Would you give a synopsis for those of us who don't have Facebook accounts?

Sure. This should be ok as it was posted by his mother on the Facebook page for Shenandoah National Park.

Ty had been prescribed a drug for acne. The doctor had recently increased the dosage of the medication. Ty began experiencing problems, including hallucinations, that his mom thought might be linked to the drug. At one point he had seizures. She took him to the hospital where he was treated and released. Back at home, he managed to sneak out and leave in his car. Family began tracking his cell phone and managed to follow him in another car, eventually following him to Shenandoah National Park. When they approached, he took off in the car and crashed a short distance away. He then left the car and ran off on foot into the woods adjacent to the road.

Searchers have since discovered some of his clothing, but they believe he's still partially dressed - hence the revised description.

He's a young guy who is probably very healthy. The weather, while cool and rainy, has warmed up. He could still be out there, hungry but ready to go home. JMO

Mr. Sauer was last seen the evening of Thursday, April 22 at mile 35 on Skyline Drive. There are trails and other areas of the park that may close because of search operations from day-to-day.

Claire Comer, interpretive specialist for Shenandoah National Park, told the Rappahannock News around noon on Monday that roughly 65 trained search and rescue personnel are actively looking for Sauer. “We have about five dog teams and we are, based on some clues and a lost person behavioral analysis, concentrating on the Hazel Mountain area of the park.”

Over the weekend a helicopter search using Forward Looking Infrared technology was unsuccessful in locating the missing teen. “Unfortunately the canopy has just filled in too much for that to give us much good information,” Comer said. “It picked up animals and some of the searchers, but nothing that we were able to use really.”

Comer added that park officials will deliver another update around 1 p.m. on Monday.

Comer also confirmed that Sauer’s family has been contacted and is on site at Shenandoah National Park.

Okay, he’s scared and running, driving as fast as he can. Does he know where he’s going? Does he have a plan? Oh no, his folks found him. What does he do?

Keeps running, driving, I don’t know where I’m going. Just get away, anywhere, don’t let them catch me. Drive! Faster. Crash! Oh no, get out of the car. Hurry, run. run. fast. My legs are wobbly and I can’t run anymore. Stop! Fall against tree. Think, what do I do? Just keep running, walking just keep going. Walk. Whew. I’m so hot and sweaty. Take off my clothes. Cool down. Sit down. Rest. Need water. Look for water. What am I gonna do now?
*I feel so badly for him. This is a long shot but I found a video from 2017 and it kinda looks like him. The boy in the vid looks so young, I can’t tell. What do y’all think?

It might be, its difficult to say. The hair color isn't right, but it does match the hair color in the graduation photo being used for his flyer. The more recent photo looks like his hair is lighter in color. He's probably grown up a lot since 2017.

IIRC, in the FB post someone made quoting his mom, the medication made his personality and behavior change drastically. What he's done in running away into the woods is not how he normally behaves. The medical issues he had leading up to this sound very serious.

My heart aches for him, poor guy. Hopefully, the medication wears off and he can think more clearly. Then he can find his way out. I'm sure he can find some water there, from videos of people hiking that area, there are a lot of streams, etc.

my daughter was on Accutane....monitored very very closely by the consultant. it did work for her but as a parent i was so relieved once she was off it

Search Suspended

Luray, VA - Based on a preliminary identification of remains found Monday, April 26, 2021, the search for Ty Sauer conducted by Shenandoah National Park with support from Virginia Department of Emergency Management has been suspended. All trails in the Hazel Mountain area have been reopened.

The body of a male believed to be Ty Sauer was discovered by searchers today at 2:55 p.m. The body is being transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Manassas for positive ID and determination of cause of death. The remains were found in the park about 2.5 miles from the boundary in Rappahannock County and about 2 miles from where he was last seen Thursday, April 22.

Shenandoah National Park joins Virginia Department of Emergency Management in thanking the many organizations that were involved including DOGS-East, Christian Aid Ministries Search & Rescue, Va. There is an unidentified man (possibly from US) found in a trail bathroom in Ontario, who is believed to have died in the washroom from the acne medication found with his remains.

Also noting a young German man who had taken antibiotics whilst on holiday in Bulgaria, who seemingly became paranoid afterwards and started running and kept running from the airport where he was checking in to return home, he is still missing.

This is so heartbreaking I was hoping so much that he would be found. Unfortunately this makes sense, as a disoriented person in the woody mountains of a national park does not stand a great chance. I was hoping the medication would wear off and he would be able to find help. I am interested to know what was the cause of death, I am not sure if hypothermia or a fall would be more likely.

Oh no, omg, his poor parents. Oh no! My heart just sank with a loud low groan. Bless his heart. I’m sad for this young man who’s mom’s dreams for him have just imploded within her. Omg, what is she going to do with her grief? Where can she put it where it doesn’t hurt so bad? Someone, please hold her up. She can’t bear the pain. Omg, it hurts so bad! No!

My husband is a pharmacist and I was just talking to him about this medication. They had to take online courses on it since it is very much monitored by Dr's and pharmacists due to these reactions. They can't just refill, the patient needs to seen Dr's regularly and get new refills from them 1st.

So very sad for this young man. Prayers to his family and friends. Horrible outcome.
