VA VA - Jonathan Dorey, 22, Richmond, 2 March 2010

Yikes - I remember the area around the VCU campus not being a very nice neighborhood.

A nice mountain bike would be very noticeable.

Jonny has been missing for two weeks.

Times Online article today: "Jonny Dorey, 22, from Guernsey, was last seen in a surveillance video shortly after 11am on March 2 wheeling his mountain bike away from the campus of the Virginia Commonwealth University, where he had just attended a lecture.

The last time Mr Dorey used his mobile telephone was also that morning, as was the last purchase he is known to have made using credit cards, at a 7-Eleven shop.

His parents, Alan and Debbie, have travelled from Guernsey with their youngest son Simon to join the search effort and the university has offered a $5,000 (£3,300) reward for information leading to the discovery of Mr Dorey.

His friends have spread the word of his disappearance on YouTube and with a Facebook group “Help Find Jonny Dorey ” that now has more than 19,000 members. Yet police appear to be no closer to finding Mr Dorey than they were on March 4, when his disappearance was first reported.

The search today, in rainy conditions, focused on a rural area near the university campus that is popular with walkers and mountain bikers. Mr Dorey is a keen biker. He was last seen with his bike, a backpack and had his mobile telephone with him, but none of the items has been found.

Bob Beebe, a close friend of the Dorey family who has been asked by the missing man’s parents to be the family spokesman, said that the search would focus on the Belle Isle area, near the VCU campus. “There is a very large group of people gathering around the Belle Isle area, which was the last known message link to Jonny’s phone.

“It is a beautiful rural setting, very popular with mountain bikers and walkers. He may have gone off on a mountain bike trail, had an accident and injured himself. If he is lying there we want to find him.” Police say there is no evidence so far of foul play.

Mr Beebe said that Mr Dorey had a close relationship with his family and that it was unlike him to be out of contact with them. In recent emails to a friend in Guernsey Mr Dorey discussed the two of them travelling to Florida. Yet no travel dates had been set and the friend never flew to the US, diminishing hopes that Mr Dorey might simply have gone on a trip without informing anybody.

Mr Dorey is described as between 5ft 10in and 6ft tall, with brown hair. He wears glasses and was last seen wearing a white and blue plaid jacket, a navy blue backpack, dark jeans and black trainers".

Please do all you can my darling Websleuthers, and thanks for all that you do, every day! x

Very familiar with the VCU area as I'm from Richmond.

Fears are growing over a British exchange student who disappeared 12 days ago from a university in Virginia. Jonny Dorey, 22, a geography student from Guernsey, was last seen leaving the Virginia Commonwealth University campus in Richmond, US, on 2 March with his mountain bike and a backpack.

He last used his mobile phone that morning, from Belle Isle, a rural area close to the campus popular with mountain bikers and walkers. Despite two extensive searches in the area, police are no further forward in tracing him or his bike.

Family members of missing Virginia Commonwealth University foreign-exchange student Jonathan S. Dorey bought bicycles in Richmond yesterday as they continued their search.
Dorey's parents and younger brother flew to the U.S. more than a week ago from their home in Guernsey, a small island in the English Channel. Dorey, an experienced bicyclist, disappeared outside his VCU residence hall two weeks ago today. He last was seen walking from the dorm with his mountain bike.
Jonathan S. Tunner, a local mountain biker who is assisting the Doreys, said the family is interested in searching the Virginia Capital Trail. The unfinished pedestrian and bicycle trail runs from Richmond through Jamestown to Williamsburg, mostly along state Route 5.
"They're very hopeful about finding Jonny, and they thought, given his affinity for the coast . . . they thought that perhaps he was headed toward the coast," said Tunner, who organized a search of trails on both sides of the James River on Sunday.
Bob Beebe, a close friend of the Dorey family, says they have named him as their spokesman and do not wish to be interviewed.

Does anyone know his birthdate? Can't find a bit of info on him.

Both Behl & Dorey apparently lived in Gladding Hall, although there seem to be three separate facilities that share this name. In Behl's case, Ben Fawley was convicted of killing her, but he did not actually admit guilt. Evidence against him was quite strong.

I followed the Behl case closely, and recall that Fawley did admit to strangling her, but claimed it was accidental during consensual rough sex. I don't think there's a link there, other than the mutual dorm being a creepy coincidence.

Maybe Fawley took the fall for a group of killers; but it's unlikely, though. Behl reminded me somewhat of Morgan Harrington. Seems like Virginia is not a safe place to go to college.

Walker - Wow, really? Intellegent comment....I sure hope you are not making these comments from Florida, New York, California, Colorado, or any number of cities, states and countries that experience these horrendous situations forced upon them by pathetic criminals.
For Jonny's family and friends, I know the community is very concerned for his well being. I pray you find him soon.

I found this helpful when I looked up where Jonny was last seen and his cell was last used. It's a good visual for me, perhaps it will help someone else.

Looking at the location of his last cell phone usage--- offhand I am hoping that he didn't have some kind of accident. I hope he is found soon.

"Richmond authorities say this afternoon they’ve found the backpack of a missing Virginia Commonwealth University student near the James River in the Shockoe Bottom area, close to Dock and Pear streets."

This doesn't look good...
snip from your link:

“They are continuing, though, to look for Jonny Dorey and the bike,“ said Mike Porter a VCU spokesman, referring to the student’s missing mountain bicycle.

so they find the backpack but not the bike... this is sounding hinky to me!!! take a look at this map of where the backpack was found... this is not near an area to mountain bike and not even right next to the water..... again... hinky....
