South Salt Lake police are following a couple of leads in Tuesday's fatal stabbing of Sherry Black, a used book dealer and mother-in-law of Utah Jazz owner Greg Miller. They have not disclosed whether they were narrowing in on a suspect or a motive.

Police have released few details about the slaying. Authorities are carefully reviewing the crime scene, and the investigation is in the beginning stages, said South Salt Lake Sgt. Gary Keller. As of Tuesday night, police hadn't determined a motive for the slaying.

"At this time, we don't have a suspect," Keller said.

It was not immediately known whether the business was open or if anyone else was present. Keller said Wednesday morning that police would continue to restrict traffic along 700 East as the crime scene investigation continued. He said earlier that forensic evidence is going to be crucial and authorities are going to pore over all evidence.

Police are also asking for the public's help. "If they may have seen a car speeding away, somebody running from this location, anything that may have been or seemed suspicious or minute, please give us a call," Keller said. You can reach the South Salt Lake Police Department at 801-840-4000.

Specifically, they are looking for anything that happened between 8 a.m. Tuesday, when the store opened, and 1:45 p.m., when Black's body was discovered.

Sherry Black remembered as likable, quiet, and involved with family

Black's brother, Jim Waycasy, said he is unaware of anyone who would want to kill his sister. He described her as likable and a grandmother who was very involved with her family. He said her business mostly involved book sales online. He said he never heard her talk about troublesome business or personal relationships.

Earl Black reported finding his wife dead Tuesday at 1:43 p.m. in their home at 3466 S. 700 East. "The husband discovered her. It's a residence with a business next door, and he walked into the business and discovered her body," said Keller.

My prayers go out to Sherry's family. What a tragedy.

I found this description of her business:

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/home/50779159-76/black-sherry-books-earl.html.csp

"...Earl and Sherry Black ran B&W Billiards and Books from a building next to their home ..."

"....Sherry Black’s used book shop was a successful business. She sold books, mostly Mormon texts and children’s books, all over the world, he said. She began the business years ago by going to thrift stores and estate sales looking for books. On her Amazon page Tuesday, Sherry Black was selling a hardcover edition of The Grapes of Wrath for a starting price of $2,750.

"She was smart enough to know what books were worth money and which ones weren’t..."

    and

"...Salt Lake City book merchant KS said he used to see Sherry Black at antique sales. Sherry Black’s business was largely "by appointment only," KS said....

    more at link

I am wondering about the billiards portion of the business. Did they sell billiards supplies or memorabilia? If she had expensive books in her shop, is it possible that she had an expensive billiard collectible which was worth far more than she was aware?

It sounds so personal with the attack Sherry suffered. Or it could be robbery gone bad though. It's been awhile since I've been on that stretch of 7th east. Is parking allowed on the street? I know further south it's definitely emergency parking only.

Detectives have have not yet identified a suspect or determined a motive, but on Thursday, they released information on a piece of evidence that was recovered at the crime scene.

Police say a unique “A/X” (Armani Exchange) Men’s Belt was recovered near Black's body and that the belt fit a person with an approximate 36 - 38 inch waist. (see slideshow in the "Images" tab above).

So the perp must have taken his belt off? Makes me think SO. No mention of that by LE though.

A $50,000 reward and new information about the slaying of the mother-in-law of Larry H. Miller Group CEO Greg Miller were announced Monday.

Police revealed that DNA evidence was collected from the Nov. 30 crime scene where Sherry Black was found dead, in the form of blood. South Salt Lake Police Lt. Dwayne Ruth said the blood was likely from the hand of the killer who is believed to be a male.

Family of slain Sherry Black seeks public's help

On Monday, the family held a press conference, with police officers saying they have not been able to determine a motive for the murder. Officers said no books were believed to be stolen and the cash register was full.
Officers recovered DNA from the killer several months ago, but the sample has not been matched to anyone. The only information obtained from the DNA is that it belongs to a man.

They should have been able to determine if the suspect was black or caucasian. And if a big study of the DNA was done they should be able to tell the color of his eyes.

I wonder who in the family they have tested DNA from? No books stolen, money left in register. That let's out one of the biggest motives right there. It does seem personal. First a beating, sounds like rage. Then stabbing, which is very personal. I would have expected this one to be solved by now.

That's interesting about dna eye colors. I had no idea that could be determined. That might be some of the things LE is holding back. ITA about the nature of the crime. Below is another article from the Trib.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/53003829-78/black-earl-miller-police.html.csp

Both Miller and Earl Black complimented South Salt Lake police for their work. Three South Salt Lake detectives joined the family Monday and, at least once, told Earl Black not to say too much about the day of the murder.
Earl Black did say that other than his wife’s body, there were no other signs someone had been in the store. The door was not forced; there was no indication anything from the store was missing.
"There was money in the cash register," Earl Black said.

Sherry Black news conference generates leads for police

On Monday, Sherry Black's family held a news conference hoping new information could bring new light to the case. The only person that is being investigated by police is Helaman Pragana, a suspected serial bandit who law enforcement think terrorized women for months (back-story CLICK HERE). They are checking the DNA sample to see if there is a match.
Police say DNA results will not be released for another six weeks and that at this point Pragana is only a person of interest.
