Tony Eastlake, 55, was stabbed to death on the Essex Road in Islington on Saturday 29 May just before 5.30pm, while on his way to have dinner with a friend after closing up his flower stall, which is a well known local fixture.

Early reports on social media suggested he had been stabbed after attempting to intervene in a mugging, but today's news reports suggest the attack was completely random. Paramedics worked extensively to save his life but he was declared dead at the scene around half an hour later.

No suspects have been apprehended, no arrests made. Police appeal below.

First picture of flower seller in 50s 'stabbed in back on his way to dinner'

"Police have launched a murder investigation after a flower seller, pictured here for the first time, was reportedly stabbed 'while on his way to dinner' in North London.

"Named locally as Tony Eastlake, in his 50s, he died in Essex Road in Islington after being attacked just before 5.30pm.

"A friend of Mr Eastlake's told My London at the scene of his death that "a guy randomly came up and stabbed him in the back when he was on his way to dinner with his friend."

"He had a flower stall near Essex Road station and tributes have poured in for him online, reports the Mirror.

"One person wrote: “You will be truly missed Tony, serving our community for over 30 years, making everyone you spoke to smile.

"You were not just a local businessman, but a friend to many.”

Killer of Islington 'legend' 'didn't look back' after stabbing him to death

"The man who lost his life in North London last night was 'randomly stabbed in the back by a young kid who didn't look back'.

"Tony Eastlake, in his 50s, died in Essex Road in Islington after being attacked just before 5.30pm yesterday.

"He had run the flower stall near Essex Road station for around 40 years and was known as a "friendly man and a local legend."

"Tony had left his stall and is thought to have been on his way to dinner with his friend, who lives a few hundred metres down Essex Road, when he was stabbed.

"He was "randomly stabbed in the back by a 'young kid' who didn't look back," said the friend, Mark Kennedy, with whom Tony had grown up.

"The stabbing happened outside Mark's house and he ran out with another of Tony's friends, Shannon.

"The pair were with Tony when he died.

"When the ambulance arrived, medics did their best to save him, even conducting "open heart surgery in the street," according to Mark.

"Remembering his friend, Mark said: "He was one of the most placid men. Never been in a fight, never been arrested."

"Shannon, who was also there when Tony died, said he was a "lovely, amazing friend."

"Tony Laws, who worked with Tony years ago in a fruit shop and has been a good friend since, said: "Not a bad bone in his body. Such a smashing guy a lovely lovely guy."

"Local residents gathered around his flower stall this morning, bringing bouquets of flowers, lighting candles, and writing messages on his stall.

"The resounding sentiment was that Tony was a kind and generous man and a key member of the community who will be sorely missed.

"Locals recalled walking past Tony every day and being greeted with a smile.

"Even those who had just passed him by and never spoken to him had warm memories.

"He was known to be incredibly trusting, and would let people come back another day to pay if they didn't have the money.

"Other residents remember buying their Christmas trees from Tony and always seeing him chatting with someone.

"One woman said: “We’ve lost a legend of Essex Road.”

"Katie, 75, who has known Tony since he was a boy helping his father at the stall, which he took over when he was 16, said: "It brings home all the knife crime. So far it’s been over there... you don’t know the people. But now... It’s awful. Unspeakable."

"Police have launched a murder investigation into the case.

"In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 17:27hrs on Saturday, 29 May to reports of an injured man on Essex Road, N1.

"Officers attended and found a man suffering from a stab wound and immediately provided first aid.

"Despite their efforts, and that of the London Ambulance Service, the man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 17:58hrs."

"A post-mortem examination will be held in due course, the statement added, and formal identification awaits.

"A crime scene remains in place with police cordons erected in the area."

    Police appeal:

Islington murder victim named as detectives appeal for information

"We have a dedicated team of officers working around the clock to find the person or people responsible and I would like to hear from anybody who could help out investigation. I am particularly keen to hear from people who were in Halliford Road or Ecclesbourne Road between 17:20hrs and 17:25hrs. Did you see Tony? Or did you witness an altercation, or see anyone running away?

"I would also like to appeal to people within this area, including residential blocks and houses between Ecclesbourne Road, Halliford Road and Essex Road who may have private CCTV. I would very much like to hear from delivery drivers and owners of cars with dash cams who were travelling through the area at the time of the incident. You may have captured significant footage that we need to recover as soon as possible.

"Lastly, I would like to hear from those within the community who may have information about why this murder has taken place. We are looking at several possible motives and I am keeping an open mind as to the circumstances behind the attack. information given to police will be treated in the strictest confidence."

How awful! Seems so random. There seems to be a lot of teen knife crime. Could this be some kind of gang initiation type thing? Hopefully justice is swift.

Vigil for Islington flower seller killed in broad daylight

There's to be a candlelit vigil at his stall at 6pm tonight (Monday).

There still seems to be a lot of conflicting information about whether this was random or because he tried to stop a mugging. Social media was reporting a second stabbing in an adjacent road last night (apparently not fatal, as there are no Met press releases this morning), so it may be that there's an escalating knife crime problem in the area generally.

Hopefully the police appeal for dashcam etc footage will result in an arrest before long.

Oh wow, thank you for updating the thread @Ched. Disturbing that the arrested man and the victim knew each other, except to say that Tony Eastlake seems to have been so well known locally that that might just mean the arrested man lives locally. It will be interesting to see what else comes out.

There was another article in the mail yesterday which was removed after J.P was arrested.

In my opinion it could be that Tony ended his relationship with Joe's mother and she took her own life so Joe held Tony responsible for her death.

"...That woman, Alicia Callaghan, 43, was found dead at another Islington address on April 1.

It's unclear how she died but it's understood there were no suspicious circumstances.

Meanwhile, police confirmed today that a 48-year-old woman, accused of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice, had been arrested.

She was taken into custody at a police station in north London yesterday for questioning, before being released on bail to return to police in mid-June.

    [...]

Ms Callaghan was found at 1.08am in the property and an inquest has been opened and adjourned - with a full hearing due later this summer.

    [...]

The suspect blew a kiss to his father and shouted 'I love you' and smiled and winked as he was led away after a brief court appearance this morning.

A man, identified as Peppiatt's father, shouted 'stay strong, boy!' as he was led away to the cells following the two-minute hearing. "

Suspect, 21, accused of killing 'Flower man of Islington', 55, is son of his deceased ex-girlfriend | Daily Mail Online
