We’re here to stop rumors: People have been saying that officials are predicting an earthquake in the next 30 minutes. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Earthquakes cannot be predicted, we are 95% certain that this was the main shock.

Me and the fam are okay. It was scary. I was on my front porch with my coffee, then Bam! I watched my porch pillars lean and twist about a foot. I grew up in L.A. and this quake was up there. Had some things fall and break. Been cleaning up and packing up the car in case another one hits. Had some strong aftershocks. Infrastructure is pretty good. My officer kids are busy. Some downtown buildings got hit good. Will check in shortly.

Moderate and large quakes in the Wasatch Front region are infrequent, but not unexpected. Since the late 1800s, there have been 26 M5+ quakes within 250 km of this event. Moment tensor solutions show slip on a moderately dipping normal fault striking to the NW or SSE.

This quake is consistent with the style of deformation observed along the Wasatch fault system, a large and complex north-south trending fault system that stretches from southern Idaho to central Utah. It occurred within a distributed zone of faulting west of Wasatch fault zone.

USGS

The Wasatch Fault is capable of generating large (M7+) earthquakes and poses a significant hazard due to its proximity to large urban environments.

We have released an aftershock forecast. Be aware that no one can predict exact time/place of an event, including aftershocks. Our forecasts give us understanding of chances of having more events within a given time period in affected area.
