A white U.S. soldier who friends say was celebrating his pending departure from the Army was fatally stabbed by at least one black assailant over the weekend in a racially charged confrontation, police in Washington state said.

Spc. Tevin A. Geike, 20, of Summerville, South Carolina, died after being stabbed early Saturday in Lakewood, not far from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he was based, according to base officials.

Police are trying to determine who killed Geike, who they said was walking with two other soldiers in Lakewood after 2 a.m. Saturday when someone in a passing car yelled a comment about the three being white.

Spc. Tevin Geike murder: Suspects due in court


A key piece of evidence was found Monday when searchers located the knife in a wooded area of Tillicum, about 3 miles from Lakewood where the soldier was killed. Both communities are near Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Three soldiers arrested for investigation of murder where scheduled to make their first court appearance Tuesday in Pierce County Superior Court.

Army Spc. Ajoni Runnion-Bareford, 22, of Islesboro, who was based at Fort Lewis, Washington, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma, Washington, to a charge of rendering criminal assistance in the first degree...

Runnion-Bareford was driving a car carrying four other soldiers who got into an argument with three men walking along a street around 2:40 a.m. after a night out in the nearby city of Lakewood... Hill told the others as he got in the car that he “cut” the victim, and they drove away. As they went south on Interstate 5, Runnion-Bareford took the knife from Hill and threw it into brush along the highway...

Hill, who joined the Army last year and is from Chicago, is charged with murder in the second degree and remains in custody on bail pending his scheduled trial Dec. 1. Another man who is charged with rendering assistance in connection with the murder, Cadarium Johnson of Texas, was freed after his arrest and is also scheduled to stand trial Dec. 1.

Private Jeremiah DeShaun Hill, 24, an infantryman assigned to 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division was formally charged with premeditated murder, murder and manslaughter in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice...

An agreement was made between the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office and the 7th ID earlier this month to transfer the case from civilian to military jurisdiction. All case files and physical evidence have been handed over as part of this agreement and will be included in the military’s processing of this case.

Hill was physically transferred from the Pierce County Jail to the Joint Base Lewis-McChord regional confinement facility on Dec. 19 and remains there pending trial.

One accomplice, Spc. Ajoni Runion Bareford, in August pleaded guilty to providing criminal assistance to Hill. He has since been released from jail and is awaiting a discharge from the Army at JBLM, said 7th Infantry Division spokesman Lt. Col. William Coppernoll.

Pierce County also has transferred its prosecution of the other alleged accomplice, Pfc. Cedarium Johnson, to the Army. Johnson is serving in the 7th Infantry Division, and the Army has not filed new criminal charges against him...

Moving Hill’s case to the Army’s control could help Geike’s family make use of victims’ resources for military families, said John Sheeran, a deputy prosecutor with Pierce County. That could include providing reimbursement for travel expenses. Geike’s relatives mostly live in Kansas and South Carolina.
