Police are renewing appeals to trace a Tooting tattoo artist who has been missing for over 36 years.

Thomas Gerry Redmond (29.12.53), who was known to family and friends as Gerry, was last seen at his home address in Moyser Road, SW16 in the summer of 1979.

He was 26 years old at the time, although the exact date and circumstances of the last sighting is not known.

Speaking to The Irish Post, Gerry’s brother Darren Redmond, 52, said: “My brother just vanished off the face of the earth. He had a few problems, he got into drugs through his girlfriend. He tried to get her off drugs but he couldn’t, then he had a breakdown.

“My mum sent him to live with my dad in Roscommon, but life was too slow for him there and he came back. It was soon after he came back that he disappeared. I’ve gone back to Ireland to search for him but we just don’t know where he is.

“We need to get some closure, both my parents have died and so did my older sister,” Darren Redmond said.

“There’s just a few of us left. We need to create some sort of memorial for him otherwise there’ll be no trace or history that he ever existed.”

According to police Redmond has tattoos including an eagle, pirate and rose and the words 'Rob Tattoo' on his right forearm. On his left forearm he had tattoos of two birds, a rose, a horse's head and the words 'Gerry and Darren' in reference to his brother.

There have been appeals to trace Gerry over the past decades, including a TV appeal on Carlton TV’s ‘Missing’ on 11 July 1995, but none have proved successful. Sergeant Tony Rutland, who is now overseeing the appeal, said: “Gerry’s disappearance has been a tragic mystery to the family for well over 30 years. “People may have had information about Gerry which they were previously unwilling to share, but I would hope that given the passage of time - and the family’s obvious desire to know what happened - anyone with information may now feel able to come forward.

Sister Maggie Redmond, now 55, was the last member of her family to see him alive in the hallway of their house where he was packing things into bin bags.

Ms Redmond, who was 17 at the time, said: “He said he was going to see a mate in the country and he left. That was the last time I ever saw him.”

“I didn’t know he was never going to come back.”

The family say Mr Redmond, know to them as Gerry, had not been himself before the disappearance, behaving erratically.

Mr Redmond, who worked at the Barry Louvaine tattoo shop on Garratt Lane, was described by brother Darren as someone who was popular with everybody he met.

HIs brother, now 52 but just 13 when Gerry left, said: “Everyone loved him, he was just one of those guys who knew everybody. It made me a special kid as well because people knew me as his brother.

“When he went missing it was devastating, especially for my mum. His birthday was at Christmas and every year she would be in tears.

“I’ve just lost one of the best friends I’ve ever had as a kid.”
    -------
Darren Redmond said: “To find him would be like winning the lottery. There’d be nothing better than that.”

I can't find any SM set up regarding Finding Gerry but if there is any of the following (that I suggest, already out there) then please excuse the below.

It would be a good idea for the family to have a Missing poster for Gerry created and shared on the Internet.

The family might not be Facebook friendly or Internet friendly even and if so, it might also be a thought for them to try get a younger member of the family to set up a Missing page on Facebook for him.

There would be more chance his picture and story would circulate the Internet through shares, apart from these few media stories.

It would be great if they found him after all this time.

Best wishes to the Redmond family in their quest to find their long lost brother, Gerry.

I'm going to go have a look on this site for further tips to post for the family, to help in their search for him, just in case they ever find their way to Websleuths.
