The Chesterfield County Police Department is still seeking the public’s help to identify a man whose remains were discovered on Sunday, March 13, 2016, near the 1300 block of Bellwood Road.

On March 13, a man fishing in the area found a body along the bank of the James River and called police. Chesterfield County Fire and EMS personnel assisted with the recovery of the remains, which have been found to be those of a black male with facial hair.

With the assistance of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Virginia Department of Forensic Science, Chesterfield County Police are still working to determine the identity of the man and his cause of death. At the time his body was recovered, he was wearing: a black Nike T-shirt, size XL; Pro Player track pants, size L; a fleece jacket, one size fits all; plaid boxer shorts, unknown size; and two black socks.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- It's been an emotional time for the Alkebu-lan family since their family member disappeared three years ago.

“It’s really uncomfortable to just not know where your brother is, the circumstances, things like that," said Mensah Alkebu-lan.

Mensah said his brother, Hassan, disappeared three years ago.
...
"‘You go back to the good times and you realize how much people really loved him and you just kind of stay there. Once they start to turn you realize it’s not him, it’s somebody else," said Mensah.

Mensah said his brother was 39 and suffered from mental illness and overtime became distant.

“You just really felt like you couldn’t do anything to help him," he said. "Never just felt like you could make him happy.”
