Search underway for missing 3-year-old Navajo Nation girl in southeastern Utah

    [...]

A photo of the missing girl was not provided or immediately available.

Navajo Nation authorities say the search continued into Thursday night and that over 100 volunteers joined the effort Friday.

Circumstances of the girl's disappearance weren't immediately clear. Council spokesman Carl Slater says reports indicated that searchers focused initial efforts along a runoff-swollen creek where dogs were observed barking toward the water.

Slater says the location is several miles from where the creek feeds into the San Juan River.

Seems creek is high and water is flowing rapidly. A rescuer almost was swept off while searching there.

"The Navajo Police Department along with other law enforcement agencies and volunteers, have focused their search efforts primarily along the bank near McElmo Creek.

At this point, the circumstances of Andanndine Jones’ disappearance does not appear to be an abduction. The Navajo police Department continues to investigate the situation with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies.

Nightfall has concluded the second day of search efforts in locating the three-year-old who was reported to have three-year-old who was reported to have walked away from her residence Thursday afternoon. The Navajo Police Department was notified after her family was unable to locate her."

The Navajo Police Department Facebook page comments from cousins of the family are stating, the parents reacted quickly when they could not find their little girl. The cousins state the child was wearing a T-shirt, shorts, no shoes and walked away with the family dogs. They also mentioned their area has no cell phone service.

After reading so many Navajo mystery books by Tony Hillerman and his daughter Anne, and books by R. Allen Chappell, I feel like I know this area. (Realistically, I have also visited many places in Navajo Nation and I this area.). I figured there was likely no cellphone service. If she's with the dogs, that may be a good thing. And barefoot, the weather might be fairly warm. Hope the dogs have kept her safe. Hope they can find her safe, poor baby.

Oh no...winter conditions. There goes my previous warm weather hope. Why then was she dressed in shorts and was also barefoot? Is that accurate from the last person to see her?

Water is also contaminated from King Mine runoff.

    Navajo Police Department

The third day of operations included three teams of over 100 volunteers who were searching on foot while boat crews from Grand County, the State of Utah and the Bureau of Land Management were searching the river. The boat teams covered 24 miles of the river while the volunteers on foot, have to this point, covered 8 miles of riverbed west of Aneth, Utah. The foot search will continue to 5pm. Water based search efforts will be suspended in anticipation of the heavy metal contamination released from the Gold King Mine on Thursday.

    Navajo Times

Wastewater from the mine was currently bypassing the facility at a rate of 250 to 300 gallons per minute, according to estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

    https://ksltv.com/410096/search-3-year-old-girl-san-juan-county-continues/
Day three of the search for a missing San Juan County girl within the Navajo Nation began early Saturday morning.

More than 100 volunteers gathered at 7 a.m. at the Aneth chapter house that has become the headquarters for the law enforcement operation.

    [...]

Police said it appears she walked away from her house. Since the family lives near McElmo Creek in Aneth, a lot of the search efforts have been on the banks of the creek as well as downstream.

The water flow is high right now because of the snow melt runoff.

    [...]

Chief Francisco is asking any volunteers who might come out later to check in first.

“We are asking the public, if you’re wanting to help in the search, make sure you go to the chapter house and check in so we can make sure we have a coordinated effort,” he said.
