BIRSTALL, England -- Campaigning in Britain's European Union membership referendum remained suspended Friday as the country absorbed the daylight slaying of lawmaker Jo Cox with shock, and worry that the political fury unleashed by the EU campaign was somehow connected to the killing.
A U.S. civil rights group said the man suspected of the gun and knife attack had links to an American white supremacist organization.
The Southern Poverty Law Center said it has records showing Thomas Mair was a supporter of the National Alliance. The centre said Mair purchased a manual from the group in 1999 that included instructions on how to build a pistol.
Police investigating the killing of MP Jo Cox have said they are prioritising inquiries into the suspect's possible links to right-wing extremism.
The BBC understands Nazi regalia was recovered at suspect Tommy Mair's home.
West Yorkshire Police's temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins said the force was also pursuing the suspect's link to mental health services.
Jo Cox death: Thomas Mair charged with murder of 41-year-old Batley and Spen MP
West Yorkshire Police said Thomas Mair, of Birstall, has been charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.
The 52-year-old will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today.
Thomas Mair, 52, gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" as he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of MP Jo Cox.
With the cuffs removed the hearing continued. Asked his name Mair said only: "My name is death to traitors freedom for Britain". He remained silent when asked his date of birth and address.
A short summary of the events leading to Mrs Cox's death and Mair's subsequent arrest was read to the court by prosecuting council David Cawthorne.
Mair was remanded in custody for a bail hearing at the Old Bailey on Monday, June 20, though it was indicated that no bail application was likely.
Mair refused to give his correct name to the court and remained silent when asked his address and date of birth.
A 77-year-old former miner was named today as the pensioner who was stabbed as he bravely tried to tackle Jo Coxs killer, write Harry Yorke and Martin Evans.
Bernard Kenny was waiting outside Birstall library in his car, after taking his wife there to return a book, when he saw the MP being attacked and got out of his car to help her.
He was stabbed in the abdomen by the gunman, and remains in hospital being treated for serious injuries, which are described as non life threatening.
Why Westminster and not in Yorkshire?
He has now arrived there:

Maybe due to the seriousness of the offense it's been transferred to Westminster - I would guess.

I'm so shocked. This is just a few miles from me, though she wasn't my local MP I knew about her.
