The family of a missing man from Earley have launched a renewed community appeal after the 93 year-old went missing early this week.

Sidney Donald Box from Silverdale Road, Earley was last seen at his home at around 8.20pm on Thursday, January 5.

At the time he was wearing a black dressing gown with a red stripe, a blue jumper and grey trousers.

The family, who are deeply concerned have said that this is out-of-character for the 93-year-old who lives on his own near the Maiden Erleigh Local Nature Reserve.

Sidney’s daughter, Tamsin Thomas said: “We are really really concerned. He is 93, frail and just recently diagnosed with dementia but this is completely out of character.

“We just can’t understand why nobody has picked up on the fact that he is potentially only wearing a dressing gown.

“Maybe he’s got some clothes underneath, but we’re not convinced of that but we definately know that his dressing gown is missing.”

“We’re desperate for people to contact the police if they have any information at all.”

We are continuing our search for missing 93-year-old man, Sidney Box, who has been missing from Reading since the early evening of Thursday.

Sidney was last seen at around 8.20pm on Thursday evening (5/1) in Silverdale Road, Earley.

He is around 5ft 5ins tall with a slim build, and was last seen wearing a black/dark grey dressing gown with thin red stripes running horizontally, and grey trousers.
It is possible he is not wearing shoes.

He is known to walk with a slight limp and goes by the name Donald or Don.

Superintendent Adrian Hall said: “Sidney’s disappearance is completely out of character, and naturally, given the passage of time, the weather conditions, and the clothing he was wearing, we and his family are extremely concerned for his wellbeing.

“Volunteers from the Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue team have been supporting officers and our specialist search team, along with Police Drones in the search.

“Leaflet drops and house to house enquiries have been ongoing in the local area, including Silverdale Road, Kenton Road, Raggleswood Close and we have been conducting a focused and thorough search of the Maiden Erlegh Nature Reserve.

“We have no information that suggests that he would have left the area, although we do know he was a former GWR rail worker.

“Although aware that were rail strikes, I would extend my appeal to anybody that have been in or near to local train stations to please alert us to any possible sightings.

“It remains our top priority to locate Sidney safely, and so I would again appeal to anybody who believes that they have seen him to get in touch with Thames Valley Police urgently, by calling us on 999, quoting reference number 513 of 6th January.

“You can also report sightings via our dedicated missing persons portal, which is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“It may be that Sidney has taken shelter from the weather, and so I would again appeal to anybody in the local area to please check outbuildings and parked cars.

“I would also ask anybody who was in the Wilderness Road area around 8.10am on Friday (6/1) or Ryhill Way around 7pm also on Friday to please check dash-cam and CCTV and get in touch if you think you have any footage or images of Sidney.

“Despite all of our efforts so far, and calls from members of the public, we have had no confirmed sightings of Sidney since his disappearance.

“Sidney’s family are local to Earley, and they continued to be supported by officers.

“We will continue to maximise all available resources into our search for Sidney, and would re-iterate that any sightings or information relating to his disappearance should be given to Thames Valley Police.”

Oh poor Mr Box. What a sad end to a long life.

Officers searching for missing man Sidney Box, aged 93, have sadly located a body this afternoon.

Although formal identification has not yet taken place, we believe this to be Sidney.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported at this very sad time.

The death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Superintendent Andrew Cranidge, LPA Commander for Bracknell & Wokingham, said: “Our search for Sidney has been ongoing for four days, with volunteers from Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue and the local community assisting in our search.

“Very sadly, as a result of these searches, a man’s body was located in a garden in Earley this afternoon.

"I would like to thank everyone who has offered their help in this search over the last four days.
"I know that Sidney's family are extremely grateful to all those who have assisted.

“This is a tragic conclusion to what has been a widespread search and my thoughts and the thoughts of all of us at Thames Valley Police are with Sidney’s family.

“We would ask, on their behalf, that their privacy is respected at what will be an extremely difficult time for them.”

The family of 93-year-old Sidney Box, known to many as Donald or Don, who went missing in Earley and was very sadly, located deceased following a four-day search, last Monday (9/1), have released a statement and tribute.

Issy Briggs, Sidney’s granddaughter, said: “My family and myself wanted to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those that supported us in the search for my grandfather (Papa) over four days earlier this month.

“The outcome was not what any of our family, friends, or the community wanted to find out, but it’s some form of closure.

“The amount of aid we received has been far-reaching, personal and practical.

“We were, and still are, feeling overwhelmed by the amount of people and businesses that took the time to help.

“You were all part of the reason we stayed hopeful and positive over the four days, and have proved just how important community is.

“We know that some individuals and families knew my Papa and Nana from the many years they have lived in Earley.

“He was the most kind, selfless and non-judgmental person, and we’re happy that so many people were able to meet and know just how much of a special person Donald Box was.

“We would ask, if you see any posters on your journeys out and about, please could you take them down for us.

“We are going to do our best to remember the ones we put up, but would really appreciate it if people could keep an eye.

“Thank you again.”
