Deceased/Not Found WA - Shantina Smiley, 29, & Azriel Carver, 8 (fnd deceased), Olympia, Mar 2010 - #8

Picture to the boot at the link.

Probably nothing, but she was my first thought when I saw the thread.
Another poster had the same thought as well,

Ummm, did anybody else catch the last line? "half a dozen other feet have washed up on beaches from Canada into the Puget Sound in the last four years." WTH? And those are only the ones that are found I suspect. Is this the mark of a serial killer? I live along the coast and we don't have feet washing up nearly that regularly!

Unfortunately for this case, at 5'9" I seriously doubt she would fit into a boys size 6 shoe. Wonder what MP cases this would fit into though?

It's coming up on the one year mark since Shantina went missing and this tragedy occured- I wonder if we will ever find out what happened. It must be so hard for her family and loved ones not knowing.

This was posted in the UID forum (WA WA - Human Bones - Point Defiance Park, Tacoma WA - Feb 2011 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community), but thought I'd bring it here. Based on the location of the bones alone, it could very easily be Shantina. VERY close to where Azriel's body washed up. But I'm not sure about the sleeping bag the bones were found intertwined in... Also, they only found 2 bones, so it may be difficult to make an ID.

Human bones turn up at Point Defiance Park

Police believe a pair of bones that turned up at a beach at Point Defiance Park last month are human.

[snip]

After waiting out high tide, detectives were finally able thoroughly examine the beach today, but they only found a hooded sweatshirt that may or may not be related the bones.

Tacoma police search park beach for more human bones

[snip]

They were tangled in a shredded sleeping bag that was still there today, he said in a telephone interview from the beach.

This could be her. Anything is possible. I pray it's her. I for one, would like to know if she's still alive. I never got the feeling she would purposley hurt her son and her walk off into the night. I felt so bad for her state of mind, if that makes sense.

Thanks for remembering the anniversary shewhomustnotbenamed.

Shantina was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, but would that still be intact when the sleeping bag is in shreds? Nobody ever mentioned Shantina having a sleeping bag with her. It would be a good explanation for why she couldn't get out of the car when the water came up though. I hope they can still identify the bones.

ETA: The guy who found the bones also mentions an unopened bottle of whiskey. This IMO doesn't really point to Shantina since she was drinking wine.

Yeah...everything else was in shreds. It seems like the sweatshirt would be newer to that location. And we hadn't heard about a possible sleeping bag before. But I guess it's possible. Also, we know she had purchased wine. But it's also possible that she had other alcohol in the van. Of course, that could also be new to the location. I just don't think there's enough to tell either way.

Editing, ok, clearly my sunburn is affecting my brain. I totally was not thinking, so nevermind my comment.....

Actually, I think the chances are low... I plotted it on a map and I don't see how a body could have gotten all the way out of Puget Sound into the Pacific. On the map below, A is where the vehicle was, B is where Azriel was found, and C is where the recent remains were found (please ignore the driving route...):

The Medical Examiner’s Office said the bones held no “forensic significance” and had been sent to the state archeology center.

That makes you think they aren't Shantina's, or any other missing person's remains authorities are looking for. Maybe they are very old bones that happened to get entangled with the sleeping bag.

I am still thinking that these bones are Shantina. Hopefully some answers will come soon from the state archeology center.

I do really doubt the bones would be sent to an archaeology center if authorities had any belief they could be Shantina's, or any contemporary missing person's. By definition archaeology deals with the not so recent past. The bones could be many decades or many centuries old, perhaps even prehistoric native american bones.

Not Shantina, this guy just went 300 miles to wash up there.

The body of a California man swept out to sea by a surge from the Japan tsunami last month has washed up on the Oregon coast, some 300 miles from where the incident occurred, authorities said on Tuesday.

http://www.kgw.com/news/Body-of-man...ave-washes-ashore-near-Astoria-119697299.html

A body that washed ashore near the south jetty in Fort Stevens State Park on April 2 has been identified as the man swept out to sea a month ago by a tsunami wave in California that was generated in Japan.

"He was a great kid," the father said. "My son flirted with death a couple times and got around it. This time he didn't see it coming. There was a sneaker wave that came down the shoreline. Some friends of his were down there taking pictures. I think he was expecting the wave to come out of the ocean, but it didn't. It came down the shoreline."

"He was not looking in the direction it was coming from, but they saw it coming," his mother said. "They tried to run down there and save him. One of the guys almost had him by the shirt. They couldn't save him.

"They tried to yell for him, but the ocean was too loud."

Remains found near Ft. Clatsop, Oregon....

I know this is south of where they went in... and Azriel was found 18 miles north. But it isn't very far away...

There is a comment on fb from Shantina's dad's wife (CK) that is interesting. She basically says they still think there is hope she is out there and that the media left a lot out.

The comment from LRW below that is also interesting. She says she wonders if there was a person of interest and that something weird happened on FB once a particular person found out her relationship to Az.

On FB, her g'ma also said there is a possibility that a foot that was found at Widbey Island might be hers and was sent off for testing.

ETA: I am back reading and see that it was determined the foot was not hers.
