@RachelCroydonAd:
Hazell sentencing about to start; court filling up #tiasharp
Hazell is in the dock and being watched very closely by all in public gallery #tiasharp
He is sitting down with his head bowed #tiasharp
@SkyFixerJim:
Back in court 2 Old Bailey where the sentencing process will begin shortly for Stuart Hazell, killer of 12 year old Tia Sharp. #tiasharp
Hazell's defence have submitted a psychiatric report to the judge for him to consider as background. Silence as the judge leafs through it.
Hazell in the dock wearing what appears to be the same grey t-shirt he's worn throughout. He also wears glasses and a beaded necklace.
Hazell appears to have put weight on while on remand. If anything he looks a little healthier than before his arrest last summer. #tiasharp
Edis QC is now rounding up what would have been the rest of his prosecution case. Hazell's browser history, showing visits to paedophile..
..websites and the dating of the various images that were found on his phone. He does not go into detail here.
Edis: murder cases are always serious... But this is a small category of those that are very serious indeed.
Edis: this was the murder of a child involving sexual motivation. He suggests this would mean a 30 year starting point for sentence.
Edis QC: a "whole life" starting point would apply in cases of a sexual motivation.
Stuart Hazell sits staring at his feet as the prosecutor and the judge discuss what should be the starting point for his sentence.
They are discussing sentences given in previous, similar cases. "30 years starting point" keeps coming up. #tiasharp
Stuart Hazell will turn 38 on the 26th of May.
Edis QC is now talking about "aggravating factors"; taking a photo of Tia's naked body after he had killed her, being one.
The "carefully organised" concealment of her body being another. Going on TV to proclaim his innocence, yet another.
Edis QC: we may never know exactly what happened to Tia, but there is evidence to support theory she suffered a very serious sexual attack.
Edis reminds the judge that the pathologist during his evidence said he could not exclude the possibility of a very serious sexual assault.
Edis: It is clear that he committed a significant sexual offence against her, killed her and took that picture as some sort of keepsake.
The jury's work is done in this case. They're under no obligation to remain in court. All 12 have decided to stay however.
Victim impact statement now from Tia's mother. I've lost my trust in everyone. It's hard for me to imagine she's really gone.
Tia's mother: Tia was my mums life. Tia loved to be with my mum. When the trial is done, it's all over for everyone else. It won't be for us
I have so many questions for Stuart. I want meet him. Sometimes I feel pity. Sometimes I want to hurt him.
The court hears Hazell has convictions going back as far as 1991. He has no convictions for sexual offences for serious violence.
Most of his convictions concern burglary, theft. There was also one for racially aggravated assault. Another for drugs supply.
Also sentenced to 12 months after he was caught with a machete. #tiasharp
One of the jurors was quietly crying as she listened to the victim impact statements.
Break for lunch. Will continue with Hazell's lawyer giving mitigation for his client at 1405.
