March 13, 2023 article - Solo pilot, searchers indicate this remains a ‘search and rescue’ mission. Possible foot search starting Monday.

TACOMA, WASH. - A search is underway to find a missing pilot near Lake Quinalt and Queets.

[…]

His flight recorded on Flight Radar 24, it shows Collen's 2006 Cessna T182 Turbo Skylane taking off from Tacoma Narrows Airport at 5:35 p.m. flying over Fox Island, but his signal dropped seven minutes into the flight over the Key Peninsula.

… Washington Department of Transportation's Search and Rescue Coordinator Thomas Peterson says they worked with the Air Force Radar Forensic Team to look for signals and used military radars which indicated the plane flew for 36 more minutes after its signal dropped.

[…]

Peterson said, "smaller planes we fly, have a magneto ignition system, so you can lose all electrical power and the engine will continue to run. His [Collen] aircraft was a modern one with a glass cockpit or digital displays, and they require a lot of power. If there's a problem with the power system, like the alternator, you could lose all that. So it's not unheard of that people would have problems where their radio equipment failed or they're in-flight, and they were able to continue to a destination."

Search and rescue teams are now looking for the 15-year pilot over a 36 square mile area in the rugged forest land near Queets.
However, Peterson says rain, turbulence and snow are hindering their efforts.

[…]

Peterson says radar data paired with altitude information indicates there was a rapid "nose dive like" descent.

[…]

Search and Rescue are urging anyone who thinks they saw or heard a plane in the area are asked to call the State Emergency Operations Center at 1-800-258-5990.

Rod's FB (last post October 2022). He did post some beautiful scenery from a plane:

I don't know what to think of this comment (BBM):

"Tacoma Police" received a missing person report from Collen’s wife at 6:31 p.m. Monday, said spokeswoman Wendy Haddow. She said her husband had not been seen since 6:12 that morning and had been behaving unusually. Police contacted the airport, where Collen keeps the plane. His car was there, but the plane wasn’t."

Peterson says "his signal dropped. I'm thinking that could be the transponder, which sends out a signal based on a code that is manually entered (1200 if you are flying in fair weather and an assigned code if you are on an instrument flight plan which it doesn't sound like he was). Sure, that might fail if there's an electrical problem but a pilot can also just turn it OFF and keep flying.

I was able to find his daughters FB page through a search of his name. She and Rod's fiance (not wife as reported by the news) have much the same info as reported regarding the flight but the daughter does have some information as to what he left behind in the way of day to day personal effects, before he took off. Pilot's certificates are available to the public at www.faa.gov (you can request your medical information and your address not be made a matter of public record but the licenses held are always there). He was qualified to fly on instruments ( "in the clouds") but looking at the radar the weather that evening looked OK.
