Volusia County - Daytona Beach (Ridgwood Ave corridor)

Would they let us know if there was a DNA match? In most cases, I'd be inclined to say no. But the information released by this LE agency exceeds the norm. In fact, as far as I know, Chitwood is the only LE authority in the area even to use the word "serial killer". So I have a hunch that if there were a DNA match, the public would know. It's hard to guess, though, because so many factors could come into play. At least he did acknowledge the possibility of a connection to the earlier murders, which says he's keeping an open mind and will take measures to confirm or rule out a link.

That's a good point about Chitwood. From the videos and interviews I saw I liked what I heard out of him, he seemed to have a good grasp on the situation. My line of thought was, If they knew it was connected they might have wanted to keep pressure off the dept. from the media and everything else that would come from the announcement for a time so they could work the case on the down low. Noting the lack of success in the previous tactic of media blitz. I think you're right though, they'd probably let it be known if they knew it was connected.

With her situation such as it was it might be difficult to get a conviction if they did find a match to some random DNA, a match to our guy would of course sweeten those chances if they could ever find him.

Does anyone have any information about the photo that Julie Green sent to Frank Mitch Gilbert, where she is pictured with another woman (Julie has her tongue out), and a note saying 'find her, she can help'?

I don't but I sure will look into it.

Greetings, I am active on another thread here on WS ( Dr Teresa Sievers case) and was just stopping by.

He is taking their shoes off, because he takes the victims somewhere prior to where they end up being! The shoe tread would be a give-away of the kind of location he is taking them to, like the beach, construction, marina/commercial fishing whatever.

He leaves the socks on, because there is no need to take them off. Less contact, less trace.

Just my thoughts of course.

but are the shoes found near the bodies? or are they absent the crime scene?

I don't think there is any mention of cloths nearby or anything of theirs found. They are listed as nude or partially nude which is probably because the socks are left on. I think taking the shoes off of them, keeps them from defending themselves by not being able to kick him. Or he likes to just take the shoes and cloths, but I think it is so they can't hurt him and they can't run either, well very far without shoes. He must ditch the cloths and shoes, purse or wallets, or any thing personal where he can feel safe they won't be found. He wants the women found, but not any DNA that would be on the cloths. Just my thoughts.

Another thing about shoes, you most likely have to take them off to get jeans off or tight pants. So maybe that is why they are not on them.

does anyone know how the girls were finding the johns? did they use social media or just out on the streets looking to hook up? I am assuming they had cell phones but we don't have that in MSM articles. If so, they would be most likely track phones.

Of the Volusia County victims, with the exception of Stacey Gage, I believe all were known to work the streets, particulary along the Ridgewood Avenue corridor. They lived pillar to post, frequenting the local bars and homeless centers, and in all likelihood, spending practically every penny they earned to feed their drug habits. Very sad, but true, according to everything I've read about their lives, and their deaths. So I'd be a little surprised if any of the victims from this particular group owned a cell phone.

Gunther, Green and Patton:
All three victims are believed to have met their killer on or near Ridgewood Avenue, a thoroughfare well known to local prostitutes and the “johns” that drive along the avenue looking for a date.

Kristin Dunn:
Dunn's most recent known address was the Happy Time Motel on Ridgewood Avenue in Holly Hill. Dunn, 47, had lived as a guest of a male friend off and on for several years, but she had not been seen at the motel for more than a year, said Rick Powell, the motel property manager.
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2004-09-21/news/0409210019_1_volusia-county-dunn-body

Investigators traced her movements the night before her death to a motel on South Atlantic Ave in Daytona Beach where she was seen leaving in a blue, 1993 Chevrolet Astro van driven by a male friend of the victim.

Faith Jenkins:
People familiar with Jenkins said she was a known prostitute who would frequent the area and have sex for money in the backyard.

Mamie Jameka Thomas (by the way, Thomas was found wearing only a skirt and her tennis shoes):
Daytona Beach police and neighbors of the area where the body was found said they've seen an increase in petty crimes like car break-ins recently. Police said prostitutes also frequent the streets nearby.

Maxwell's victims, Pamela Sue Will, Chastity Starr, and Cathryn Ann Carnes:
Will’s last known location was Sept. 8, 2010, at the Red Carpet Inn, 1855 S. Ridgewood Ave. in South Daytona. Police there said Will was asked to leave the motel for lack of payment.

He recalled that the young woman
[Starr] — who worked as a prostitute along the Ridgewood Avenue corridor — always waved and “hollered” at relatives if she saw them drive by to check on her.

In the 1988 stabbing, Maxwell told police that he had picked up prostitute Cathryn Ann Carnes on South Ridgewood Avenue in Daytona Beach.

I just read this Newsweek article again, Skully, and found something I didn't recall from a previous read. I don't think I've seen the internet mentioned anywhere else, though Chitwood is quoted in other articles as saying he believed Gage had plans to meet someone that night.

Newsweek
January 10, 2008

But with Gage's murder, the investigation took on new urgency. Police got what they hope will be an important break in the case Wednesday when the van Gage was driving was found in the lot of an apartment complex popular with young single people and college students. It had been there, according to residents, for about a month, or roughly since Gage had driven off to buy a bag of ice. Or so Gage told her grandmother, Betty Hill; Chitwood believes she was on her way to an assignation she had arranged over the Internet. Hill knows her granddaughter had a long-standing cocaine addiction and several minor arrests, but she insists Gage was turning her life around, and she doesn't believe she was a prostitute.

Speaking of socks, a Jane Doe found February 7, 2007, in Sarasota County. Here's the description of her clothing from Namus. Two pairs of socks, no shoes. Note, she was wearing a skirt. No need to remove shoes.

Clothing:
A multicolored cotton pullover shirt with an Italian label, a light colored "Spice Wear" skirt with a leather string belt, dark colored thong-style underpants, and two pairs of socks (one pair was white & the other pair was blue-green in color).

More details for Namus UP #1017:
  • Remains found in a wooded area between Ashton Ct. and Sarah Ave.
  • Long reddish brown hair that was pulled back into a pony-tail.
  • The victim had saline breast implants, Mentor Smooth Round Moderate Style 1600, manufactured in 1998.
  • A skeletal analysis completed on the remains indicated that she may have fractured her nose and right wrist at some point in her life.

You know, this strikes a chord with something I read this morning about LE finding the body of a pregnant Daytona Beach (Volusia County) missing person (Shaquierra Pinckney) in a cemetery in Putnam County:

Pinckney drove away from her residence on Berkshire Road on Aug. 30 and her body was found Sept. 3 by three gravediggers in a remote cemetery off Federal Point Road in East Palatka, police said.

One of the men who found her said Pinckney's nude body was partially burned

http://www.news-journalonline.com/a...g-for-stolen-car-of-slain-Daytona-Beach-woman

The article mentions she had advertised herself on a website in the escort section with the name "Poison" - with the (now) sad and ironic statement that she had "0 tolerance for violence". :(

Hi guys - just making sure everyone saw this info (sorry Bessie if this is not posted in the right place - you had to move my last post, so I followed that one to here and hope it's correct this time LOL):

The man arrested in the rape and torture of a homeless, pregnant woman is also a person of interest in the unsolved death of another woman, an official said Tuesday.

John Lytus is sitting in the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bail allowed because Daytona Beach police said he raped, hogtied and tortured a homeless, pregnant woman ill from drug withdrawals the night of Sept. 18. According to reports, Lytus stabbed the woman in the breasts and left her tied up nude for 12 hours.

He had picked her up at the 7-Eleven at 955 S. Ridgewood Ave. at 7 p.m. and did not release her until the following afternoon at 1:15 p.m., police said. The victim told investigators that Lytus was driving a blue Toyota Tundra or Tacoma pickup, police said.

Sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant confirmed on Tuesday that investigators consider Lytus a person of interest in the suspicious death of 30-year-old Laura Nagengast. The mother of six — Nagengast had a baby four weeks before she was found dead, according to her mother-in-law — was found at 2400 Central Parkway near DeLand on Sept. 23.

and

A day before Laura Nagengast's body was found, police said a second woman came forward who had information about a "white man in a blue truck." The woman, described in the report as "a local prostitute," told police the man took her to a group of apartments and that there was a recreational vehicle parked on the street. They went inside and the woman told police the man forced her to put her hands behind her back at knifepoint and he secured them with duct tape. The man then forced the woman into oral sex, police said.

The pregnant woman police say was raped and tortured by Lytus on Sept. 18 also said her assault occurred inside an RV parked in front of a group of apartments at 554 Baldwin Lane. Lytus told both the pregnant woman and the prostitute that he was fixing up the apartments.

and

As a result, detectives obtained a search warrant for the RV and the blue Toyota truck identified by the second woman.

Inside the RV, detectives found a bloodstained blue blanket, a roll of duct tape, several strands of hair from both the Toyota truck and the RV, several black zip ties, kitchen knives, and another knife with a brown handle, police said

You posted in the right place, Unsolved. I was just coming here to post about Laura Nagengast, myself. Here's another bit of news. Chief Chitwood has stated that the three prostitute murders this year -- Faith Jenkins, Shaquierra Pinckney and Laura Nagengast -- are not related to the four serial murders from previous years.

Daytona Beach police chief: 3 women's deaths not serial killings
Police chief: Women's homicides are not connected

Faith Jenkins, Shaquierra Pinckney and Laura Nagengast were all found dead this year under suspicious circumstances. Like the four women who preceded them in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Jenkins and Nagengast were prostitutes, police and family members said. Pinckney advertised herself under the escorts section of a website.

But that's where all similarities end, Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said.

[...]
"They are not connected," Chitwood said regarding this year's deaths. "The only commonality between them was that all three lived a high-risk lifestyle."

All three women also lived in Daytona Beach at one time or another.
LE has not released the cause of death in any of the three recent homicides. Of Faith Jenkins, it's been stated that she suffered internal injuries that could only have been inflicted by a human being. Nagengast's parents told reporters that her body was "battered.

No suspects have been named in the Jenkins and Pinckney murders. As already stated, John Lytus, the creep who raped and stabbed a pregnant woman, is a POI in the murder of Laura Nagengast.

Hello everyone,

One thing we've been looking for are any photographs of the victims (besides Stacey Gage) that are not mug shots. We have a non-mug shot of Stacey, but the rest of the women seem to only have one photo each that has been published throughout the case.

If you do find something, or remember seeing a photo and can provide us a link, we'd really appreciate your help.

Take care,

Rachel and Josh

Sounds like more than one active offender

Of the unsolved murders, the only victims known to be connected to a common killer are Gunther, Green, Patton, and Gage. As for the others, I agree that the possibilities are wide open.

Regarding the most recent murders in 2015:

"They are not connected," Chitwood said regarding this year's deaths. "The only commonality between them was that all three lived a high-risk lifestyle."

"All three women also lived in Daytona Beach at one time or another."
