, 25, seemed to smile at his legal team as he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of Sir David Amess this afternoon.

He is accused of killing the veteran Conservative MP after queuing with Sir David's Southend West constituents last Friday.

The court heard today that Ali allegedly settled on a plot to kill an MP two years ago, focusing on two MPs other than Sir David. Detectives monitored his Oyster Card travel within London and CCTV footage and discovered that he had conducted reconnaissance on the other two MPs.

He was located outside the home of one politician in March, June and July this year, however he was not convinced the address was correct.

It is understood the plot was inspired by Islamic State and it is alleged he previously focused on two other politicians.

He is said to have carried out reconnaissance at one of their homes, the surgery of another and the Houses of Parliament.

The defendant was not asked to enter pleas to the two charges and was remanded in custody.

Prosecutor James Cable told the court Mr Ali had made a midday appointment to see Sir David at his surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

This thread still hasn't been moved to terrorist attacks.... where it should be.

The devil is in those chilling details. Using an Oyster card to go murder the same politicians who decided about that system. All while studying medicine, to save lives of course.
The names of the other targets may well be out in the open soon. I wish them strength.

Increase in UK's terrorism threat level to 'severe'

The UK’s terrorism threat level has been raised after two attacks in the space of a month.

It is now listed as “severe”, which means an attack is “highly likely”.

The threat level had been lowered to “substantial” in February, meaning an attack is “likely”, after being raised to severe in November last year.

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and MI5 are responsible for setting the international and domestic threat levels respectively, taking into account available intelligence, terrorist intentions and capability as well as potential timescales for attacks.

Speaking to broadcasters, Home Secretary Priti Patel said: “The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, Jtac, are now increasing the United Kingdom’s threat level from substantial to severe.

“And there’s a reason for that, and that reason is because what we saw yesterday is the second incident in a month.”

The car explosion outside a Liverpool hospital on Remembrance Sunday has been declared a terrorist attack by police.

It comes after Conservative MP for Southend West Sir David Amess died during a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on October 15.

Alleged terrorist Ali Harbi Ali, 25, is accused of murdering the MP and has also been charged with preparing acts of terrorism between May 1 2019 and September 28 this year.

Funeral and horse-drawn hearse procession to be held for David Amess | Daily Mail Online

Mourners will pay their respects to Sir David Amess at a funeral service and horse-drawn procession in his Southend West constituency today - as Boris Johnson said the 'murdered' MP will be 'much missed'.

Father-of-five Sir David, who was a devout Catholic, was stabbed to death while holding a constituency surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea on October 15.

His friend and colleague Mark Francois is to deliver a eulogy at Monday's private ecumenical service at St Mary's Church in Prittlewell, and a horse-drawn hearse will carry the casket on a procession through Southend following the 1pm service.

It is due to pause outside Southend's Civic Centre and again outside Sir David's constituency office, Iveagh Hall, before returning to the chapel of rest.

Paying tribute to Sir David, Boris Johnson said the event would help mourners reflect on his 'amazing contribution' to his constituents.

The Prime Minister added: 'He was a guy who campaigned about things he really cared for... He showed what you can achieve as an MP to change lives of people up and down the country and he will be much, much missed.'

Monday's funeral service, led by Reverend Paul Mackay and Rev Monsignor Kevin William Hale, is strictly by invitation only.

Funeral and horse-drawn hearse procession to be held for David Amess | Daily Mail Online

The funeral for Sir David Amess is underway at a church in his beloved Southend today - as Boris Johnson marked the moment by recalling how ministers 'broke down' when he told them of their colleague's death.

Sir David's coffin, draped in a Union flag, was brought to the entrance of St Mary's Church in Prittlewell - a site of worship for more than a thousands years - in a hearse driven at walking pace.

Members of the public who lined the streets outside the church broke into spontaneous applause as the pallbearers made their way along the churchyard on a bright, crisp autumn afternoon.

Pall bearers from Southend Fire Service carried the coffin the short distance to the church porch as they were saluted by members of 3rd Chalkwell Sea Scouts.

Friend and colleague Mark Francois delivered the eulogy, which praised Sir David for being 'the ultimate constituency MP'.

Today, the father of five's 'absolutely broken' family called on Britons to 'set aside their differences and show kindness to all'.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/breaking-man-25-denies-murdering-25752711

A 25-year-old man has denied murdering Tory MP Sir David Amess in an alleged terrorist attack at a surgery for constituents.

Ali Harbi Ali appeared at The Old Bailey today in connection with the 69-year-old Conservative stalwart's death where he pleaded not guilty.

All is accused of preparing acts of terrorism between May 1 2019 and September 28 this year which he also denies.

He was arrested following the fatal attack on Sir David, who had been an MP since 1983.

The popular politician died as a result of his injuries after being stabbed multiple times in a church at Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on October 15.

There’s a live blog on telegraph but it might be paywall for you .

“The defendant started by lying and saying that he had moved to the area from Kentish Town. “He did then tell the truth stating that he had grown up in Croydon and had trained as a radiographer.

“When asked why he had come to the surgery the defendant said that he had come to find out what Sir David could do for the town. This understandably irritated Sir David.

“The surgery was meant for people with particular issues, not general conversation. However, the defendant then said he wanted to talk about foreign affairs.

“He said that he knew Sir David had initially supported the Iraq war but had changed his mind. Sir David looked confused at this.”

Yvonne Eaves and Darren King walked into the church. They saw the defendant.

He was waving a knife around saying “I killed him, I killed him”. The knife was covered in blood.

“The defendant then made clear why he was at the church that day and what his murderous intent was when he said this: ‘I want him dead. I want every Parliament Minister who signed up for the bombing of Syria who agreed to the Iraqi war to die’.”

A bit later, Darren King decided to return, the Old Bailey heard.

The defendant was using a mobile telephone on speaker.

On the other end of the line a woman was screaming at him, “Why have you done it ?”

The defendant replied: “I’ve done it because of Syria. I’ve done it because of the innocent people. I’ve done it because of the bombing. He deserved to die.”

Tom Little QC, turned to the jury and said: “No he didn’t. No, he didn’t. Revenge is not a defence to murder, or any other crime.”

At this point Darren King asked the defendant if he was going to drop the knife.

The defendant replied “No, because I want to be shot” and “I’m going to die. I want to die I want to be a hero.”

Mr Little added: “The defendant plainly assumed and hoped that he would become a martyr to his twisted cause.”

Either just before or just after the murder the defendant sent a long message to various friends and family.

Mr Little QC told the jury: “It is instructive and important. Accompanying the message was a video relating to Raqqa - a town in Syria).

“The reason that I say just before or just after is that the message which had a video attachment was sent to a large number of people.

“He did not have time to compose the message after the attack. It was drafted and saved in advance of his attack ready to go.

“Whether a lack of mobile signal and/or the size of the message delayed its sending is not something you need to worry about too much. Its content speaks for itself and is plainly referrable to the attack.”

The first act of the afternoon session is to hear parts of Ali Harbi Ali’s message.

In it, he apologies to his family and said the killing was in the name of Allah.

He said he would have preferred to ‘hijra’, an Arabic word meaning migration or travel which in the context of jihadism means to travel to Syria to fight alongside terror groups, the jury heard.

But “the obligations on me to take revenge for the blood of Muslims is too great”.

Mr Little QC said: “The message could not be clearer – this was a revenge attack done, he was claiming, in the name of Allah.

“In other words the defendant was taking the law into his own hands. This was the use of serious violence designed to intimidate the public and to influence the Government for the purposes of advancing a religious and ideological cause.

“A murder, we say, therefore done for terrorist purposes.”

The jury were shown bodycam footage of the arrest.

It purported to show an armed officer entering the church with a plain-clothed officer.

As they enter the main hall of the church, they are greeted by a man holding a knife, say the prosecution.

That man, they say, is Ali Harbi Ali.

The officer can be heard shouting: “Drop the knife, mate. Drop the f—ing knife.

“This is only going to go one way, just drop that knife

“You do not want to do this.”

At that stage, the man appears to drop the knife.

One officer rushes to move the knife away from the attacker and then the man is tackled to the ground.

He is then arrested for murder.

Ali was watching the body worn footage intently from the glass walled dock.

The defendant was then taken to the police station, Tom Little told the Old Bailey.

He said: “During the booking in procedure the arresting officers were asked by the custody assistant the standard questions as to whether the arrest was ‘domestic or hate related’.

“Before the police could answer the defendant took the initiative and said ‘Terror’ and ‘Religious’. Let us just think about that for a minute. Terror and religious. In other words it was murder to further religious purposes.

“That itself is terrorism as the defendant well knew.”
