Trial date set for suspect in Salem murder

An April 3 trial date has been set for 33-year-old Jeffrey Scott Easley on charges of murder and abduction, according to Roanoke County Circuit Court records.
It was in June that Easley appeared for the first time since the December ordeal in Roanoke County Circuit Court in Salem when a capital defense attorney was appointed for him.

Easley, 33, is charged with capital murder of 42-year-old Tina Smith, his former girlfriend, as well as abduction with intent to defile Tina Smith’s daughter, Brittany.

Abduction suspect Easley's lawyers to seek facts on trip to California

Defense attorneys Mark Claytor and Thomas Roe want to look into three or four different statements made by Brittany Mae Smith to detectives in San Francisco, Roe said. The attorneys also plan to visit the grocery store where they were spotted and see other evidence: a tent they bought in Salem, sleeping clothes, information from the person who identified the two.

Jeff Easley pleads no contest to capital murder, gets life in prison

Early on the morning of the murder, Tina Smith sent a text to Easley saying "We need to talk right now."

Later that morning, there were also texts between Tina Smith's 12-year-old daughter and Easley.

One of the texts from from Easley to Brittany Smith said "When you get back, I'm going to do it. I can't lose you."

“Easley had almost complete access to Brittany for nearly five months prior to the murder," Mason said in a news release. "The investigation revealed that during that time Easley gradually increased his influence over the girl - even to the point of isolating her from family members. A text message sent from Tina Smith to a friend on the day of the murder stated that she thought that Easley had actually “brainwashed” her daughter.”

Jeffrey Easley convicted of killing Tina Smith in Roanoke County

The plea deal ensures that Easley will likely die in prison.

Easley had little to say in court, only answering the judge's questions with one word answers.

Tina Smith's family declined comment after the hearing.

Roanoke County Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Leach said, to his knowledge, Brittany Smith was still having some "rough days," but "coming along."

This is one of the first cases I followed on WS. Justice served......would have liked to have seen the DP for Tina's sake....but he won't be preying on 12 year old girls now...

Prayers for Brittany...
