UK UK - STEPHEN PORT, Suspected SK of Male Victims, London

Here are some more possible victims, for a start! It wouldn't surprise me if LE just see this kind of death and think - oh, another gay drug-scene death - and don't investigate thoroughly to rule out foul play.

Scotland Yard is under fire now for not taking seriously concerns that a serial killer was preying on men in the gay community.

Met Police told about serial killer on the loose in east London before they launched inquiry
PAUL PEACHEY Crime Correspondent
Tuesday 20 October 2015

The Metropolitan Police was told about concerns within the gay community about a serial killer on the loose in east London ten months before the force launched a murder inquiry into the deaths of four young men, it can be revealed.

Website PinkNews contacted Scotland Yard after being alerted by a friend of one of the victims in December last year but was told there was “nothing suspicious” about the deaths of three young men in four months, all found in a small area of Barking.

PROBE INTO WHAT TOOK THE POLICE SO LONG TO INVESTIGATE THE DEATHS
Scotland Yard is being investigated by the police watchdog over the length of time it took to investigate links between the four deaths.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission will examine claims that the force was told about concerns over the deaths ten months before it launched a murder inquiry.

PinkNews, a gay website, claims it contacted the Met after three men were found dead in similar circumstances within half a mile of each other. Police were approached by editor Nick Duffy at the start of the year who expressed his concerns about the cases.

Mr Duffy had been contacted by a former flatmate of victim Gabriel Kovari, who said the 22-year-old artist may have come to harm after meeting someone on the gay dating app Grindr. He said: ‘At the time, the Metropolitan Police were treating the deaths as separate incidents with nothing suspicious to link them, and were not looking for anyone else in connection with them.’

Police finally launched a murder inquiry last week after linking the death of Jack Taylor last month with the three previous deaths, which took place over the summer of 2014.

The Met voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

So he's 40 years old and he has killed 4 people in 15 months. It seems unlikely that he had just started killing - he may have many more past victims.

I had the same thought. I was looking at threads here on WS about missing young men in London but did not find any that would fit.

I do hope that London LE is digging deeper. I'd be surprised frankly if he had just started killing.

They knew.

[...]
Speaking from the front room of their small terraced house, asked what her son was like Mrs Port said: 'He is a quiet boy, tall, 6ft 3in, size 14 shoes. He doesn't say a lot. He had different boyfriends - he is gay.'

Mr Port added: 'Don't me get wrong - I'm against it. We thought he would be alright now - he has just started a new job.

This sounds to me as if the parents were not respecting him being gay, like, he was not "alright". He might have been split himself too, on the one hand being attracted to men, on the other hand hating himself for it - and in turn the men he felt attracted to. So much so that he felt the need to kill them.

again, snipped by me and bbm

I meant to ask, has it been explained how they linked the recent death to the three deaths last year?

They really screwed up there. So very sad.

"Port was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 22, and on Sunday, he was charged with four counts of murder and four counts of administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm. He is currently on trial at Old Bailey."

Also

"Suspected serial killer Stephen Port apparently made a cameo appearance on an episode of BBC’s “Celebrity Masterchef."

In footage of the episode that aired in June, Port, 40, is seen helping JLS singer JB Gill and actress Emma Barton serve pasta and meatballs to bus drivers at East London. He is wearing a chef uniform and a wig, and he can be seen smiling at the camera. "

I also wonder whether he killed other men between September last year and September this year. Just seems odd that he had a 12 month break.

The people related to or associated with Mr Port need to do some major soul-searching or hard-core "thinking."

I'm fairly well versed in serial killers (especially gay ones). I don't get this guy's motive/reasoning/etc. They tend to be (other than "Angels of Death" or "euthanizers") very violent and sick individuals.
With the more famous (Gacy/Corll/Eyler/Berdella/etc) killers, it's hard to say a sentence about them without cursing (or saying some kind of "bad" or "nasty" language) just to describe what they've done.

This guy...
I just don't get it. I could see one (or two) being written down as to partying too hard. But this many?
He basically just causes someone to OD and then they die.
It's not like he kills them as part of some macabre or twisted sex act (that we know thus far). He just gives them too much GHB.

It's almost like he's being one of those "Angel of Death" medical professionals outside of a medical context, if that makes any sense...

I think it makes sense. Like I said earlier, I think he's split inside about his gay nature. He might be believing he did them a favour by ending their 'suffering' of being gay. Like, being gay is similar to an affliction, a mutation, or a handicap. (Like his father said he thought Stephen was "better" now.)

Police in fresh appeal over alleged Barking serial killer Stephen Port

Wednesday 16 December 2015

Today in an highly unusual appeal homicide detectives appealed for anyone who “has knowledge” of Stephen Port, of Cooke Street, Barking to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Duffield, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have information in connection with these incidents, no matter how insignificant you may think it is.

“If you have any reservations about speaking to the police, please rest assured that your call will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.

Trial of alleged serial killer Stephen Port delayed until October

The trial of an alleged serial killer, charged with poisoning four young men he apparently met on gay dating websites, will be delayed for six months because of the enormity of work needed to be done on the case, a court has heard.

Stephen Port allegedly met the men via dating apps before taking them to his home in Barking, east London. All four are alleged to have died after ingesting lethal quantities of the party drug GHB.

Sounds like there's alot more investigating to do, loads of evidence to go through/gather. I wouldn't be surprised if they're linking him to other crimes

I was just coming here to post another article from today. Interesting there's really not much more information about these other attacks although I've not had time to look through twitter or anywhere else so there may be some unofficial sources of information out there. I wonder if in time they will find more victims, quite horrific really.

Trial underway.
___________

Port, a chef, is accused of 29 charges against 12 young men, including four murders, seven rapes, four indecent assaults and of administering a substance with intent over a three-and-a-half-year period. Port denies the charges.

The alleged victims who died were Anthony Walgate, 23, from Hull, Gabriel Kovari, 22, from Lewisham, south London, Daniel Whitworth, 21, from Gravesend, Kent, and Jack Taylor, 25, from Dagenham, east London.

Prosecuting, Jonathan Rees QC said Port met the men through websites such as Grindr. He told the jury of 10 women and two men that the case would feature fairly graphic evidence of a sexual nature which they should approach in “a cool, dispassionate and analytical manner”.

The Old Bailey heard today that Port's first alleged victim, 23-year-old Anthony Walgate, was found dead in a street near his flat in Barking in east London in 2014.

Port was questioned over his involvement and was later jailed for perverting the course of justice, the jury heard today.

But prosecutors say he killed two more victims before going to jail and another young man after he was released.

The court heard that Mr Port called an ambulance claiming to have returned home from a nightshift to discover an unknown male lying unconscious by the front door to the communal entrance.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC said officers investigating Mr Walgate's death later realised the defendant had hired Mr Walgate as a male escort and arrested Mr Port on 26 June 2014 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

The jury heard that in a police interview that day, Mr Port asked a detective: "Can I just say for the scenario - if it was an accident, and if he did have a fit in my place, is that still my fault?"

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC has told jurors that Port had already drugged two young men and raped one before he contacted fashion student and occasional escort Mr Walgate on a website called Sleepyboys.

He offered the student £800 to visit for an "overnight" on June 17, the court heard.

Before heading off, Mr Walgate sent details to a friend, joking it was "in case I get killed".

He gave her the false name of Jo Dean that Port had given him, jurors were told.

Details of the 'suicide note' trying to blame one victim for the death of another.
Port, 41, who allegedly had a fetish for sex with young unconscious males whom he drugged by spiking their drinks with the “date-rape” drug GHB, wrote the note as part of a “wicked” attempt to frame his third victim for killing his second victim, prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC claimed.

The note was found on the body of Daniel Whitworth, 21, a chef, whose propped up body was discovered by a dog walker at a churchyard near Port’s flat in Barking, east London, and who was found to have died from an overdose of GHB – or G – and a sedative drug.

It referred to the death of Gabriel Kovari, 22, whose body, “extraordinarily” said Rees, had been found by the same dog walker in the same position and location three weeks previously, and who also had suffered an overdose of GHB.

In the apparent suicide note Whitworth wrote that he had injected Kovari with GHB during sex, and had not noticed he was not breathing, and was now taking his own life in remorse. The note added: “BTW please do not blame the guy I was with last night, we only had sex and then I left, he knows nothing of what I have done.”

[...]

Rees said: “The police at that stage accepted the apparent suicide note at face value and did not investigate further. In particular, Daniel’s movements prior to his death were not checked and no attempt was made to trace the person referred to in the note as ‘the guy I was with last night’.”

bbm - Looks like more victims have come forward to add to the initial murder charges. A serial rapist escalated to serial killer. Good they got him locked up, sad that four young men had to die before that happened.

ITA. It's a shame his previous victims didn't feel as though they could go to the police (assuming they didn't), I'd imagine GHB would add a lot of confusion as to what had happened, though.

The trial of an alleged gay serial killer has heard how police did not link the deaths of three young men who died in similar circumstances within the space of three months.

[...]

Mr Port's trial at the Old Bailey heard how all three were found in the same propped-up position and had all died from an overdose of GHB.

[...]

In a second interview, Port claimed that, when he met Mr Walgate for sex, the young man had wanted to have "some stuff to make him horny and high" and saw him with a brown bottle.

When he returned from a night shift and found Mr Walgate passed out in his flat and making a "gurgling noise", Port said he panicked, the court was told.

Recounting the defendant's interview, Mr Rees said: "He picked him up under his shoulders and then carried him outside to the communal front entrance.

"He had some concerns that he wasn't alive but he didn't want to think about it."

[...]

Mr Rees said the defendant claims he was elsewhere when Mr Kovari died and he was last seen with Mr Whitworth, his third alleged victim.

http://news.sky.com/story/stephen-port-murder-trial-police-did-not-link-deaths-of-three-men-10607261

I can only think the defence is going to be based on the most unlikely set of coincidences.

Two months after Walgate’s death and five days after meeting Port, Kovari was found dead, the court heard. Kovari, who was originally from Slovakia, was looking for accommodation and told friends he had found a room in Barking, which was in the defendant’s flat, it was claimed.

Port described Kovari to friends as his “new Slovakian twink flatmate” saying he was “22, quite cute, tall and skinny”. Three days after Kovari moved in, Port told friends he had moved out and “gone to stay with another local guy … some soldier guy he had been chatting to online”.

Kovari’s body was found propped up in St Margaret’s churchyard – 500 metres from Port’s flat – by the dog walker on 28 August 2014, the court heard. His death was treated as “non-suspicious but unexplained” and caused by GHB intoxication.

[...]

Jurors were told that shortly before Kovari’s body was found, Port had told his sister there was a body in his bed. Rees said he told her they had been taking drugs and that he could not wake the other man and realised he was dead. His sister told him to go to police, and he later claimed to her he had done so and been held for 20 hours before being bailed, which was not true, said Rees.

[...]

Explaining why Port was facing murder and manslaughter charges in relation to the four deaths, Rees said in order to prove murder the prosecution had to prove the men were unlawfully killed and that at the time Port did the act that killed them he intended to do them “some really serious bodily harm” or kill them.

Rees said the prosecution did not allege Port intended to kill Walgate, “but we do contend that he intended to cause him some really serious bodily harm by putting him in a drug-induced coma – a deep state of unconsciousness” .

If the prosecution failed to prove Port intended really serious bodily harm, they could convict on manslaughter if it were proved that Walgate was killed by an unlawful and dangerous act.

___________

More at link. Paraphrasing bits on Taylor, Port blocked him on grindr shortly before he died, which would remove their conversation string. Port's DNA was found on a bottle of GHB found near Taylor. Port was arrested after cctv was discovered of him meeting Taylor at Barking station shortly before his death.

I have no idea why he's pleading not guilty. I reckon the best he can hope for is guilty on 1 count of manslaughter and 3 of murder. Then there's all the other charges which look like they're going to help show a pattern of behaviour.
