IMO definitely 2 , possibly as many as 4 now Im reading it Due to the likelihood at least some of these were the work of long haul drivers these crimes could span other states, and thousands of miles . Where you may have 1 body in Fla, you may have another (even dozens) in other states, however to FDLE, it may simply appear as an unsolved homicide. Especially if the victim is unknown to law enforcement (Ex a prostitute who has never been arrested), moved from out of the area, isnt reported as missing anywhere etc.. If the FBI is involved already, then it has already been taken into consideration, victimology, linkage analysis, and a profiles have most likely been generated One investigative consideration, would be to interview prostitutes who work (or used to work) area truck stops, and see if any of them had violent or potentially violent interactions with customers. It's a long shot, and it's often a LONG and tedious task as all of them have at least 4 or 5 "bad dates" , and when I say bad, I'm not friggin kidding , some of them are like something out of Silence of the Lambs. Many areas have created what's known as a "Bad Date Sheet" , where prostitutes and call girls will share information about these dangerous encounters, giving all the info they can. This can be a valuable investigative tool if the investigating agency can identify patterns. As we all know MANY MANY cases have been solved by someone coming forward with what they may feel is the smallest bit of what they feel was insignificant information You will usually find someone who has encountered dangerous individuals , escaped through some means, there's often "one who got away", but there's no guarantee. Remember serial killers develop over time, in their early crimes (or attempts) is where we are most likely to find a survivor, and as they grow older they get better at the acts, but tend to get sloppy in other aspects , providing us with another chance to uncover who they are . Even if it's not THIS serial killer , they may aid LE in taking a potential killer off the streets . They don't come forward because they either feel it's "just another bad date" or they are afraid of either law enforcement , their pimp, or the offender, they don't know anything about other dead females, or in a few cases they are too far gone on drugs to actually care anymore .
