Scott Lilly, from South Bend IN, was a through hiker on the Appalachian Trail. His body was found in a shallow grave on a side trail off the AT. His death was ruled a homicide by Asphyxiation (Suffocation).

Shawn Caudell of the VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation the case is an FBI case and therefore the decision to include in the VSP cold cases is an FBI decision. He stated he contacted the FBI and they confirmed the case is being handled by the FBI's Charlottesville office, which is a satellite office of the FBI's Richmond Field Office.
