Murder inquiry launched in Calne - Wiltshire Police

We've launched a murder inquiry after the death of a teenager in Calne.

We were called by the ambulance service to a residential address on Springfield Drive, Calne, shortly before 3.15pm yesterday (Friday May 3).

The body of a teenage girl was located in the house and, despite attempts from the ambulance crew, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Following initial enquiries, a 17-year-old male was arrested in the Chippenham area on suspicion of murder yesterday afternoon. He remains in custody at this time.

Superintendent Conway Duncan said: "The thoughts of everyone at Wiltshire Police are with the family of the victim at what must be a devastating time for them.

"They are receiving support from specially trained officers and we will continue to do everything we can to help them come to terms with what has happened.

"This investigation is still in its early stages but I would like to reassure the local community that a robust police response was launched yesterday and will continue in the days to come.

"People in Calne are likely to see a significant police presence in the area over the weekend as our enquiries progress.

"If anyone in the local area has any concerns, please approach one of the officers on patrol or at the cordon and they will be happy to answer your questions if appropriate to do so."

A 17-year-old boy was arrested in the Chippenham area on Friday afternoon, and remains in police custody.

Police said he was known to the girl, and that a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death would be held on Sunday.

A 17-year-old girl killed in Calne, Wiltshire, on Friday has been named as Ellie Gould, a year 12 pupil at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham, Wiltshire Police said.

Police issued a statement on Sunday confirming: "We can confirm that the teenage girl who died in Calne on Friday (May 3) has been formally identified as 17-year-old Ellie Gould."

This is local to me; we have a low rate of violent crime generally and given the age of victim and perpetrator, there is palpable shock.

Wiltshire’s Chief Constable visited the sixth form where Ellie was a student on BH Monday.

The suspect appeared at Salisbury Magistrates Court via video link from Melksham police station on Tuesday and is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court tomorrow (9th May).

Police have confirmed Ellie died of stab wounds.

There is no mention as to whether the defendant entered a plea but he has been remanded in custody.

A 17 year old boy, named as Thomas Griffiths after the Judge lifted reporting restrictions, has pleaded guilty to the murder of Ellie Gould. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 8th November.

He today pleaded guilty to murdering the schoolgirl at Bristol Crown Court and can now be identified after a judge lifted reporting restrictions.

The teen, who was due to stand trial in October, will be sentenced at a later date.
